View Full Version : intel vs amd
hiya guys, im after a bit of computer help, my laptop decided to go out with a bang a few weeks ago leaveing me only access to the net at work.
ive bin saving my pennys and shoud have about 600 to spend on a nice shiny new comp at the end of the month, im gunna b using it for a lot of downloading, sum gaming and also recording music and dvds,
the thing is im left with a choice betweet intel and amd processers i was intending to get a dell but ive just seen the time website and there prices seem to be cheaper but they all use amd's
please if any one knows the difference between the 2 and what 1 they would recomend it would be a great help, also if any one knows of any other good companys to buy from that would be cool
cheers!
I have run an AMD laptop for 3 and a bit years, and my new PC has AMD power. Not sure on the difference, probably from a developing point of view or summint, but for what you want, it does the job. I also think that AMD are more efficent, but could be, and probably are wrong!

No real differance in any of the machines I use. We use AMD (Opteron) in out servers, and I prefer AMD here.
Emm, I like the Intel Centrino. This seems to be a decent wireless chip.
Check the heat output of the chips you are interested in. The lower the better. Also, check the FSB speeds of the MotherBoard.
Other than that, much of a muchness.
cheers, i dont supose any of you have ever had a TIME pc before i heard of them years ago but i dont think ive ever seen 1 about its usally the dells an hewits but im not sure that common is better, so much choice out there i want to get the most for my money
Wait a while till the Intel Duo chips become more commonplace. They have a very low power req and heat output vs the AMD 64 in laptops.
are they the same as the duel core i keep seeing about?
o and by the way im goin for a desktop this time round fed up with not being able to upgrade an i fine laptops get broken more eassily, ive noticed that amd also do a duel core processer 2 hmm il hav to check out the heat an the chip speeds tmmra supposed to be working but nevermind :)

I think that its a bit silly to use AMD 64 chips in laptop right now for a few reaasons. The intel Duo.. .yeah, this might be a decent chip, low heat etc, but, this dude wants cheap i think.
I bought a machine really cheap, it was a new Toshiba Tecra M2 lap top, but it was refurbished. What Toshiba do, is they build the machines, test them, and some set fail this test.
These (new) machines are sent to be fixed, by Toshiba, but they dont sell them with the rest of the machines.
My machine was perfect, brand new, very cheap, and fast. No problems.
Refurbished new machines... from a reputable vender... are ok for cheapness too. Just to think about...

They bought out Tiny, then went bust  If you can get one very cheap, go for it but don't expect any backup :!:

use AMD and build your own PC
That way if you ever want to upgrade anything it's easy

Just before Christmas I bought a DELL dimension 5150 with Pentium 4 3Ghz processor. Gotta say it's a top piece of kit - wanted to fit a DVD writer and it's really easy to upgrade. Everything just clips in and connects - no botha at all.
Price was £364 inc. flat screen monitor. Bought it from the 'small business' side of the website - the deals seemed a bit better there.
Recommend you don't buy by phoning them - the telephone people are in India and are a pain in the backside - trying to et you to buy all kinds of stuff you don't want or need. Really pushy on the extended warranty bit. Had to get rude with them in the end.
Whether AMD version would have been better I know not, but I'd definitely buy a DELL next time.
Cheers Keith

I wouldnt by from TIME no way not ever... they used to be unbelievably sh*t, I thought they went bust a while ago :?:
The way I always understood it that AMD chips were better for gaming. TBH it all comes down to budget, by the best thing you can afford for your budget and you wont go far wrong. In 6 months time it'll be out of date anyway.
Another vote for Dell from me, a couple of friends have asked me recently to sort them out with PC's I've gone onto the Dell website and found them a PC that they could use for the budget they had, they arrive in the next couple of days and I think the price is reasonable.

Trick to call dell is to say you are a company then they transfer you back to UK sales people. Thats what i found out at my office.

I thought you were talking about buying a laptop for some reason.
If you are getting a desktop, Dell is the way to go. Like Mr Oiled was saying... they are cheap, they work.
(Although, still, as far as I am concerned...AMD vrs Intel, no real differance. Unless you are looking at 64bit.)

Yeah. Consider a reconditioned one.
Make sure its:
New
and
You can return it straight away if there is anything wrong with it.
PS, if you are getting a laptop, make sure you ask them is one dead pixel considered an issue? Can you get a new one if there is a single dead pixel?
Other than that, AFAIK its not that risky a deal.
Oh yes. And load a real OS onto your machine. Ubuntu Linux fits the bill nicely :D
Good luck mate.
