Hi all, just wondered - what free software/downloads are there that can be used to resize pictures for avtars etc?
I used to have a piece of software on my pc (cant remember its name) but when it crashed and i had to do a full reinstall i lost it.
Can anyone recommend any?
Many Thanks.

Paint is one of the world's worst pieces of software, it doesn't use Bilinear and Bicubic resampling, just pixel for pixel, and thus you end up with a crap looking image.
Plenty of freeware image editors available, some of them here:

i always use ulead photo express 3, seems to cope with anything.
Don't forget the GIMP :D
The trouble with The Gimp is that although it's technically very good, it's for the pro or enthusiast, and needs a whole load of understanding that most folk don't want to be arsed with. User-friendly it isn't.

I quite like PSP. We've got a really old, quality version of it on one machine and a really new, sawn-off version of it on another, and both work rather nicely. it used to be a perennial favorite on PC mag cover discs (along with Winzip, the people's favourite, fondly remembered for "You are now on day 1398 of your 30 day trial period"

Yes and no. It used to be worse, but Gimp 2,2 is quite usable IMO. Very usable if you are familiar with photoshop.
To Resize:
Go to Image tab;
Select Scale Image;
Select the image size (in pixels if you like);
click "Scale";
Save;
Happy days.

I rest my case ;).

Bilinear and Bicubic resampling...
:? What dat den :?:
The Gimp for me too.
For general editing, lighting, cut, cropping, googles picasa is very good and easy to use.
It's where pixel interpolation of one value against another is used to determine the next pixel created when images are resized, a form of anti-aliasing. As opposed to pixel by pixel (or nearist neighbour) where the values are just amplified and you get those horrid jagged artifacts.

There is that one from Google thats fairly nifty. Me i like PSP for the simple things especialy as it has scripting in python to do various things, but its not free.
I still use PSP5 on a daily basis, simply because it loads instantly and has 99% of the features that I require, never crashes, and has become a much loved old-faithful.
I hated 6, 7, 8, & 9. Version 10 I'm thinking about, though would still use 5 because it's so quick.
Then there's Fireworks, one of the most under-rated pieces of graphics software, that allows super-quick layouts (as it's object-oriented), and then of course Xara - but I digress... :wink:

I use paint, but if you post large images in the South West Surfers section of this forum then you get some software called "Dr Rich" that resizes your pictures for you.
:lol: :lol:
If you have Microsoft Office, you can use Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
You can also download Windows XP Image Resizer powertoy...
Get it here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx)
Its really easy to use too... :D
