Right, as the weathers getting warmer.. (yeah right!)
I was wondering who amongst you would like to do the Black Mountains again ?? the same route as last time, stop at Llandovery for grub... and if the weather is sunny and warm.. try and find a place to park the bikes!
Those of us who went last time, might get to see a Ducati out in the cold again! but with a lot more other bikes about!
Wont be able to tell if the ice cream van will be ontop of the mountain or not though... as it was a tad old last time we were there!
Was also up on that mountain on saturday.. on the bike.. and it was sleeting!
As for date.. not this month!
Most likely sometime in April
Will mull over a date, and post in advance....
this time, lets pray for no horse boxes on the twisties... and the sun not be low enough in the sky as to be a pain in the ass when going round a bend at 60!
possibly, we will see, im a busy bee at the moment though :(
Andy
Right, as the weathers getting warmer
I woke up to ******* snow on Sunday :x
(Anyway, sounds good)

I was in South Wales on Saturday, All I know is that I got off the M48 went towards Monmouth and took a left turn towards Usk?? Then I just kept taking A and B roads and ended up in Brecons?? Fantastic day

Very tempted as i've never been round that area before.
valleyboy
14-03-06, 08:45 PM
very nice roads.. can do them fast or slow... miles and miles of twisty bits.... then we have grub, then more twisty bits.. and up to the top of a mountain with excellent views of the Black Mountains and surrounding area.... twisty bits down hill.... could turn round and do them again... etc! not a good route to do if its going to rain, as the roads are challenging enough in the dry.. plus as we go up quite high at one point, we will be right in the clouds then!
not a long ride out by any means, but a few hours of fun.... can take in Baldymans favorite road then ;) though I have a feeling plod will start patrolling that road shortly... especialy when the weather brightens up...
as said, a weekend in April will do.. will try and give a minimum of a weeks advance warning... all weather dependant! 8)

let me know as soon as possible so i can bully someone from work into swapping shifts with me, how many miles we talking bout roughly

20-03-06, 08:01 PM
Well, as long as I get my new chain and sprockets on the bike this weekend, and the weather looks half good, as early in April as possible is the time frame.... I need to let off some steam by then, or none of you will be keeping up with me! (appart from Baldyman on THAT stretch of road!)
Hopefully no horse boxes and 4x4's on the roads this time.. 'tis a lovely stretch of road when nothing gets in your way  though the police do tend to hide behind trees on the straighter bits of road around there... but there are very few of those :P
lemmings999
20-03-06, 10:39 PM
how about sat april 1st
i'm off work that weekend by the looks of it
valleyboy
21-03-06, 07:06 PM
Hmm.. possible.... has to be good weather though.... the others that have been will verify, probably not the best place to be in bad weather on the top of one mountain!
The route itself is probably about 60ish miles... but thats not incluing any of you lots traveling distance.... good roads, and well worth the journey
Will have to get use to my bike again though, just had a sprocket/chain kit... and its toothed wrong... so its going to wheelie a lot more than usual!
Not that it doesnt have a problem with the front popping up as it is... damned thing has a habit of coming airborne when its carrying passengers as is!
Also have to put up with the speedo being wrong now.. do'h!

22-03-06, 06:11 PM
This mountain is higher up.... and if its windy, you will know about it! on \a good day, its a very nice place to stop.. very good view from up there, plus you get to see the odd few bikers scream round a corner.. as I dont quite think they know whats ahead of them!

bugger.. I can only provide as much notice as the BBC Weather website predicts (happ hazard guess) the weather!
lemmings999
23-03-06, 10:22 PM
how far in advance do the bbc website predict then?
i'm far to lazy to look for myself,
as i said , sat 1st or sun 2nd are best for me

5 days i think.... right, may as well provisionaly book it for the weekend of 1st/2nd..... whos likely to come along ?? warning, that if it is fecking raining.. chances are it'll be called off unless some of you still wish to go along!
I have plenty of waterproofs... but I WILL BE WEARING THEM if its raining!
i.e. get your own you lot!
This is ONLY if I can get my sprockets done at somepoint over this weekend or during the week.... shouldnt take me long to actualy do that... but knowing me, I will try and clean the engine up with the sprocket cover off!

various meeting points.. Magor services for those who arent local... and Tescos petrol garage Aberdare for those who are! Would have gone for Shell in Hirwaun, but they closed it..
weekend of 1st/2nd April.. whichever day is to be sunniest...
as said earlier, this is weather dependant... if they forecast rain for next weekend, will see what happens...
will probably be aranging same route a number of times.. its a good bimble when the sun shines
lemmings999
24-03-06, 10:25 PM
i dont know where either of those places are   :(
valleyboy
24-03-06, 10:40 PM
Aberdare is about 10 -15 miles North up off the A470 from Pontypridd... its the next valley over from Merthyr.... and Magor is on the M4... its for those who have no idea how to get anywhere to meet up.. so I can attempt to lose them on the way through the back ways to Aberdare ;)

i'll find you somehow
Dave try this link mate
http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp
In the from box type Pontypridd. In the to box type in Magor, don't worry about the via box
You can print out a map as well. I may be wrong but if the meeting point is at Magor, then I would think it would be at the services just off the m4.

