Thinking of sourcing a stainless steel bolt and nut for the real axle 8) but is stainless steel weaker then the steel used in the axle already?

Don't use stainless for critical stressed items like wheel spindles.

Definately weaker, that's why there aren't stainless bits readily available for such areas, such as the:real axle
But if you'd like to use stainless on a fake axle, it'll be fine.

The tensile and sheer strength of high carbon stainless steel is higher than that of mild steel. The thing is that stainless is more brittle (in most cases) than mild steel. So the vibrations and jarring of the wheel on the axle could cause micro-fissures in the steel making it weaker.

So like everyone else said, I wouldn't use it for your axle.

Yoyodyne do titanium spindles for the SV rear and GSXR front 8) They do cost about £150 each, though. Probolts do titanium rear spindle nuts at about £7.

stainless steel is definitely not strong enough as it cannot be heat treated to increase tensile strength, only work hardened which does not make it strong enough. if you take a file to your axles you will find that it hardly makes an impression which shows how tough it is. i see in the demon tweeks catalogue that they sell st/st disc bolts which worries me for the same reason. you could buy a titanium bar from probolt and have a local engineering shop make one from your original. i have my spindles replated every year to keep them looking good it costs £20.00 for the pair

Having read the other responses I've voted 'no'.

I have a question here  WHY :?:

it's not like its the most visible part of the bike

regular cleaning and greasing is far easier

and as others have stated its not a good idea really

Replated with what?

I hate rusty parts, I've changed as many bolts and nuts as poss its just the rear axle and a few other parts that i want rid of for a non-rusting metal

I stupidly kurusted mine, now it rusts like it was made out of cast iron

Replated with what? i have them done in bright zinc plate and yellow passivated or zinc and yellow to use the vernacular. the yellow passivation is more sacrificial than clear passivation so it lasts longer. it also looks quite good as its more of a goldish hue than yellow. just luck for electroplaters locally. i get mine done as a foreigner for cash
