You know what mate, I may take you up on that, if you don't mind a Fireblade out the front.... Long way to go fro a cup of tea, but I've done sillier things in the past.

Must confer with Mrs Jelster though, but it sounds like a good idea.

I think I'll need more than a couple of days to get ready.

Odd.. should be cosham Portsmouth... try po6 2up in mutlimap.

The first packet of biscuits should be opened about 11ish, so those traveling far should have plenty of time to get down. I can also supply direction to all the local 'places to see'... namely the sea...

Yes.

No. I won't. I can't cope with being in the presence of two Forum legends at the same time.

Parallel twins also don't seem to have made the list of welcomed vehicles.

Also, I have to work. Otherwise I'd have come - thanks Dan!

So cheers to e.d. (first arrival), Samurai, Baldyman, socommk23, MattSV, Scoobs (travelled furthest  ), Rictus and Sid. Though Rictus managed to take 3 hours to get there and travel 230+ miles!

We also had a few of our other mates there so hello to them to...

The next one will hopefully be in the warmer weather and might well be a BBQ, but I'm sure we'll keep you posted. So all those that missed it can come too...

“Tomorrow, what you doing?” I said,
”got to drop the Mrs. off at Victoria at half ten” replied Ian,
“So meet at my gaff after?” I enquired,
“She’s off skiing, so it’s in the van”,
Thoughts of a van trip into central London, not something I’d be to keen on, I’m thinking.

“Well why not strap them across her back, you could loose her between a lorry & bus on the way” the mental picture draws a brief smile, but no, that wouldn’t go down to well.
“I’ll give you a call when I’m back” came the reply.
“OK, we’ll said by 11:30 then or I’ll shoot off myself”.
The plan is set; Dan (sudoxe) asks what’s going on? I explain it’s a ride down to Portsmouth tomorrow. “If you want to come, my gaff 11:30”.

I remember the conversation of the previous evening in Soho. Check my phone no new
messages check my watch, 11:30, well one more fag and then off.

Looks like I’m on my jack, no worries, although I don’t mine riding with others, even thoughs as good or better require a degree of concentration to ride with, I’ll not have to bother with that now, game on.

Throw the tank bag on & roll the bike out, it’s clear and crisp, the roads look good as I make my way down through the outskirts of the smoke to the more interesting tarmac of the Surrey roads.

Top of the tank at the gas station in Bucklands, and I’m all set.

Being Saturday, not Sunday the road to Dorking mostly empty of bikes, the beast fairly fly’s down the A25 to the town, a couple of “concentration tests” (cars) are passed on the way, as a warm-up of things to come, the road is smooth and flowing, and I get to lean into a few of the corners, the bike feels solid & planted, sweet.

Roll into town, progressive mode off. Go passed the Harley dealership, the group of owner look over, I think “mine goes further than the dealership guys; you really should try it some time”. I smile, but behind my race visor, it’s just for me. Wiggle though a bit of shopping traffic and some of the cars pull over to let me between them, that’s nice.

Finally turn out of the town onto the A25, the traffic is nose to tail, but I visualize the three foot gap between the lanes, just reserved for me (well OK a couple of islands as well) and wined on some gas.
The beast sheds its weight like superman his street cloths from a phone box, and we’re off.
A nudge of the bars here, touch of the brake there, swooping in & out the traffic, until finally I’m free of the road train, nothing but empty blacktop in front of me.

The cone of focus narrows and extends, peripheral vision is drawn in and used for the up coming hazards, progressive mode back on, and I start to push. Speed builds oh so rapidly, me and machine swallowing bend after bend on the ribbon of black before me.

Spot the turn off for Shere, going way to fast, stamp down a couple of gears, could of just used the brakes, but the slid and squeal of the rear tyre, something I kind of like, the bike slides left then right under my butt cheeks, but the new front Diablo holds rock steady, choosing my moment, as the backend pushes to the right, I let it go, just on the point of no return I lay down some power, the triple heart doesn’t let me down, it bites, bit of pressure to the Left bar, and it’s the perfect line, pulling hard I enter the slip road.

Make my way through the village at a slow pace; after all I’m looking for an unnamed road the map says is on the left. Find it, about eight foot wide heading in the right direction, turn in.

The surface is kind of bumpy so a little more knee pressure and a little less bum weight retain the vibration to the bike and not me, sound.
No white lane markings and no cat’s eyes I wonder what this would be like at night. The gentle bends tighten up as the embankment climb until they are some six to eight feet high on either side, the view ahead is only thirty or forty feet, so I concentrate on that point in the road, the challenge is on, who will win, me or the road? Building the speed to the point of a reflex test, I attack the sharp bends, a car coming up head on, I see the drive and that moment of indecision where he doesn’t know what to do, no matter, I’ve already worked out I can get through, JUST, the throttle opens wide as quickly as the eyes of the on coming driver, this is going to be messy or perfect!

The Beast digs in, squatting at the back and raising it’s head a little, through the gap I charge, the bank flashes passed a couple of inches from the left bar end, as does the car mirror from the right, easy, hard on the brakes for the right hander and the encounter is passed, on to the next.

This goes on for miles, finally the embankment drops and the road widens out, the greater surrounding come back into focus as the pinpoint sharpness is relaxed, now that was good, I find a place and pull over, fag brake.

After taking five the adrenaline is back to normal, I mount and off I go, road after road, turn after turn, rain, sleet, even a little snow, then comes the sun, but alas not for long, soon returning to the grey of overcast that has predominated.

After what seems like forever, I turn onto some decent tarmac and give the bike its head, now going at a fair clip, the road starts to undulate I crest one rise to find it drops more rapidly than expected and both wheels leave the deck, the upslope approaches, will we make it down before then?
Hit the bottom hard, perhaps to hard, throw some more power at it, all the suspension is gone and the bike is solid to the ground, climb the hill, once again that lightness flows threw the bike, but it stays in contact, and we’re back and away.

Turn onto the A29, I know this road well, here the challenge is to hold a speed (of course it’s legal officer) and just take the hazards without backing off, me and the beast devour the road, smiles all round.

Turn on to the back roads once again and make my way down and over to the A27 after the brief speed run of the A29, in the zone again, everything sharp and focused, some nice roads around here, have to try this again, coming up to Peresfield, could use the A3 and cut down, but no, stick to the B roads just awhile longer.

Finally hit the A27 just outside Chichester, and I put the bike into that place the triple does so well, just bouncing between roaring big twin and screaming IL4, beautiful.

Junction 12, cut over from the fast lane and down to the round about, turn up the A397 Portsmouth road, sharp right says the map, down the road I want, looking for the house I need, pull over, give Dan a bell, this can’t be right, no bikes outside?

Seems I’m not and it’s the next one over, fag in gob, I trundle down to the right place, sorted.

Dan’s outside to meet me, and I pull onto the front and stop, I kill the beast, rest now you’ve done you job, bike and rider unwind. The offer of a brew is more than gratefully received.

One sweet ride!

The blat home was just that, as time was pressing, A3(M) at a determined speed with Ian, cut off at New Malden and bike on auto pilot to home.

Thanks to Dan and Jax, for the brew, chat and destination. It made a normal Saturday into a wicked ridding day. Nice to meet all the guys there (although briefly) and the Diabetic shortbread was a thoughtful touch. see you guys around for the summer!

Cheers Mark

Dan,

Sorry I didn't make it. The DIY had to be sorted in the end, plus my firewall died, so I've only just got my Internet connection back (so I couldn't get to your number...)

Hopefully I'll make it next time.
