View Full Version : What's the most stupid thing you've done today?
Bet you can't beat me!
I went to a funeral of a friend's relative today. Turned up, sat in waiting room and followed everyone into the chapel. Only I managed to walk into the wrong funeral, they have two chapels in the one crematorium.
So I had to sit through the funeral of a certain Harry King who I understand has led a full and interesting life and even played for a wartime Scotland rugby team. #-o
Tempting though it was I didn't go back to the hotel for tea and scones!

I got flashed by a mobile speed camera. I went past it doing a solid 90mph.
I thought it was somebody from the highways agency doing surveying as it was just a bloke with a Hiz Viz and a tripod. Then I wandered why he was taking my picture
That'll be another 3 points then.
Not done anything that stupid today, had a complete spaz moment yesterday.
Turning right into my road, had to stop as there was a car coming the other way,
quick check of the mirror and lifesaver and pulled away, for no apperant reason lost my balance and nearly dropped it at 3mph, paddled across the road both feet down CBT style

90 in a dual carriage way up North (Yorkshire) is likely to get you closer to 5 in the form of a nice court appearence.

Dual Carrirage Main trunk road. Speed limit is 70mph. Its my fault I shouldnt have been speeding.
Theres a good article in MCN this week about using a template letter on www.pepipoo.com to get off the offense. I think I might find out more about doing that.
really? i find that a complete waste of the courts time and a very excessive punishment. not befitting the crime.

It was along a narrow pedestrianised street in the centre of a local village. My pass just happened to coincide with the Woman's Guild morning walkabout.

Thats why I hate speed cameras especially the mobile ones. At least if you get pulled by a police officer you get the chance to apologise and then they have the choice of using a bit of descretion and read you the riot act and send you on your way.

Certainly is experience.. I was polite, stopped straight away, was courtious (sp) Also i hadn't been doing anything "wreckless" so to speak, just sat on the inside lane, no traffic about, doing 90 - ( i never did above 96 as its an instant ban) and cop car pulled out of a side junction that i hadn't seen (one of those junctions where you cant see in until you've passed it) and he pulled me.
Rest is history - i guess it could also come down to the age thing.. you see a young lad on a bike doing 90.. lets book him teach him a lesson - you see a mature adult on a bike doing the same thing, they're generally more lenient towards you.
GYKD didnt you try to outrun the police? or am i thinking of another incident? and isn't it anything over 100mph "may" result in a ban?

 That was a seperate incident. The one you're thinking of was last July when i was 1 point away from being banned for a minimum of 6 months so i decided to risk all and took off.
In the end it went to court and i walked away with a SDP of 6 weeks - no points, small fine... Job done.
As far as i'm aware, anything over 96 on a 70 zone goes straight to the courts and results in an immediate ban. IIRC.

I dont think you are quite correct. I got pulled for 95.8mph on the M5 in 2001. The police officer told me that I was very lucky and that over 98mph would have meant a court appearance. He also explained that should I wish to contest the speeding ticket in court, which I was within my rights to do. It may result in a larger fine and more points or maybe even a ban.

99.10... went to court didn't even think of a ban... 4 pionts 300 quid.
97.5... 2nd time... officer told me I was over 85 so it was to be a court date, they wanted to ban me but decided 5 points and 500 quid in fines would be better.

There is ultimately no clear cut rule of law for speeding. There are "guidelines" about what an officer should do at any given speed, but at the end of the day they have that wonderful thing called "discretion". Meaning that they can effectively do with you as they please. Thats why some people get lesser sentences (fixed penalty) and others get taken to Court for it. Each case is different - obviously.
I know what i got in my experience, which is obviously different to what other people may have received for higher/lower speeds etc. There is no rhythem nor ryhme to the penalties dished out.

Indeed. Even if it winds up in court, the magistrate only has "guidelines" to work with; rather than fixed penalties.
Also strangely the penalties for Motorways are steeper then dual carriage ways, which is odd as I would have thought motorways are designed for high speed travel?

I think today is one of my first days in a while where I didn't do anything stupid before lunch.
On the speeding ticket front, it looks like I got away with all but one of mine, just got the fixed penalty offer through the post. 3 points and £60 for 87 in a 70.

They're also the safest roads to be on.
But not at the side of, as people drop bikes on you...

Not hitting the guy who pulled up on the LHS of the road in front of me, and as I started to overtake decided he needed to be on the other side of the road.
Fortunately my brakes & instinct worked. He apologised and I never shouted at him.
I just hope he learnt to look properly before manouevring in the future. But I am sure a kevlar armoured glove in the face would have reinforced the think bike lecture I delivered to him.

Agreed.
Sometimes, its better to ignore the ass hole coppers who can give real attitude and go straight to the courts.
Usually the officer wont be at court so its easier to go and explain your actions.
6 points, £400 fine for my above speeds! No ban.

Yep. Maximimum fine is "only" £1000 on dual carriageways as opposed to £2500 on motorways. I'm glad it was a dual carriageway rather than a motorway that I got caught (allegedly) doing over a ton on (in a Corsa too, Daimo). Hopefully it should make them inclined to be a bit more lenient than if it had been on a motorway, although, as you say, I can't see why exactly.

there _must_ be legal implications with that, especially if your registration is not filmed, and you are wearing motorcycle clothing which makes positive ID almost impossible, and if the operators are civilian which goes against the requirement for a Police Officer to judge that a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit. anyone can make a mistake when writing a reg down from a distance.
also i believe they are not allowed to simply film everyone who goes past and must make the appropriate judgements first prior to the filming which is then given as primary evidence if it goes to court and must come from the officer making the judgement either by a verbal or signed statement. the video simply backs up the judgement of the officer.
not only that these devices aren't tested on bikes and they often are used at or exceeding the maximum distance limits, which also questions the ability of a person to judge speeds reasonably from these differences. these devices are licensed to be used up to 1000 ft:
a) i'd question anyone who says they can tell the difference between 30 and 35mph at this distance
b) i'd question the accuracy of the laser equipment and how they can possibly focus it accurately enough not to produce any distance errors.

Ah yes, but even beyond that they still stand up in court. I was clocked at 1068ft, going away from them... i had a letter from the manufacturer saying they are only accurate up to 1000ft.. but the case still went ahead against me. Lost my license as a result of it.
