Help!!! My main Fuse Blows everytime I switch on the Lights

Hi Guys

Just joined the site tonight so still unsure if am doing this correctly.

I have a problem with my SV. In the middle of a ride, the bike and all electrics died on me. :(
I changed the main fuse and it started again, :D , that was until i switched on the lights! :(
As I have no ambition to read reams of books, can anybody point me in the direction of the likely fault?

It might be a wire chaffing on the frame somewhere. See if you can trace the wires back from the headlights or headlight switch and see if theres any bare wire or anything like that showing.

Does it blow if you just switch on the sidelight ?

Not sure if it is just the sidelight or main light, dont want to try it again just now as have no spare fuses!! Somebody outside of the forum has suggested it could be a dropped filament in one of the bulbs causing a short? Will have to take a closer look when the rain goes away!

I have a 2001 Curvy Model in metallic blue with full fairing. If you have a yellow x plate it is quite possible i know you!! SFD??

I dont know about the dropped fillament, it could be worth a try, maybe whip the bulbs out one at a time and see what happens then.

My bike blew its main fuse a while ago. The wiring had rubbed on the frame and exposed bare wire. I wouldnt be surprised if yours has done the same somewhere. Its normally round by the headstock or where the loom disappears under the air box IIRC.

Just joking. Welcome and congratulations on choosing the best shape and colour. Hope you get your problem sorted - probably a simple wire chafing. There's a full colour wiring diagram posted somewhere that should help you trace the problem (if it's the right model). Someone will point you to it shortly no doubt.

Curvy SV's had a problem with the wiring loom being rubbed through by the front seat holding bar. But this would blow the fuse without the light on. May be worth checking anyway so it does not cause you another problem.

Just an update for those who responded for my plee for help.

After several hours of searching, wiring testing and stripping lots of panels etc, I found that one of the front fairing bolts (Under the instrument panel) had rubbed through one of the lighting circuit wires causing the short. Lots of tape and a couple hours later, back on the road - No problems!!
