View Full Version : Fish tank
Question for all you mathmatical genius's out there.
Someone in our office has bought a 4ftx1ftx1ft tank.
Can anyone equate this into how much water is needed to fill it?
He wants to know for the amount of pumps required.
I worked it out at 55 gallons...but then i aint no Carol Vorderman and it's probably completely wrong
Cheers

Bit of a cack handed way of doing it but...
4' x 1' x 1' =
121.92cm x 30.48cm x 30.48cm = 113267.386cc or 113.3 Litres
4.54 litres to a gallon - 113.3/4.54 = 24.9 Gallons
*** EDIT - Note to self read previous posts and click on links first  ***
Cheers fellas...how the hell i got too know 55 gallons i'll never know

I'd have answer "4 cubic feet" and been both totaly accurate and completely unhelpful.

Yeah. Check this. I know that a lot of th aquarium stuff is rated in US gallons.
Actually, best bet would be work it out in litres, and the pump thing will give litres per hour too.
Or, just buy a Fluval 304.
(ps, are you sure the tank is that size? that seems odd to me. Usually if they are 4 foot long, they will make them a little higher than 1 foot, since its a more pleaseing ratio for the eye or something :?

I am an avid aquarist - if your mate has any questions on his tank, set up, fish etc get him to drop me an email, I will help if I can.
Also - do check the measurement as 4x1x1 sounds way off - I would have thought it would be 2 ft deep to give any sort of real use.
Cheers,
Si

Very concerning that my 7yo hasn't much idea what a gallon is but she is very happy with litres. Mind, when did you last buy a gallon of anything. She doesn't really know what a yard is (it's the paved bit outside  ) but is very happy if I say something's a metre long. And as for ounces, well forget it.

Nope, US Gallon = 20% less than UK gallon, so 24.9 UK galls = about 30 US galls.
