Hi there,
I posted on SVRider about this way back when the ORG was down. I have just recently bought a set and have yet to fit them. Apparently (according to the latest RiDE mag) Oxford are looking to recall all HotGrips (NOT HotHands as far as I'm aware) purchased since September 2005. The fault apparently can cause the grips to "not work properly" and is not a safety issue. No heat, no fire at a guess.
I'll be giving them a phone to check if they need inspecting or exchanged. Will post of any useful info after I've called them.

Cheers for the info.
My Oxford H/grips stopped working intermittently last week (the coldest few days its been all winter!). Done the usual checks , could not find the problem, although I suspect its the switch. Worked bloody fine today. Booked into be properly inspected on friday. :(
Not a happy chappy, had to dig out some proper winter gloves. My hands might as well have been hooves! Bye-bye throttle control (very little in 1st place, on and off innit! ), and bye-bye feelin' the clutch. The horror......................
Andy(jerkyboy) :?
Balls. I've just ordered a set... they were reduced to £35. Maybe that's why?
Oh I really hope mine don't break...

Damn
my old ones used to intermittantly fail to work from time to time
I trashed the bike before getting them seen to however
I did buy some new ones this Jan, so I hope they don't suffer from the same thing

Jim, no need, since you always leave yours on for 3 hours when the bike is parked up, yours wont have enough current in it to bake a wee fairy cake, never mind start a fire  :D 8)

Called George White's in swindon and they said they weren't aware of this recall, said they had bought in over 200 and haven't heard a thing about, hope this is a good sign. :?

OK GUYS - AN UPDATE
Straight from the horses mouth (well the stable boy anyway).
I called Oxford today and if you have the carton for your RECENTLY purchased grips (not those from a year ago), look next to the barcode for a green spot. This will identify them as new stock which are fine. From what I gather, this only means that they have had additional quality checks by Oxford.
If there is no spot and they were bought recently, you should contact your dealer. I contacted J&S Accessories from whom I bought mine (£29.99 a set with a free hat!) 8) . The very helpful chap on the phone explained that they had inspected their entire stock and had returned the faulty ones to Oxford. The remainder were all passed as being fine.
I deemed fit to enquire as to the true nature of the fault and was told that on faulty sets, ONE GRIP ONLY had a flaw in the moulding of the rubber. On units affected, the heater elements (wires) could be viewed through the outer surface of the rubber where it was on the thin side. "CLUB" biscuit syndrome  To me, this is something that should have been picked up at the factory (I think it is in the far east) and I'm confident that Oxford will have put on the pressure to avoid a recurrence.
So there you have it, you know what to look for. The electronics etc are not affected and any faults of this nature should be pursued under the normal warranty procedure.
I can fit my grips now! (We'll eventually when I get the time)
Cheers,
Garry
this is for rab's(scooby2102)benefit- ive wired the grips into the lights so that i cant leave them on-again.with the key out there is no power to them so no more flat btry ,i.e stranded out in the middle of nowhere

I put a relay on the side light to enigize the main power circuit for the Hotgrips...
That way when the bike ignition is off the Hotgrips are also off.
Saves me from forgeting to turn em off...
and so some nastey young squaddie can't drain my battery down.

Okay, I* fitted mine today. I* wired them into my brake light very cleverly so that they won't work when the ignition isn't switched on. No risk of flat battery (unless I leave the parking lights on again).
I took a couple of short trips later today with them switched on, and they worked fine. I* am an electricicial appliance fitting genius. Fingers crossed my* handywork wasn't in vain...
* Sid Squid, but with some help and chocolate pastries from me

this could be whats wrong with mine, although i have the new type with the LED control panel, which i have bypassed so IMO its the grips. i fitted them 3 months ago, & throw away the box last week:smt087

the led control panel was manufactured ages after the 'window' the faulty ones were. So it shouldn't be that. I've had both the dial and led panel and it is just as hot btw. Send them back to oxford, i did with an email receipt, no box and they didn't complain (too much :P )

no box or recpit:( plus i glued them on good
Sorry Hovi5, you still after the grips? I haven't had chance to remove 'em yet & they're never plugged in, so I never use them.
I will get them off the bike fairly soon hopefully :)

Do I sense a recall there?
Well, what I'm thinking is that once they're off the bike (if I can find the old grips that is), they'll be no use to me.
Come pick 'em up or pay postage & that's that
Can't guarantee they'll come off this weekend though.
pick them up  from snowdonia
i will gladly pay the postage
if you are sure you dont want them?
no rush...........

as its almost spring how about b4 next winter?:smt043 :smt042 [-o<
I had problems with my grips. And oxford sent me a new controller and all is hunky dory :D
They were cutting out when had indicator and brakes on. Apparently this is a fault they were aware of on certain bikes. Can now even have my full beam on aswell if I want! They are fab ;)
i told him the grips are faulty but he now wants power readings & part numbers i did give up ....but im going to get it sorted now summer is comming
