OK folks, here's a proposed run. Get a map out and see what you think.

Proposed 8th or 9th April SV Ecosse Run

Basic Run Route:

Start Dobbies Garden Centre, Cumbernauld (Off A80 Next to Shell Garage Sliproad)
Pickup B802 from Cumbernauld to Croy. Then onto B8023 to Twechar. Pick up A803 for 1 mile, then turn onto A891 to Lennoxtown and Strathblane.

Head onto A81, head north to Aberfoyle (A821). Stop in main car pack for ice-cream / coffee /etc. The brave / loonies can use the A821 Dukes Pass to get to Kilmahog. The alternative route to avoid the twisty Dukes Pass is the A81 Port of Menteith road.
There is a pub at the end of the Dukes Pass near Kilmahog, where a marshall can stop and wait for slower riders, etc. *** Newbies beware the Dukes Pass – blind sharp bends come out of nowhere. TAKE YOUR TIME AND ENJOY IT ***

Pick up the A84 at Kilmahog, haul ass north to Lochearnhead. Pick up the A85, head north to Mid Lux. (There is an esso garage called Lix Toll here if you need fuel). At Mid Lux, turn right onto the A827, and head for Aberfeldy along the side of Loch Tay.

Head south down the A826 to Milton. Turn right down the A822 (Amulree Road – cue Jimmy the ambulance….) all the way down to Gilmerton. Turn right down the A85 and head into Crieff town centre. (Plenty of parking here if peeps want a coffee / fag break). Pick up A822 southbound which takes you past Strathearn Tyres in Crieff. Stay on A822 all the way (14 miles) back to the A9.

Finish up at Stirling Services on the M9. It’s then easy to head either east to Edinburgh, or west via the M80 back to Glasgow for the westies.

Total trip for this run would be around 156 miles.

I know Nutty hates the Dukes Pass - sorry pal.. at least I factored in a bypass road.

sounds good to me ,and its kinda central for most.what about the people who dont /cant start at c/nauld we could meet them en-route at one of the stops(im thinkin hazel /grant and any other peeps in outlying areas)if its more convenient for them .But that will (i hope)suit most that are going to show face.count me in anyway

Cumbernauld isn't a major issue for me for the start.

Would probably head off in a different direction after Crieff (Powmill for a scone with the grannies  and down past Knockhill and home).

Suspect the Easties would go this general direction also so I would plan for a group split shortly after Crieff.

EDIT :- If this route is a 'goody' I will post the route map up.

Perhaps  Although I only commute 50-60 miles a day, that is almost 2 hrs spent on my bike everyday in any weather so you might see why I don't feel fully motivated to add a +-150 mile round trip to Weeg before I contemplate a fun day out...

Have fun :D

You could pick it up at Lochearnhead? Or better yet, go up that way, do the pass one way, meet us and go back the other way ;)

sounds good apart from the dukes pass of course. but i wont let it beat me. Ill meet you in aberfoyle if someone gives me an approximate time I will then crawl along dukes pass so ill go at the back as i will be holding up oaps on their bicycles. say nothing about my age.

I'll be right behind you Hazel ;) I want to ride it, just to see what all the fuss is about, but also I'd like to not die, so this seems a sensible middle ground.

andy its not too bad really i have just built it up in my head. did it the day i bought my bike and was nearly taken out by a tourist bus on the wrong side of the road and the road is not wide, there is gravel in every corner and a sheer drop if you run too wide. hopefully it will be too early in the year for the tourist buses. but i will still be doing it very very slowly

carelesschucca
22-03-06, 05:56 PM
there is gravel in every corner

there may well be at this time of year, but normally there's only a couple of the 90 odd corners got gravel, once youve done it a few times you know which ones...

I'm up for it - Can i go at the back please so no-one sees if i come off. In the mood for a challenge

The twechar road however is sh*t. Travel it every day to work. REALLY nasty bend that had me hitting the green stuff.

Need the experience Garrys got me going to skye on 2 wheels in May

ARE YOU OFF YER NUT MAN!!! That road should be shut, even WRC drivers would complain about the state of it... ITS A JOKE!!!

jimmy4237

Let me know about the really bad potholed / gravel traps roads near Twechar, and I'll re-route to completely bypass the offending areas.

Crieff is a perfect place to split up, as if you follow the A823 from Crieff, it runs you right past Knockhill and directly into Dumfernline. A 25 mile run straight to Fife teritory. Just watch out for the loony 17 tonner lorry drivers who seem to regard it as a personal shortcut / racetrack from Crieff (West) to the Fife areas and the Forth Bridge. I'll say no more on that topic...

If peeps are happy with that starting point (somewhere in Cumbernauld / Kilsyth), and happy with the proposed route. (Nutty - you can completely bypass the Dukes Pass by going the A81 Port of Mentieth to Kilmahog). Then lets settle on the route.
Once we give it a try and decide peeps like it via end of run feedback, then we'll call it the SV Ecosse Cumbernauld run.

We're still not decided yet on a date that suits everybody yet though. Time's getting short......

All peeps who want to go on this run PM me your mobile no. so we can keep track of everyone should the s**t hit the fan. I'll print the nos. on the route map so anybody who gets lost can at least phone for assistance / recovery / etc.

Food stops for this run - where's the best places to stop (free easy parking for a pack of bikers..). Then we can factor these into the run, and make them the meeting places.

Jimmy......

....How about pulling off the B8048 at Broadwood and taking a right along the (joins the B802?) under the Croy arches into Kilsyth via Auchenstarry. From there it's back onto your original suggested routeas far as I can see. That would avoid the Twechar road - they closed it a while back and we thought it might get resurfaced - nope - may even have gotten worse if that's possible.

Did I ever tell you all of the day I met Charlie & Ewan down there?????

Oh yes - and good choice of start point - the Old Inns station has been fairly well priced for fuel for a long time now.

OK so what's happening :?

we have one thread, this one, talking about the 8th or the 9th. And another thread still debating other weekend dates.

I'm confused.

SVTONYB
24-03-06, 01:51 AM
In my book that means a rideout on 8th or 9th and a rideout on another date to be ascertained

And dont forget the egg run on the 16th

cant have too many rideouts 8)

jimmy4237
24-03-06, 08:52 PM
Come on folks, make your mind up about what date you want - the 8th or the 9th??? If we dilly daddle about this any longer, we won't manage an april club run..

I'm happy for either, as are most peeps here. Make your voice heard pronto so I can start arranging route maps and directions for people....

I'dd be there on either day- but sunday's better for me. That is officially, no messing, teh last week of the year-and-a-half long respray, one way or hte other- it'll either be finished, or I'm getting evicted :)

jim@55
27-03-06, 02:37 PM
jimmy,-i think the 9th (sunday )is the best bet for most ,so why dont we arrange it for then?we'll have a few peeps that cant make it whatever the date so the 9th looks the one .why dont you start a 'date confirmed' thread as this one is all ooh-ahhs and preferences and one of the mods can sticky it ?thank for sorting this out
