What purpose do those sweatbands serve other then for advertising the HRC brand?

From what I understand, they are supposed to catch any spillage/leakage from the brake master cylinder, not sure how true this is though.

I have seen a few bikes from the U.S with these on. I am not at all sure that they serve any real purpose at all, although I am willing to be emlightened? :?

you've got a couple of mates in gp? do you mean the traffic lights on the start/finish straight?
real world thats a good solution, but i don't think thats what they're for on the gp bikes

Some people say it's to stop the sunlight degrading the brake fluid. Myself, I think that's one of the stupider things I've ever heard, but you never know.
I heard years ago, it's to stop the fluid spillage on screwtop m/c's. When unscrewing and topping up.
Makes perfect sense to me.

I was told its to soak seepage when the fluid gets hot and expands.
Where can I get some for my CBR?!

....sorry, you're all wrong, it's for when you stop at lights and just have to boogie!
...'Fame' style, can work up a mean sweat.

I was told that they were handy for the rider to keep a pen in so as to be able to give autographs to the corner marshalls on slow down laps.
 so many different reasons...maybe its so when the rider is racing he isnt distracted by the fluid sloshing from left to right... oh and also another chance to advertise i mean look, the labels are clearly pointed at the camera! :D

I heard many GP racers like a game of tennis immediately after the race and carry spare wrist bands to stop their hands getting sweaty and to wipe their foreheads. Is this an urban myth?

Apparently the bands are soaked in water before the race to help keep the brake fluid cool.
I've been informed from a reliable source

I was under the impression they are soaked in water to keep the fluid cool while the race goes on as lets face it it will heat up a lot.

Here's another "sensible" (although, ironically, it's stupid) answer:
Sweatbands are also used on bikes by West Coast "pimped" bike riders (who invariably have 500bhp busas then ride them in attire that'd be under-dressed for the beach) and a few who follow that style in Tokyo. However, they're put on top of your footwear, on the left hand toe end, to stop the gear change lever marking your chav-white trainers :!:
Told you it was stupid. But serious. 8)
Apparently, after the race they are used to tie the legs of 2 emus together to have a three legged emu race.
Gibernau didn't agree with this which is why he moved to Ducati this year.
