I was chatting to a mate of mine who is quite a bit younger than me and has an RS125. I was showing him my new SV and then his mate turns up riding a CBR400 Baby Blade with L plates!!! At first I thought it was a joke and then he told me he was 17 years old. I asked why he was riding a 400cc bike and he replied "It's alright mate it's legal as I've had it restricted to a 125". So I looked puzzled and asked what the feck he was on about. He then produced from his wallet (which seemed weird) the 33bhp restriction certificate. I tried to tell him it's totally illegal for anyone that has not taken their full A2 test to be riding anything above a 125cc with an output of 14bhp but he was convinced it was legal. Oh deary me.

He's not automatically dangerous just because he's illegal. Not saying it's alright, mind.

Remember, insurance companies are always happy to take your money. They'll only check up on you and look for ways to void your cover when you need to make a claim

Yeah but I've had to give photocopies of my licence etc. Surely he has to do the same?

I've never had to show a copy of my licence to an insurer. He's done his CBT and is really thick. The thing is he rides this bike way too fast has no experience and very rarely wears the proper riding gear. Most of the time it's tracksuit and trainers. He's convinced it's legal as he's paying over £1000 to insure it. Just goes to show that there is no match for natural stupidity. So if you see a Cbr400 with L plates steer clear as the little pleb will probably try to race you and then fall off and injure himslef or worse.

seriously i know hes a friends mate, but report him, he will:

1-give bikers a bad name probably
2-hurt himself eventually...no gear more than the bike...but hey
3-maybe hurt others
4-hike up our insurance if he does the above 2
5-need a serious slap around the wrist to make him actually think before acting and not just taking what a mate said was correct...

i wont go into my personal feelings about him, but they aint good...

Print this http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/rdmcycle.htm advise him to read it and that if you see him on the road again you'll shop him.

Riding a motorcycle is an honour that we all have earned by right of passage, he hasn't; it cheapens it.

If he won't listen he ain't a friend as he'll drag you to his level eventually

You really think I should report him?

Hmm. I hate the idea of it but I know it would be for all the right reasons. What's the betting the police wouldn't do anything anyway!

What Patch said :?

Print off a report and give it to him showing that he is illigal, don't get into an argument just point out that not all cops are thick and if they see a CBR400 with L plates and know their bikes He'll get a tug or a visit at home.... Then it wont be a huge supprise if he does carry on and you do shop him in

It's at least in part the insurers fault but hey.

If he lives in Hampshire i know a very anti-bike traffic sergant that would love to pay him a visit.

I think he lives near Bracknell, Berks. Will get his plate number next time I see him and hand him the info from the DSA website. Then I shall tell him to mend his ways before someone reports him.

insurers will cover you PROVIDING YOU ABIDE WITHIN THE LAWS OF THE LAND

what he is doing is illegal. (duh!!) more than likely he told the insurance he had passed his test. when he meant he had passed his cbt.

yes i work for insurance, but quite often it IS NOT the insurance companies fault when a claim is repudiated, or people have trouble. it is normally - from my 2 years experience, i'd say about 80% of the time - the plebian policy holder, not reading their documentation and fulfulling their part of the contract. *rant over*

this is the best suggestion

Try educating him first and insist he takes further training. Only report him as an absolute last resort.
