Oil Level Low, (I think).

Ive stood my bike upright (with the aid of a friend) and looked into the little oil window and I cant see any oil. We tipped it to the right and eventually some oil swilled up to the line. Now should it have been there when it was upright??? It couldnt be seen with cold engine, and also after 10 mins ticking over. I dont wanna do any damage to my bike so if I need some oil now, can someone tell me I do?

Also, when it does need some more, do I just 'top up' or (as some websites say) drain the crank case thingymabob first??? (Please bare in mind I dont really know the names of ALL parts of my engine so go easy on your explanaition termanoligy please).

With the bike upright on level ground the oil should be visible in the glass between the level lines.If it is low top it up a bit at a time until the level is right.Do it right now as running the engine with not enough oil in it will cause it to go bang and make a £1000 hole in your pocket.There are several members of this site can give hard earned advice on this. :(

Stand the bike up as you did. Make sure it is on flat level ground (makes a big difference)

Bike should be on the balance point on the tyres. Look into the sight glass, level when cold should at the minimum be on the lower level. If you can't see any oil at all, then I suggest you put some in before doing a warm check.

Start the engine and let it run until the outer casing is warm. Switch off wait two minutes and check the level again. Top up as necessary. Adding small amounts at a time, allow the oil to settle and check again. Repeat process until correct level is achieved.
