This guy swaped his original wheel for a F3 wheel (5 inch) of a Honda CBR from 1998. Anyone ever done this modification? It looks quite smooth. You can put a 180 tyre on instead of the original 160. 8)
And the only things you need are a F3 wheel, other wheel spacers, a Galfer Wave Rotor and a new sprocket (SunStar, 45 tooth, 525 pitch).

But:

- Does the handling of the bike change if you put a 180 tyre on it instead of a 160?
- Will you still be able to use a wheel hugger (if so - the originale one from the 160 or a modified one to fit the 180 tyre?

PS: Found this on the site:

Do you like going around corners?

It will still go round corners, but not as well as a 160 section. Seems a lot of hassle for just a cosmetic change.

F3 wheels when i last looked were quite expensive.

personally i dont get the purpose for this mod.

It cant be for performance reasons because the 180 tyre will not handle as well as the 160 so offers no benefits there.

I cant see how it can be for cosmetic reasons either unless your gonna change the front wheel to match. Having a 5 spoke rear wheel in black and 3 spoke front in silver looks wrong to me but i guess thats personal opinion huh spose if the wheels were the same colour it would look better.

But why?

I'm sure you've all ridden an Sv with a 180 tyre, to have such strong opinions on the handling ;) 21Quest, on the other hand, really has and I never heard him complain of slower turn-in. Dirty Dog doesn't seem too bothered either- though I'm not sure if he's ever ridden his one yet ;)

If you're all convinced that 180 would stop the bike from cornering well, why don't you take that to its logical conclusion and fit a 150?

180s will tend to turn in slower, but the SV's never been short of turn-in speed anyway. It'll improve midcorner stability due to the larger contact patch (all other things being equal) though it'll add weight as the wheels and tyres are heavier. Less of an issue on the rear than the front though.

I don't like the mismatched wheels though. You wouldn't really want to do this on a standard SV, but since it's a simple matter to make an SV turn faster than most riders will ever want to do on the road, giving some of that away doesn't have to be a loss.

Got a Bandit 12 wheel in the garage to try out... Very similiar mod to the F3 wheel, and it's cosmetically the same as the carbed SV's front- heavier wheel though. Not sure if I'll like it or not, we shall see.

The F3 wheel is ment to be a good wheel as from what i have heard its quite light compared to a similer 180 section.

I liked the mod because it does look nice. And of course... You can not have one black and one silver wheel. But if I install a F3 wheel I would get it painted in silver so it matches the other wheel and the colour of the frame.

I did not know what impact it would have on the turning of the bike... Now I know.
Other wheel hugger will also be necessary, ain't it???

Yep... Heavier than recent GSXR or Kwak, lighter than older GSXR or Bandit, basically. Nice looking as well.

There's a guy on SV Rider who's workingon putting the Honda wheel into the front as well, to tidy things up. But it's a tight fit and a load more work, it seems.

180 tyre on a 5 inch rim is not ideal. 180 tyres are usually fitted on a 5.5 inch rim. The honda CBR wheel would have had a 160 tyre fitted to it originally. Infact most earlier sports 600's ran 160 rear tyres on 5 inch rims and I beleive it is mainly Suzuki who have put 160 tyres on 4.5 inch rims. In my opinion, I beleive 160's on a 4.5 inch rim are a bit pinched. To illustrate my point: I buy used mini twins racing Supercorsa tyres and they aren't scrubbed to the edge (some look like they might be, but when you peel some of the rubber build up at the edge I usually find at least 5mm of unused tyre). I gave some serious consideration to fitting a TDM900 5 inch rear wheel, because it is the same style as the SV650 original wheel, but I was only going to run a 160 on it (I have now decided to have a go at fitting a 5.5 inch wheel and 180 tyre). A reasonably good road rider will use all the tyre with a 160 on 5 inch rim, and the contact patch will be bigger when leant over. Have a close look at a 160's profile on a 4.5; you can see the contact patch will be smaller when leant over. This is not the case wit a 160 on a 5.0 inch or a 180 on a 5.5 inch.

This varies a lot based on tyre manufacturer though... For instance, Avon's 170/60s are designed to fit on a 4.5 rim. All Metzeler and Pirelli 180s on the new carcasses are designed to fit a 5.0.

Are these the ideal or just permissible rim sizes ? Are Supercorsas based on this new carcass ? If so, racers still aren't managing to use all of a 160 on a 4.5 inch rim. So we have little or no chance on the road :!:

Supercorsas are, I think, on the old Corsa carcass, though I could be wrong. Roadtecs and Stradas, and I think Sportec M3s, are oin the newer version. But you should be saying "some racers" or maybe even "most racers"- becuase there are racers out there who can and do run them to the edge.
