Has anyone fitted a 180 section tyre to their curvy SV650?

I realise it may alter the handling etc, but is there any safety issues with fitting it to the rim?

Basically I have a 180 section rear tyre knocking around and want to fit it to my SV, so just checking to see if others have done so?

Well if by safety issues you mean has anyone died after not doing it quite right, Yeah....

I wouldn't bother, from all accounts just not worth it and screws up the handling

Certainly not from all accounts, though it's not something I have planned for the immediate future.

21Quest has done it and liked it, but he put a 180 section rim on rather than trying to squeeze a larger tyre onto the standard rim.
I certainly wouldn't risk a 180 on the standard rim.

By safety issues I mean “is it likely to pop off the rim, or break/damage the carcass putting a 180 tyre on a 160 rim!?”.

Whys it not ‘worth it’?

My rear is getting a bit low, I have an almost new 180 tyre and don’t want to fork out on a new 160 when I have that knocking about!!! To me if it will go on (and nobody comes up with a good reason not to) then I intend to pop it on as it will save me dosh :)

Presumably it will look cool with a fatboy rear tyre too! :) (note: this isn't my main reason for wanting to do this, just a nice side effect :) ).

Ah, I was wanting a 180 on the standard rim, I am doing this to use up an existing tyre, not as a permanent mod, so buying a new wheels isn't really in the plan! :)

will my pushbike tyre fit my sv , if I inflate it to 90 psi and only ride the bike in the rain i'm sure it will be OK.

If you would only do it with a 160 rim, then I personally would not risk it. As Ian said, there have been deaths which were directly attributed to doing this.

If you fit a tyre that is to large for the rim the tyre will take on a diferent shape(flatter) as the rim squashes the tyre rims together to a smaller width, this can put undue stresses on the side walls . Get the right tyre for your rim your life is worth more than the cost of a new set of skins.

I don't think Ian actually said/implied that (did he?!) … an incorrectly fitted tyre is a very different thing to a different tyre fitted?! … To be honest with you I have already got a 170 rear on there ('my bad'?!!? :D) … again using up an old partworn I had kicking about!! :)

That to date seems ok, just wondering if the next step again is perhaps a step too far?

As others have said don't put a 180 on a standard rim. IIRC some manufacturers actually list a 4.5 as a minimum rim width for their 170.

In saying that some folks even say the 160 on the SV 4.5 is pinched. Personally I don't go with that. If you want a 180 stick a 5.5 inch in.

Cheers

A lad who races in the British SuperStock Cup said i could have his old 180's after each race but I graciously declined. I'm happy with my road tyres and I think 180's would be a little unstable for road use. Great for chucking the bike into corners though.

Thanks for your replies/responses. I guess we could speculate all day here, but has anyone actually done it?! If someone has and it was ok, then I’d be happy to try, but if no one has successfully done it then I’ll err on the side of caution this time. But it seems a shame.

Practically nobody's done it on teh standard SV wheel, since very few people are that reckless or stupid. I'd be astonished if you could find a garage who would do it either.

But, all is not lost. Bandit 1200 and GSXR1100 wheels can be fitted into the SV without too much heartbreak, apparently- as modelled by the lovely 21Quest. If you don't mind waiting I'll be having a crack at it soon- well, once I get the Ohlins back into the bike, and a few other things tidied up. Hopefully this week.

That’s ok, I have been changing my own tyres for years!! :D

“reckless or stupid” seen crazier things that that done in my time!! ;)

I’d be interested in the results of the bandit etc wheel thing, but I was only doing this really to save a few quid and utilise some tyres I still had knocking around!!! :)

 Thank you. Not even sore my mum would say that with conviction  .

Oh don't forget to weigh the Bandit wheel  . Just curious

Cheers

I recall reading a post about 1 documented SV fatality due to a 180 tire fitted on a stock rim, bead lot it's seal and all air mid corner due to cornering stresses

about a year ago, don't recall what board, but I think SoCalSV riders

That is the sort of answer I was looking for (not that someone had had a fatal, but that someone had tried and the results of trying). The tyre coming off the rim was worst case and if someone has had this happen then I won’t be attempting it on a standard rim myself!!

Thanks for your response.

PS anyone want a 180 section Macadam … or supercorsa for that matter??!?! :D

I would do, but it's too heavy to lift ;) The sprocket carrier assembly with its OEM steel sprocket is phenomenally heavy, I've not weighted it but I'd say it's roughly twice as heavy as the SV one. The wheel's just big but the carrier wasn't designed with weight reduction in mind...

Usually going two sizes up doesn't work as you end up with the tyre a bit pinched.

Have a look on ebay, often good deals on part worn tyres. Also try your local tyre place. Got a part worn 010 from my local (rideintyres in reading; btw, top place) for £25 fitted to a loose wheel.

It'd been on a supermoto so the very left edge was a bit chewed up, but fine for general winter road use.

As I'm in minitwins this year and now have a road SV the plan is to swap race wheel to road bike after each race weekend. Lots of donut practice then :D.

Yea, am there.

Not sure what number, but hopefully the bike will be very orange.
I have requested 21, as that's what I was last year, but may not get it.

Not even sure if I'm in MRO or Bemsee rounds!

You particpating or spectating/helping others?
