Hi everyone, I've been riding my SV650s for 4months now and in that time it has broken down 8 times, here are the symptoms any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Usually it will run ok for 40miles then begin to lose power until the point where it cuts out. It then will not start up again until its been left for 12hours or so. The shop I bought the bike from found a kink in the hose but at low speed (30mph) the bike still loses power usually about 5mph then kick back in every so often.

The work done on the bike since I bought it is as follows. Hole in tank repaired, new carbs, hose unkinked, new spark plugs.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it?

Cheers
Pete

Curvy or pointy?. And how many miles.?

Sounds like a bit of a nail to be honest.

check the coils and ht leads!
if the wires or conections are questionable, when they heat up this can effect the working of the components and stop the electricery reaching the plugs!

Ok, so you brought this bike from a dealer 4 months ago, and you have been having trouble ever since? Has the dealer been involved in the fault diagnosis?

I might be wrong, but i think you have a good case for a refund. The shop has sold you an item that is fot for the purpose intended, statutory rights and all that.

As for the problem, try the coils, and the leads, then the CDi unit. Sounds like an ignition issue.

It's a 1999 model but has only done 13k

Almost certainly Leccy,
As pointed out, check Coils, HT Leads and CDI unit as I would be suspicious of all the above until proven good.

I had similar problems with mine - eventually the cause was found to be chaffed wiring loom under tank - common problem on SV's - do a search for full details.

I'm having similar problems with mine.

If it's the water drain pipe from the tank that was kinked you might need to drain fuel tank and carbs, this has helped mine no end

I have two ideas:-

1 – overheating?? – I have a curvy too, not having a temperature gauge sux!! Check your fluid levels. Might even be a naff pump? Or a stuck thermostat?

2 – (and this is the more likely) you have a blocked/partially blocked ‘breather’ in the fuel cap. Next time it cuts out, ‘crack’ the cap open and see if you hear a suck of air (i.e. if the breather is blocked then a vacuum will be formed as the fuel is used).