You can't miss Magor services, just head towards the bridge on the M4 until you see the sign for Magor and the services are the first exit off the roundabout.
I'm hoping to make this rideout but SWMBO is in the process of looking for a new car and a new kitchen! As long as I get her word she won't spend any money when I'm out on bike I'll be there, otherwise i may have to 'supervise' her purchases!

25-03-06, 11:09 PM
if the meeting place is magor dont you have to go back up the a470 past the petrol station we stopped on on the dual first to get to the roads we'll be riding
valleyboy
26-03-06, 10:14 AM
Those who live up in the valleys may be better off going to Aberdare, as thats where I will bring everyone from Magor.... the Magor point is for those who live closer to there, I will then bring them up via Ystrad Mynach instead of the A470.. do a little back roads up from the M4 instead, as dual carriage way all the time can be boring!

26-03-06, 10:17 AM
First off, I need to know if people are going to Magor as well......

valleyboy
27-03-06, 04:22 PM
Magor's fine with me :) I like the run down to the M4 'the back way' instead of using the A470... its no problem with me to do that :)
So saturday the 8th you can do Rich ? anyone else ?? I dont mind doing multiple run of the route if need be :)

will arange times etc later in the week... as the sun doesnt go down 'till nearly 8pm now, that gives us a bit more time to play with..
meeting points,
Magor services for those not from around here, or if its closer to them....
Aberdare, Tescos petrol garage for those who are a tad closer about 60 minutes after whatever Magor meet up is....

Says on the top of the thread  (does now  )
If I'm going will meet you at Magor ... what time are people looking to meet up?
Anyone from Bristol want to meet in Bristol first? I do - don't know the way to Magor :?
Morrison's, maybe?
Anonymous
28-03-06, 11:02 AM
To be honest I'm trying to drop the morrisons meet for going to west wales as its out of the way for me and really we want to go over the new severn bridge. Its very simple, go over the new severn bridge via M4 or M49 if coming from the west or Bristol west, then Magor services are juction 23A, the very frst jusction after the new severn bridge. Its about 15 mins only from the start of the M49 which is the link road from the portway to the new bridge.

valleyboy
28-03-06, 05:09 PM
was hoping a tad earlier.. I want to leave Magor for 11am latest.. so meet at 10.30... leave ASAP then... Stretchie, if you are coming.. no getting caught at excesive speed this time ;)
will see if I can get a few of my mates up here to join us at Aberdare.... a few of them are fair weather riders... so cant guarantee much! One of them wont bring his 'Busa out unless the outside temperatures at least 25 C, and has been dry for a week  and one has a Ducati... so no need to say more! my CBR riding friend can be just as mad as me for riding in gale force winds.. so depends if he's back from Swansea... and he is the other one that knows the route... but he will leave all of you for dust on these roads..
valleyboy
28-03-06, 05:42 PM
Lemmings, I will text you if need be when we leave Magor... so you can make your way from Ponty to Aberdare....
To get to Aberdare from Ponty, you get onto the A470.. go up to Abercynon roundabout (big roundabout.. cant miss it!) 1st left towards Mountain Ash / Aberdare.. keep on going for a few miles.... just follow signs to Aberdare basicaly... eventualy you will come across a McDonalds near a roundabout, turn off there, and you should see Tescos very easily by then...
Be warned all... I sometimes run late.... will TRY and leave early for once!
Ohh, and if that bloody Subaru turns up again on the way to Ystrad Mynach..... this time I wont behave
tiggers1963
28-03-06, 07:14 PM
VB, are you still coming via ystrad way?. If you are let me know asap, cos I may be able to get Saturday off, if I can I'll pick you all up you in Kwiksave (between Nelson & the Abercynon roundabout)
valleyboy
28-03-06, 07:29 PM
Yes, I will be going through Nelson, via Ystrad Mynach, down through Caerphilly, towards Machen, into Bassaleg, and onto the M4... then to Magor :)
The Kwiksave next to the petrol station in Nelson.. along the A472?... thats the only Kwiksave I know in that area.... you wanna be picked up on the way down, or on teh way back towards Aberdare ? I will be doing both ways...
Ive just been out testing my bike  new sparks went in yesterday, and today was the first chance I got to 'open it up' since putting new rear sprocket on... ohh my... have to behave myself now.. 130 mph is a tad easier to get to than normal now.. and in this weather too
bugger, just checked.. weather forecast cant make up its mind
bugger it, Im going now!

Slight change of plans here IF possible......
Rich, do you know where Bassaleg high school is ???
not a big deal if you dont, its just that the M4 is going to bore me to tears.... so if people could meet up at Magor, and then mosey on down to Bassaleg.... ??? just an idea... if nobody knows where it is, I'll meet up at Magor with you....
or, as previously mentioned in another thread, that McDonalds... cant remember which Junction.... around Newport area somewhere, next to M4 ??

