Tried to start my new sv650 today to go to work ,

turned over but did not fire

Tried using a bit of throttle started however idled for a 10 seconds at 1k & then cut out !
Have checked all the obvious , kill switch , has petrol etc .

No warning lights etc showing .

Will need to arrange bike to be recovered back to garage by AA , however to say I'm pi##ed off is a under statement !

Any one got any ideas?

Cheers

Firstly, if it is new, ring up the dealers and get them to pick it up. They may send out a mechanic who'll be able to fix it on the spot.

Seems very odd though.

Can't imagine how frustrated you must be feeling.

Is there something you can do to the pointy SV's to put them into "Dealer Mode" IIRC the bike will then show an error code somewhere on the dash and then that will tell you whats wrong with it ?

I am sure somebody posted about this a while ago, do a search for it and see what turns up.

Failing that a 3 day old bike, I would be ringing the dealer and telling them to come back and collect it

Hope you get it sorted

got home from work still will not start , spoke to dealer who said that they will pick it up .

Got rid of my last bike as it kept breaking down , hopefully its just a teething problem with the SV !

Time for lots of beer tonight to sooth the pain !

Hopefully we get fixed back for the weekend ....

Had a similar prob, turned out to be the regulator/rectifier.

i had a brand new bandit in 1998 and the bloody thing broke down on me with only about 10miles on the clock!
dealer picked it up and said it was a loose coil lead, no probs after that!

Tell me about them. I know its a budget bike but the reg/reg is a **** take :!: :x

Sounds like his is turning over so i doubt its that. Could be a dodgy full pump. When you first turn the key can you hear a buzz and wurr as if its all stirring into life? Not when hitting the ignition just turning the key.

Hi,
I remember reading you previous posts. The one where you stated that you were picking it up the next day, and the one just after you had picked it up in the snow !!

How wet was it on the day of collection? In other words, just how much water did you get on the bike / electrics whilst riding home and have you ridden it since? and.......
Did you notice how many miles were on the clock when you collected it ? In other words was it test riden / PDI'd properly ?
I'm sure you will, but let us know what the poblem was - its gotta be something silly ?

its gotta be something silly

I once heard a story about a guy with an MGB V8 who, when he bought it from new, said it ran "lumpy" (well for a V8 anyway). Anyways, after a compression test they found 1 cylinder had no compression at all, so decided to take that head off, only to find that there was no piston or con rod connected to the crankshaft

Sorry, I digress.

Are you getting the "buzz" after turning the ignition on ?

As it's turning over do you get a "check" come up on the dash ?

Do either of the plugs actually spark ?

.

Hi
Bike getting picked up tomorrow ( wife does not work tomorrow) as my boss won't let take time off work (w##ker).

Picked bike up in snow on Saturday , used Mon and Tuesday ( All in torrential rain) , done about 240 miles .
Bike does buzz when turn ignition on , turns over however will not fire, no check displaying on dash ......
Its not kill switch & does have petrol in it , may be fuel pump f##ked?
Bike had 1 mile on the clock when I picked it up , so someone had taken out as part of PDI

Hope to get it sorted as difficult to get to work without , also got a bollocking when late getting to work because bike won't start !

I'll let u know what garage says.

Cheers Steve

That sounds a bit like a flat battery.Either not charging or shagged battery.Wonder if it sat in the showroom for a long time without a charge?

Amark I must have an exception to the rule then.

Mine has been an absolute dog this week in the rain :(

Mis-firing all over the place and cutting out at lights...very embarrassing

Should be getting a fender extender from daddy sperm soon so hopefully that will cure the problem :D

Lee i suppose it depends on the preperation your dealer did and the servicing you get.

never was a problem on my svs and it was ridden everyday rain hail or shine .

I did fit a fender extender and used some nifty silicone based grease on the front plug cap, but even before that i never had any issues it was more preventative than necessary (the thought of conking out in the middle of nowhere is not a option i like)

anyway the TDM just takes anything i can throw at it in its stride.

AA came out today

AA said
"Keeps cutting out when cold , engine idles ok when warm , possible choke / ECU fault refer to dealer "
Highways sending van out within the hour .
Lets see how the dealers handles this , as if not happy going straight to Suzuki GB , re sales not fit for purpose.

Will see how it goes , hopefilly Highways will do a good job , quickly !

With a ramp the guy should have been able to do it himself anyway.

Hope this isn't an indication of Highways abilities.

just got a call from Highways

Problem was that one of the plugs had gone down & was only running on 1 cyclinder

As I had used in terrential rain asked if it was a problem with plug getting damp , however told it was dry & just a duff plug.

I have since heard of another 2 plug fails on new SV 's maybe a duff batch of plugs?

They are dropping it back tomorrow

Hopefully this saga is over & I can enjoy my sv !

Take it easy

Got bike back today , dropped back by mechanic who showed me duff plug that he had taken out , ( he has replaced both btw) , seemed a nice bloke.

Asked if it was a problem with damp getting into front plug , but said no it was dry just a duff plug .

Spoke to Cust service bloke who appoligised asked him to supply & fit fender extender as a good will gesture which he has agreed to do when I get 600 mile service next weekend .

Hopefully thats it sorted

Cheers Steve

Err....just a little warning note: one plug "failing": possible. A whole batch....very, very unlikely (although not unheard of). The problem is that when some (stress, SOME) mechanics replace a spark plug, and the problem then goes, they report a "duff" spark plug. Unfortunately, they then rarely search out the cause of why the plug "failed" - or probably more accurately, fouled.

The MOST common causes of this are: engine run very slowly for extended periods (not uncommon during run-in); too much fuel (perhaps caused by use of choke and enthusiastic throttle pumping); insufficient available voltage to put a spark across the plug gap (sometimes a faulty ignition system, most commonly the plug shorted out by water around the leads, caps etc etc).

What this all means is that it MIGHT just hapen again if they haven't fixed the cause. You might consider, if you do a lot of short journies at rather slow speeds, a switch to Iridium plugs. They are more tolerant.

Mechanic showed me plug that had failed it was not fouled , if there is still a problem then I will be straight on the phone back to the dealer .
Bike is used daily for 50 mile run , not much town work therefore average normally 60 - 70 mph , bike not left to idle at startup

Will have to wait and see hopefully it was a duff plug , but hay who knows except the mechanic who seemed ok to me

Guess will see

Cheers Steve

yes ive had this where the mec firstly changes the plugs and if the prob seems to go away then he thinks its sorted. trouble is with me and my zzr the prob came back.
