View Full Version : Ticking noise......
Hi guys,
Just bought a SV650 and it's awesome.....except.....when it's running cold it sounds fine, but when the engine starts to get warmer after around 10 minutes' riding, I get this ticking noise from the engine. Is this normal? :?
Paul
Could be tensioners...
I had mine replaced cause they were making a noise.

I think this is fairly common, depending on severity. How many miles has it done and did it have a FSH?
It has 20000 on the clock and came with full receipts of service. The last srvice was done about 300 miles ago.

If it's not cam chain tensioners, I'll eat my cam chain tensioners :)
Cheers for the info guys! If it's the camchain tensioners then is it a big job to get them.....erm.....tensioned? :-s

They don't always need replacing as sometimes they become"sticky" but free themselves off after a little while If the ticking persists after a couple of days riding[2-3hundred miles] get it looked at

Ages back, I told an SV Rider that the noise was the cam chain tensioners... Though I embellished it a little, and told him it was the tensioners winding down. They're clockwork you know. So he should go and get the winding key from his toolkit. Can't find it? OK, luckily you can use the key off a tin of corned beef. Unscrew the top bolt, stick it in and give it a couple of hundred turns clockwise. Also gave him some abuse for being such an incompetent, did he not read the manual or use the search engine? it's been covered a hundred times you know.
Not one person corrected me... I didn't think anything of it till he PM'd me 2 days later asking if he was doing it right. Now I see the destruructive power of a lie. They're stronger than truth.

As I've said before, it's Death Watch Beetle.
Or your cam chain tensioners.
Or as Sid says, a bomb 8-[
Had the same problem.
I managed to undo it slightly (heard one click) then tightened it back up. It's not recommended but seemed to work a bit. Going to have another go next weekend (just one more click should do it)
Anyone tried this method (and yes I was very careful)

With the carbed model ones you can back them out with a side-armed #1 flathead screwdriver, then let them rest, it can help. It stopped working on mine after a wile, mind.

don't worry about making the noise go away, it's the distinctive noise that SV's make, just like dry clutches in a ducati, or gear whine in the gear driven cams of a VFR,
mine is still making the same noises at 123k that it did at 8k and 20k and 50k, and I have never done a thing to my tensioners

Nah, I don't entirely agree with that. A bit of rattle's fine, but a lot is indicative of a failing tensioner causing possible timing issues, premature wear o the cam chain and ancillaries, and ultimately risking a jumping chain and rearranged valves.
Though hes right in the main... Motorbikes make noise, and SVs can make a fair amount of rattles without it being a sign there's something wrong.
