As some of you will know from this (http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=35338&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) post, I had an off on my new K5 naked last week...
Well I've been to see it, and the prognosis is not good  The repair bill is £3k + VAT, meaning they'll probably write it off. Contrary to my first thoughts the frame is OK, but both the upper fork legs are bent, all the nose cone/headlamp/clock assy is dead, new exhaust (£600 WTF!), new lock set, couple of clamps etc....
Here are the pics...

I thought I was prepared for this but I'm sitting here feeling really gutted. It's just started to sink in that I'm not getting it back
Just have to wait for the official outcome, but due to the price of the spares, I seriously doubt that I'll be riding it again.

Ouch. Really sorry to hear that it's curtains for the bike; I really liked it, one of my favourite K5s.
Brings a tear to the eye to see that :(
Hope you are thinking of replacing it with another tho Steve :D

Well the official verdict is diesel, the guy that collected the bike said he could smell it on the front tyre, so now I understand why I went **** over tit, and why the engine revs went up...
The people at the body shop where the bike is say that generally most insurance companies have a deal with a salvage place that agree to pay a percentage of the bikes pre accident value, which is normally about 38%. That would be £1672.00, then I would have to "better" that offer, so say £1700...
Remember it would be recorded as a "write off" so it's value would be less, and I'd probably want to put a GSXR front on it. I don't think it would be economical for me to do that. But it may be worth breaking, as it's all so new.
The dealer has said they'd do me a good deal on a replacement machine, done the same. I still have the hugger and a few other bits to make it nice so I think, if I get the right money from the insurance company, that's what I'll do....
.
Oh ****. :x
They be sneaky little beggars these second bikes. Sorry, some of us should have warned you.
You get them for all the right reasons, commuting economy, winter, save wear and tear on your main pride and joy...
... they're just a sensible financial move...
... then the little blighters sneak into your good graces and you feel bad when the bad stuff happens. Even though 'Bad Stuff TM' is precisely why you bought them in the first place.
Just remember folks, motorbikes are not just machines - they are carriers of a virulent tarmac born virus = they MAKE you like them!

Steve...dear me I had no idea the meter would be running up like that on repair costs! I am sure it will all work out right mate.
Same.. Could easy be fixed if you don't use new...

Sorry to hear of the outcome, Steve. :( But at least you've still got your Fireblade.
Sorry to hear this Steve.
I didn't want to say anything when you first posted about your off but SVs are expensive to repair if you get it done at a garage and I found this out when I got quoted pretty much the same as you did when I had my off, mine wasn't damaged as badly as yours but this included replacing the plastics as well. The cost of the exhaust is a joke but this is apparently because it has a catalytic converter in it.
Thats alright, buy it back, gsxr front end, some bates lights. Proper streetfighter sv!
Dan
3k? Blimey!
So now you have the simple choice of taking Dan's suggestion and buying it back and streetfightering it (certainly not a bad idea, and will allow you to have it just how you'd like it), or getting an identical SV and keeping it pretty much stock.
At least you've got FC insurance.

Bad luck Steve, it's not nice waving goodbye to a bike
eesh looks like mine looked but a lil better... mine was a faired one
That was such a sweet looking bike Jelster.
If it were me, I'd be going down the new purchase route. I'm sure the insurance would give you a 'nearly new price' payout.
Then again you're not bike-less in the meantime, so the GSXR upgrade is always an option. You'd have about £2K-ish left to sort it, yeah? Better handling, looks and re-sale value......hmmmm.
Most importantly you'd be resurrecting an SV from the grave, Hurrah!!!

Mate I know exactly what you are going through as I'm doing the same. Hope you have gap insurance or a 1 for 1 policy.......know i wish i did!

But is buying it back really worth it ??
So I'd have to get 2 upper fork legs, a triple clamp and headstock (all on the "replace" list). I did think about a GSXR front end, but on reflection I can't see the point. If it was going to be my main bike then perhaps. I'd then still need to convert it to take conventional bars rather than clip ons... Maybe I could find a Minitwins racer that had a stock front end for sale ??
Then there's the ignition switch and loom, that looks pretty complicated.
New Clocks (they are over £200!)
The straight forward stuff:
Rear Brake lever
Front Brake lever
Headlamps
Can (I already have the Remus that went on the day it went over)
Basically, I reckon it would cost me the best part of a grand to put it back together, I can't see the point in using 2nd had parts, the bike's brand new, so I'd want to keep it that way.
Matbe this is fates way of telling me that I shouldn't have gone back to an SV in the first place.... Now, maybe a GSX1400 ??? (Only joking...)

If you did go GSXR, chances are you could get the barrel and key with it. It's connector should fit the SV too but that's immaterial.
It needs a headstock. :(
Then it's bye-bye really.
Sorry to hear about your off and the cost of repair.
I didn't realise as I do not go the the Soho section.
It gutted me to see the pics of the Bike as it was, as others have said, 1 of the best looking K5 Nakeds. I can remember seeing it when you 1st posted it and thinking it looked real cool.
It is hard to understand how the cost can mount up when visually it looks like 25% of the Bike needs replacing but the cost is more like 75% of the Bike in the 1st. place.
I remember reading in MCN about 4 - 6 weeks ago about it being possible to claim for accidents caused through deisel spills.
Maybe you could enquire about this.
Hope it all works out for you.

If the headstock was damaged would that not mean the frame is a write off?

With respect Howard, the Speed Four fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. I think it's a disgusting looking bike, personally....
The 2004/5 Speed Triple is a different matter.......
Headstock - the top is badly scratched from where the keyring was forced against it. It's not structural, just cosmetic.

Look at it this way; aren't you glad this happened to your "winter hack" SV, rather than your 'blade? As someone else pointed out, it's unfortunate that bikes tend to make you like them, so even something bought purely as transport is "loved" and consequently missed when this sort of thing happens.

buy it back and sell the bits on here, i'm sure you'd soon get up to £1500
Thats @rse mate - that was a cracking looking bike (it made me want to powder coat my wheels gold - in fact i still want to).
Hope you get a good payout and another bike sorted.

A*se if that was me I would be well annoyed.
At least you know now that it was diesel that caused it.

:( Sounds like it wouldn't make sense to buy it back, in your shoes. But it's too nice to break. Hopefully someone'll have it as a rebuild. But not at £1700 I think, not with that damage.
Sometimes the smart thing to do is just walk away. There's little point in putting it back to standard, it'd be expensive... But there's not much point in putting the effort into making a special for what you use it for. Take the money and run, and if it's a second bike you want, get a scabbier one :) And just be glad it wasn't the blade.
