View Full Version : I've been cloned.........
Well Oiled

Well, my bike has. I'm away on a business trip and when I rang home last night my wife said Somerset police had called and said that a blue SV650S with my number plate on it had been illegally riding around there. First thing my wife did was check that my bike was still in the garage, and it was (phew). They then said it was a case of cloning of my registration.
I've never posted pics without blanking out the plate (at least I don't think I have) so I wonder where they got the info from. Now I'm just waiting for any NIP's to roll in. Fortunately Somerset police said just give them a call if I get any and they will sort it.
So watch out - there's a cloner about. Don't put anything out there that links the bike's model and colour with the reg.
Cheers. Keith

Hmmm, I think someone may have cloned my bike if I get a NIP in the post...

Actually, I had the plate nicked off the 'Blade about 6 weeks ago, I reported it to the police, but I'm waiting for that NIP to come through the door....
.
What a brilliant idea! :)

Think I've been cloned too, Mrs Goon's friend saw me chatting up some young lovely the other night while I was at home reading a book. Outragous!
..but seriously, someone had lifted the cover of my bike the other day just above the number plate. Not sure whether to report it, might just be paranoid?

I have never been sure about this cloning lark from the internet or pictures.
What is to stop some scumbag just making a note of your number as you ride past.
When I worked in a garage we managed to register 2 cars with the same number, same colour and model. We only found out 3 years later when one was in for MOT :P

Guy at work got himself arrested for dangerous driving, swore he knew nothing, two weeks later the nips started coming, then arested again for failing to stop after an accident.
What accident the car is in the garage where is the damage. Whilst waiting for his day in court, The ploice arrive to tell his wife that he had been injured in another accident. Well who is lying next to her in bed, and why is the car still perfect in the garage.
Finally they believe him.

Indeed, Karma has a way of sorting things out, its sometimes a little slow but it all balances out in the end.

Cloning is becoming a serious problem, not helped by the governments intent on automated driving standards enforcement (speed cameras etc).
My advice is to make sure there is something non standard about your bikes rear and front ends so that you have a chance of proving pics are not you.
Okay... wait... Do you all not have govn't issued tags? How do you get your tags? Do you buy a blank plate and put the letters and numbers on yourself or what? All tags in the US are stamped sheetmetal so it's a little hard to have your tag "cloned."
It's very easy to have a plate made up over here (plastic letters heat sealed between two layers), even though it should technically be impossible to do.
Here are examples:

No dad, you're wrong, first thing my mum said was "Has Matt been speeding in Taunton" I believe. I also blank all the plates out, for that same reason.

Here in the UK the plate stays with the vehicle for life, it doesn't get renewed each year or whatever. It does in some European countries (Germany etc).
Our Government thinks that the way to stop people cloning vehicles is to regulate the manufacture of plates so that the honest guy has to jump through hoops, present all documents, and pay through the nose and wait for plates to be made. They don't seem to understand that laws only apply to law-abiding people.
Toe-rags who make a living out of breaking the law aren't bothered about regulations. Taxation simply makes crime more profitable. Anyone in the business of stealing cars isn't going to be too bothered about having illegal plates made, probably goes along with their fake passport and driving licence anyway.
Scum-bag walks round superrmarket carpark, finds the car model in the right colour, notes plate, gets one made for his stolen version, and then drives totally immune to speeding/parking/congestion-charge fines etc. After a couple of weeks you pick another car to clone and reset the clock. Good, eh?

Anyone know how many trucks are being cloned, as that was the excuse I was given at a filling station. When fueling a truck, the operator refuses to turn on the pumps until you either give them your credit or fuel card or pay cash up front.
I dont see this happen with cars, but I imagine the amount of scumbags nicking cars and plates is worse

Paying for your fuel prior to filling your tank should be mandatory.
A lot of people will disagree only because they think they are being treated unfairly. But if you have nothing to hide, then why worry????
It will assist in beating the crooks who commit "Drive offs". This alone in the area I work costs petrol stations a coupla thousand pounds per week. And thats only between 7 different petrol stations, inc supermarkets.
Wise up people, this would help towards combating crime.
Think of all the other things we pay for BEFORE we get the product.
Why should fuel be any different?
Just my opinion.

I could understand this if you were clairvoyant, but if you want to fill the tank right up how do you know exactly how much it's going to be, hmm?

It could go a bit like this:-
Insert your card into a chip and pin reader at the pump. The card is taken from you and you insert your P.I.N. to activate the pump. When the desired amount of fuel is attained the P.I.N. is re-entered and you get your card back with the receipt. Shouldn't be too difficult to sort for cash sales either?
This would also help in getting rid of the spotty oik in the kiosk who gives you a hard time just 'cos you're a biker. :D

my next door neighbour has his Mazda RX8 cloned. Its a scary thing to happen if you can't prove where yuo were and the clone runs over a kid or something! Hope they catch it soon.

Are you referring to quikstu?
And Quikstu, tell me honestly how many drive offs you have encountered with truck drivers? :P
they tend to go round shops....and clone the ones in there..from what i was told by cops when mine was cloned...
