It is stainless. Just, y'know, rubbish stainless. OS Stainles or Zorstec could make you one up from yours as a template, i think, but it won't be all that cheap.

This is something I've been looking at and I've found ceramic coating is the answer!

quill do downpipes for the sv you know
there is a seller on ebay that does em for 180 quid for the CBR, the quality is supposed to be great, as a number of people on the CBR forum have em.
Remember seeing on another forum how someone had painted there exhaust system themselves, quite like the look of the downpipe done in black, not sure how the finish would fair up with the heat, here is the link

just had a look at the camcoat website the quality looks excellent, couldnt bring myself to spend that money to get a exhaust covered though, DIY for me, being a tight wad
bikageboy thanks for the offer the high temp paint but its a long way to come from the Isle of Man :) have seen it in the shops over just wondered if it was any good

Noice Cloggs. Nice.
I suppose they will ship out to the yankee land. By golly, this Sterling business is going to sting a bit though. Oooh yes.

Why not search in google for ceramic coating? It brings up loads of places in the States that will do it as well.
Just by doing a quick search I found:

the reason the downpipe discolours so easily is not the quality of the stainless but the finish. what i mean is that it is what is called mill finish, that is that its how it comes out after extruding. if you polish it with wet and dry starting from 400 or 600 grit and working up to 1200 grit then solvol it stays shiny for months. i did mine years ago and only polish it a couple of times ayear, the rest of the time i just wash with good wash n wax shampoo and it looks great. it really doesn,t take that long or is that onerous a task

Hi, the header pipe on my K3 was damaged in a crash - Ive been looking for a replacement - (also need radiator and complete front end - GSXR???). Ive seen a couple of header pipes from the 'curvy' SV that are in my budget - will they fit a K3 model?
Cheers

mmmmm - I will try if I can get one cheap enough - there's no way of measuring up as the pipe is properly schmangled!!! As the engine is basically the same (?) it may work with some bodging until i can sort out a proper replacement. I need to get her up and running - check all is A-OK before repairing 'properly'.
Any suggestions on where to source a cheap and cheerful (but watertight) radiator (doesnt matter if its a bit bent and battered at thi stage!!!). Ive got an old hornet rad, but its not even close....
Cheers

I might have one mate. But, I am in the US at the moment. Let me make sure its ok wrt not leaking and PM me later if you still need one. NB, one issue with it is that it is missing one of the little L bosses used to bolt it to the frame.

Is there any reason why you can't take it to a plating shop and have it chromed? A local plating shop would dip it in the old acid bath and no doubt give an excellent quality of finish?
Ok not the same kind of bike but the down pipe on my bike has not suffered from this at all, although on my K3 it needed a bit of spit and polish every couple of weeks and that was with dry weather riding! :?

So, this could be total horse poo, but, if you plate this pipe with chrome, which I suppose has a diff expansion co-eff to the actual pipe, would the amount of heat that this pipe suffers mean that the chrome would crack and peel? Like, I have seen my pipes glowing at night just at the head part.

Your "Theory and Innovations of Industrial Metalurgy in the modern Age"? Phhh. Yeah right. You mean the "Theory and Innovations of Industrial Metalurgy in the modern Age" that you "borrowed" off Sid Squid.
Just because Sid has the pertinent tables tatooed onto the inside of his leg...
