Just opened my emails to discover one from BT Broadband saying that I have been choosen to receive (at no extra charge) 8MB broadband.

Not being fully into the whole IT / PC thing, I guess it will be an improvement in speed on what I have already got? whatever that is?

O.K. so everyone on here with BT got the same email, eh?
You know like the famous "you have been chosen to be placed in the Readers digest prize draw" just keep receiving crap for years and returning it back to us.

Anyway I'm taking it, just don't come looking any more money BT.
I am thinking of switching anyway, currently paying £17.99 a month, who do you rate for an ISP?

Oooooo.... I got an e-mail saying Ive now got 1Mb broadband.... I knew that 5 months ago! its taken them long enough to tell me!

BT have been busy upgrading their lines for a while, I think they've started switching all the people who had the 512K unlimited to as high as the line allows.. in my case, that is 1Mb.. standard should be 2Mb, and for those lucky enough to live within spitting distance of their exchange, that would be 8Mb.. but we all pay the same anyway.. so your getting 8Mb and paying the same as me, bu Im only getting 1Mb... and damn.. I wanted to download prawn quicker ;)

I think I only have the lowest i.e. 1GB download. Which for me is OK as I don't download anything.

They also said that how much of the 8MB I would get depends on the area I live in, but its bound to be an improvement on my existing set up.

Fark, that's expensive. I've got 2Mb from Newnet at £18/month with 25Gb limit. Their 8Mb business broadband is £24/month (if you pay annually, otherwise £25.44) with 50Gb limit. I'm considering upgrading to that. The service is very reliable and customer support good, so I'd recommend them.

BT are upgrading every 2Mb line to 8Mb apparently.

I know its staggeringly expensive - it used to be £40 / month for 512!
However, I've no complaints about the service, their launchcast radio is very good, I never get any spam, no port blocking and unrestricted newsgroup access.

As I can't get even get 512k ADSL as the string is too slack between the BT cans. I have to make do with 10Mb Cable. Strange they were quick enough to install an ISDN service for me years ago.

BTW the company pays so costs me nought

Cable is better IMO. No need to have a phone line or pay line rental. VOIP is the future!

I now pay £7.99 a month through vonage. Unlimited landline calls nationwide and cheaper for everything else. No line rental as i run it through NTL broadband.

I think BT will be forced soon to allow ADSL connections without telephone service.

When that happens i will happly move to VoIP.

My mate is waiting for that to happen as he doesnt want to have a landline just to have broadband - its money for nothing if you dont use it!

I use a voip service from voipuser (http://www.voipuser.org) All landline calls (national and international) are free. They make their money from the incomming connection charge. But to stop abuse they limit your call to 10 mins. Works fine for me but missus/daughters cannot get on with time limited phone calls

I can only get 1 Mb and then only on a good day. I spend more time with no phone/adsl line than enough. I live in a town as well not some little inbred village.
