Hi all,
Advice needed please,I changed my rear pads today and noticed that in the bikes manual there is a diagaram that shows that there should be a pad shim & pad insulator, when removing the pads I noticed that neither were there. The pads I used to replace the worn ones where the same ebc double h pads.
Is it just a case off the 2 x missing parts not being needed for these pads ? I also removed and cleaned the front pads and there wasn't anything between the pads and the brake pistons there aswell.

I've been out on the bike and the brakes are working fine but just thought I'd check :?

The pads have been changed a few times now by garages and seeing that this is the first time I've done them  I just wanted to know if this is the norm with these pads ?

Cheers,

Hi pepe,
in most cases these shims are lost as they stay attached to the original pads when they are removed (you have to prise them off) it doesn't make a great deal of difference, although you may suffer a little brake noise, just smear a little copaslip on the back of the pads.

Cheers Mark.

The shims I understand about, but what are those little spring clip things that are a bu**er to fit back. I gave up trying to refit those

They are the easy bits. They stop pad rattle, and are quite important as they keep the pads from moving around on the pins.

As for putting them back, the process is easy. Slide one pin in, locate spring clip under that pin, push second pin to just infront of the pad, press spring clip down and push in the pin, same as it comes out the other side.

Hmmm, must be doing something wrong then. I'll give it a go next time pads are out.

Thanks for that Viney :)

Cheers Mark,
the brakes aren't making any noise and I did smear some copper slip along the backs off them and they are working ok. I just wanted to check, thanks for replying and putting my mind at rest.

The pad shims don't cover the entire back of the pad where it contacts the piston, (the leading edge is missing), this is intended to even up pad wear, you may notice that the pads often wear to a tapered shape without them.

This is the reason the leading edge pistons of many multiple piston calipers are smaller than the others - to lessen the uneven wear caused by the self servo action of the pad leading edge.
