In vernas new place, she cant get a decent picture on her TV. I have tried a 50db gain, amplified ariel, anmongst other amplifiers etc but with no success. Its a rented property so whacking a huge outsdie ariel is a no go, nor a loft ariel as there would be no way to get the cable into her room.

So i need either some ideas please.

She live in Sanderstead in surrey

Have you checked where the nearest transmitter is? Somtimes there are two nearby but due to LOS (Line of Sight) etc... you are better off using the other one.

Have a look here.

Id say ditch the TV and go down the pub, except Sanderstead is Quakerville and there are no pubs to go to unless you head to Purley or Warlingham or Croydon.

I would guess the problem is the hills there. In which case bugger all you can really do without putting up an outside aerial. :(

TSM, that was going to be my next challenge. Crystal Palace is the most powerful, but i have noticed that there are a couple of more local transmitters. Verna live on the top of sanderstead, so i would have thought not a problem.

Lyn, going down the pub costs money, and watching TV doesnt. Just annoying that if you do want to watch something, you cant!

The other thing is get a sky box installed on freeview (abt £100 or less if you are a dab hand like me at installing sky) and you will get all the free digital chanels.

Cant drill holes etc as its a rented house. They are apprently having sky installed in the lounge, but this dont solve the issue when you have a TV but cant watch it

I had this problem in a flat i used to live in. I never managed to solve it, i got a powerful amplified ariel and a freeview box and I could just about get BBC1 but that was it, i just used to watch alot of DVD's.

If you are realy desperate, i have seen people put the dish on a stand near a window.

Its going a bit far though.

The otherthing is that if you can get HomeChoice, its a broadband system so all you need is a BT telephone line.

Again, not an option.

Looks like no TV for verna :(

So remind me how free the TV licence is? :P

Seriously I know the problem as Ive lived in Sanderstead for about 8 years in the past. But part of the problem was I was in a dip so needed the external aerial.

TSM really hit the nail on the head with the broadband thing being the only option if you cant put up an aerial. Though if theyre getting Sky they should be able to have that tuned properly?? And if thats tuned then you get all the channels with it including BBC/ITV etc. Or thats my understanding of it.

So BBC is getting her own place.

Sorry I don't understand why she needs terrestrial TV. After all just put a vid on and follow the action

Best off without the damn TV.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do at all. I live in an area where it is impossible to receive terrestrial TV unless I want to spend about a £1000 on a high gain antenna. Seriously, nothing else gets a signal.

The only option that I had was to get sky. Because the walls of my house are wooden clad over brick, I could not have the dish mounted to the house. I have the dish mounted to a pole in the back garden. Is this not an option for you?

To be sure that you can not receive a signal using conventional means I would hire the services of a aerial/dish installer. He should be able to tell you exactly what type of aerial that you need. Depending on which transmitter you need to point at to get a signal, will depend on what type of aerial you need. If memory serves me correctly (it's been a while since I qualified) there are 5 different types (bands) of aerial that can be used.

The other thing to do is speak to your neighbours, and see what they have done. They, after all, have been there for longer than you have, and will almost definitely know the answer to your problems.

My solution when I was in a place with no reception:

Get mates to tape you anything you really want to watch and stop "channel hopping" sitting in front of the box, just killing time.

I did this for a year and I still watch very little television. It's incredible how much more free time it gives you each day.