VB, if you don't Fancy doing the Magor run to meet people. I don't mind going. I've managed to get Saturday off and it would be easier for me to go as I'm closer to the M4 than you. If that's ok with people let me know. Maybe we can then arrange a meet at Halfords in Pont (as we did on the aberystwyth run) on the return. Alternatively I can return via Caerphilly/Ystrad if you wanna meet somewhere else, if that's Ok with everyone. :)
valleyboy
29-03-06, 04:43 PM
I'll go down to Magor, I'll bring everyone via Ystrad then, as its a faaar better ride than being on the M4 and A470 on dual carriage way for 35+ miles.... its exactly the same distance anyway for me either way I go....
RIGHT,
PRIMARY MEETING POINT AT MAGOR for 10.30am... to leave at 10.45am meet in the car park, Dr Rich and Stretchie should know where...
SECONDARY PICK UP POINT is Aberdare Tescos petrol station.. & 11.30 ish... or whenever I get there...
or Tescos car park near the petrol station if its busy... we need to fill up here anyway... those coming from Ponty way, go up to Abercynon roundabout, take 1st left, signposted Mountain Ash / Aberdare keep on this road for a few miles, you will eventualy come to a roundabout, take 1st left.... this brings you towards Asda, on this roundabout take 2nd exit (which is at about2 o'clock if you want to be that way.. ) keep on this road until you get to another roundabout, take 3rd exit (again, about 2 o'clock) on this road for a short distance, then another roundabout, straight on, then on for a bit, and ANOTHER roundabout turn left.. you should be able to see Tescos petrol station by now.. and a McDonalds.. and should be able to find your way in...
Ohh, by the way.. did I mention Aberdare has a shed load of roundabouts?!?
Now... ANY QUESTIONS ????????
Slight Warning.. bring waterproofs.... just incase ;) we will stop at Llandovery for grub.. so bring some loose change!

If you fancy some company on the way to Magor, I don't mind tagging along, if your going down to magor via Ystrad and Caerphilly I'll pick you up in Ystrad. On the roundabout at the bottom of Ystrad

I want to be down Magor for 10.30 ish.. so just before 10 probably.... BE WARNED... I ride at high speeds along that route at times!
tell you what, the best place to meet at that roundabout, I think there is a bus stop just before that roundabout as you come out of Ystrad.... its only a stones throw from the roundabout... easier to pull in there than get mowed down by a chav or chavette...
tiggers1963
29-03-06, 09:15 PM
is that the one on the right hand side of the road just before you cross the bridge to the by pass (i think theres a dance studio or something there) if so i'll be there by 9.45 to be on the safe side :)
valleyboy
29-03-06, 09:19 PM
as you come out of Ystrad you go over one mini roundabout, then you come to another, turn left to go towards the dual carriage way, and the big roundabout.. well, just before you get to the big roundabout, theres a house/bus stop or something on the left.... this is coming out of ystrad from my direction though...
Yep, think it is just before a bridge... there use to be spilt paint on the road, well.. the paints been there for years now!

As Anna is not coming and if weather stays poor I'll stay over here myself I'd switch your meet point to Aberdare. No point going to Magor now, IMO.
Ooops....forgot about Stretchie
if weather stays poor I'll stay over here
If I didn't know better I'd accuse you of being a fair-weather rider!
So, are we still meeting at Magor or...?

I should be in Aberdare sometime between 11, and 11.30 at the latest.. Im still trying to get my mate to come along on his CBR, but he doesnt usualy wake up till mid-day.. so if you see a red CBR600F.. then that might be my mate...

Im bloody knackered now! just got back from Abergavenny.... came back along the heads of the valley road.. which is one big mass of road works and 30mph limits
I think I will be sleeping tonight!
Wrists ache as well.. or as stretchie put it.. love life down the drain!
Will have to try and get that route done on a warm sunny day, and hope the police still stay away from THAT road!
I think most of us posted personal best top speeds today ;)
Got some photos here, will try and put some up afterwards... :)
Cheers for organising that - it's a good route. Stretch & I had a good little blast down to the M4, which finished it off nicely :D
I'll check my photos & upload any that are different from yours.

One piece.. only just ! Lemmings nearly lost most of his cowling from stones thrown up by my rear tyre as I overtook a car so fast!
It is an EXCELLENT route to do in the dry.. and when no buses/horse carts get in the way!
shall have to see about arranging another one, doing 1000 sheep road with it as well.. and get more peeps along, try and take over that cafe then!

Forgot to say as well.... I on the other hand was VERY lucky to not have done a Superman impression!
Going round a corner rather enthusiastically, when a car coming round the other side started turning into a turn off on my side of the road... I honestly thought I was a gonner! luckily, the driver was not female, and pulled back onto his side rather quickly! ;) That was my moment of heart failiure today anyway!.. some will say I have no heart anyway
