anyone got a step by step guide to doing this on a naked :?: :?:
Haynes manuals are good, but in short you need to use an NWS / Abba stand or similar to get the bike stable, loosen the front wheel spindle a little, get the front wheel off the deck, drop the front wheel & mudguard off, loosen slightly the fork cap (back the preload adjusters right off if you have them) loosen yoke clamps and slide forks out. Invert fork over washing up bowl, undo cap and collect springs, spacer and washer, pump the fork until dry, refil to specified level, add new springs and spacers, re-assemble!
*Waits for missed steps to be highlighted by others*

refil to specified level
what's that then ?
. . . and spacers
and how big should these be ?
Whilst it is a fairly easy op, you do need to be able to work out how to calculate these. I'm sure Dr Squid will be back in a mo to enlighten us. It involves the use of a cable tie and some bouncing up and down in the saddle
From memory, I seem to remember that a piece of plastic drainage pipe from B&Q was the right diameter for the spacer :D

Depending on where you buy the springs, if you give the person on the phone a few details, such as bike, rider weight, how you ride your bike and what sort of road surfaces in general you ride on, they provide the correct springs, spacers and oil in a package.

You'll still need to know how much oil to put in

I bought a set of progressive springs very cheap off Ebay and there were instructions with them that specified an air gap of 140mm IIRC.Easily measured with a short ruler.I used 10w oil and so far so good.
You'll still need to know how much oil to put in
14cm if memory serves me correctly. I shall have to go check on that though.

refil to specified level
what's that then ?
It's the amount of damping oil, the specified level varies from model to model.

I was looking to do this as well. My question is, do you have to do anything with the rear shock after fitting new springs and oil? Actually have many people here replaced the rear shock? (for track and road use).
Thanks
Luke
have contacted Hagon re what oil to fit with their spring and was told 7.5 oil , even though I'm 15 stone .
Read Dr Rictus front end operation thread with interest , what oil was used for the majority of bikes done ?
Re springs any one recommend a particular manafacturer ?
Have used Hagon before , however read on site that Maxton springs are good & 10mm longer therefore don't need extra spacer ?
Cheers Steve

I fitted Hagons to my K3 the other week, went for 10w oil in the end, the spacers are needed the springs are only a cm longer than stock ones.
Make a big diffrence, bike does not dive under braking and feels more composed.
I also fitted a gsxr rear shock as well, well worth doing also.
It is a DIY job to fit springs if you can jack the bike to remove the weight safely so you can drop the fork legs out of the yokes.

Not a problem. Think the wife is abandoning me this weekend so I will be at a loose end. Just two questions.
1. Is it a pointy or curvy? Reason of asking is I have an Abba stand for my curvy, but do not know if it will fit a pointy SV.

Pointy K3, are the springs and spacers the same on a curvy as they are on a pointy?
Makes no difference. The opperation is still the same. When you order the springs, just make sure you tell them what year the bike is.
So does anyone here know if the Abba stand with the fitments for a curvy, also fit a pointy?
