Hi

Picked up my sv650s k5 today , as I have already heard the forks are quite soft , does increasing the fork preload make much differece ? ( I'm 15 stone btw) or need new springs / heavier oil ?

Likewise what are you guys using as rear preload ?

Never owned a Suzuki before , the finish looks a bit so so ( for winter use ) then again most bikes are the same .

Have given a swill down with cold water & applied F365 & Vasalined fork lowers & put grease on bolts etc .

Any other tips to keep it in fair condition , as use bike every day it will never be mint !

Does a fender extender stop much crap going over the exhaust ?

Also how do the brakes cope with Winter , is it the normal clean piston every couple of months ?

Cheers

Hi Steve,
forks, well the preload isn't going to make a whole lot of difference, you'd do much better with new spring & oil, work out the sag you need and make the spacers accordingly.

rear preload, you're going to need most of it to make much difference, after a time you might want to think about a replacement, although the original is, if not great, OK.

It's well know the finish on the SV is a little "budget", get something on the tank sides (second skin) and cover the front of the fork bottoms, the cadmium bolts will have very limited weather protection, so you could go round changing them to stainless if you wanted.

I acrylic polish the bodywork before winter and again at the end, as this tends to keep most of the crud off (or just requiring a hose down), lots of water after salt has been down.

run bike after washing, when it has some heat, liberal spray of wd40 on engine, the bike should be enveloped in a cloud of the stuff, wipe down instuments and controls after.

the brakes, well I'd plan to strip them twice a year, once at the start of winter, making sure they are free moving and well greased (retaining pins), and a second time for the summer, see what the winter has done, good clean, check they're upto the session to come, c lean water (hose, not power washer) inbetween should be all you need.

A fender extender is a sound investment, I'd fit one.

Cheers Mark.

Are these various makes of fender extender , if so which one should I go for ?

Are there any discounts available from any suppliers ? How much are they ?

What suppliers have people used ( mail order) ?

How easy are fender extenders to fit ? , do you have to drill anything ?

Also thinking of fitting a road legal can with removal baffle .

Don't really want to spend a lot maybe 150 quid max

Any recommendations ?

Cheers Steve

I HIGHLY recommend ACF-50 spray rather than the F365. The F365 stuff washes off in the bad weather and stinks when the engine's hot !!

The ACF-50 spray is designed for use by the aviation industry so it's pretty good stuff, it doesn't wash off so you can apply it just once a year. It's been on my bike for a few months now and there's no corrosion anywhere !!

I got mine on Ebay for about £13 delivered, it's a big can and sorted my bike AND three mates bikes and there's still loads left. Bargain !!!!!

Yup, I've used both- FS365's good but ACF50's great. More expensive, but it goes a lot further.
