View Full Version : GSXR front end
ok i have done a search but through incompetance or anything else i cant find what i need to know.
What im asking is what front ends will fit the sv 650 withough moddification?
If modification is needed how much modification?
How much roughly should it cost me?
Is there anything else i should know?
im expecting good ol northwind to know, but anyone else is welcome to contribute too 8)
thanks in advance
Andy

21Quest more or less told me how to do it :)
Both northwind and 21QUEST told me how to do it
thankyou for that, suppose i should have said its for a curvey...the harder one to do
will try to read, then re read and make sense of all that tomorrow me thinks
the main thing that concerns me is the steering lock issues and the issues with bearings and stems...are they worse or less bad (english is awful) than they sound?
oh and speedo set up

I'd say simpler than you'd think, unless you make it complicated :) If you get yourself a SRAD front end, it'll go on fairly easily. I'd say replacing the head bearings with the TWF ones is the simplest way- or at least, you can do it all yourself, but swapping stems really needs a press to do right I think. I made it complicated, of course
Steering lock should be fine with SRAD 750 parts. The ignition lock may need work- mine needed about a mm taken off either the lock stud or frame.
Speedo... 2 options there. There's a kit now available which makes it easy, it's about £40 for a magnet and pickup deal. Not got mine yet but SVRash used it, seems good. Or you could buy my rear wheel conversion parts off me for £20, once I change to the pickup kit (only changing because I'm changing wheels, it works perfectly well!)
It's not exactly easy... But it's not horrendously hard either.

Been really enjoying the front end posting recently and following a recent MOT been considering it myself. MOT said that the front brakes were fading so likely that the discs are warped and they recommended replacement if I am planning of keeping the bike. My forks are a right state, pitted and the laquer has bloomed, but that is winter riding for you. Oh and lack of cleaning
So my options are to spend £300 on new discs + whatever time to strip, polish and relaquer the forks or replace the front end say £100. :(
A new front end sounds much more exciting project and I am thinking that selling the SV parts should make it more or less the same cost and new discs and polished forks. :P
Reading the posts looks like northwinds setup looks like the one for me will start looking for the parts over the summer.
With all the parts can this be done in a day?
As an aside I was talking to my local shop who have used R6 forks on a curvy SV is this worth looking into?
Cheers

Yup... I took 2 lazy afternoons but I was doing other work at the same time.
R6 forks? Complicated IIRC, you can do it with the standard wheel and discs but you need a custom axle. It used to be a little more popular (Motomorphic did a few) but mainly for the speedo drive, which isn't really an issue these days.
Sumimoto brakes are great... So that'd be good. But I don't think the R6 forks are as good as the GSXR 750 ones personally.

Took me 4 1/2 hours :P
lol, ive been very cheeky and pmed northwind some questions...
im hoping to take no more than two days doing this...although i prefer the make it up then fit it in approach as much as possible, (i.e. put brake fluid in before hand etc etc if possible) that way theres less chance of un thought of snags...even if its put it together inside (out of the cold) take it apart and re-put it together on the bike.
just thought of another question, what size tyre does the hayabusa etc front wheel take?

  i lost count of the number of PMs i sent him
My srad wheel takes a 17 but i rang the tyre shop and they said that my 16 would be fine

Yup... I reckon it's a good idea to use a 120/70-17 (standard fitment for the GSXRs etc, and what will be on the wheel if it comes with a tyre) since it raises the front end back a little towards the SV's standard. Can't be bothered to do the maths just now but I think it's 12mm difference in height.
BTW, that's 160 and 170, not 16 and 17 :) A 16'd fit on an old Fireblade but not a GSXR ;)
#-o thats what i ment, fitted my SV 120/60 to my SRAD wheel :-k
