Mileage on the engine shouldn't be that bad, fair bit of life in it yet. A-classes themselves do have a reputation for falling apart in your hands though....

oo do they !!..
its a 170 Diesel CDI

We have a T reg A170 that's gone well past 100k and it's fine. Does 65mpg if you keep the rev's around 2500 and its a semi-automatic (Tiptronic - manual change gearbox and no clutch pedal) 1.7CDI so does go well.
Never had anything major go wrong on it at all. Jax bought it with only 6000 miles on it, 6yrs ago. Electric window fuse sometimes moves in the fusebox, but it just needs reseating occasionally. Service them regularly. They are mercedes and they run and run. Bonnet and windscreen are prone to stone chips coz of the sloping style front. Just make sure that it's been serviced properly.

Jax has THRASHED ours, she thinks she's participating in a full-on rally whenever she's driving. Ours hasn't fallen apart. Never ever had a problem.

Ok so educate me - i am so crap on cars.. 65mpg is what in terms of £££...

say 250 miles would cost you how much in quids??

just lazy - I could do the math I suppose .......

suppose its roughly half of petrol costs...??

You can remove all the seats, and if you have the long wheel based version then you could probably fit the SV in it. Though the boot lip makes that idea a no no, there are even 'strap' points in the floor.
The largest object we've had in there was a double bed and mattress, with the boot shut and rear seats removed.

Most cars are doing well if they get to 45mpg on unleaded.

cool great info .....

thanks a bunch ...

just need a diesel.... doin a lot of miles - but my lust for a mercedes means moving back a few years and gainaing some miles.

have a 1.2 sxi corsa (easytronic) at moment..5 door... on an 02.. but it eats petrol...!!

however-- ! ! ! if I only get 4k part ex for it and have to go back to a 2000 plate wiht 80K miles on !!..... (mines only got 23K on)

it may be false economy and my vanity and heart ruling my head......... cos I may lose out- cud be cheaper to jsut run the corsa and get a better residual..??.. I dunno -- and... I know the history of the corsa... was my dads from new !! then me !........ I do liek the merc though - I carry a lot of stock and do a lot of deliveries..!!

Insurance on diesal cars is a little more (normally by 1 group) than the petrol equivalent, as is servicing. I Reckon your reasearch should include you doing the maths rather than just going with your heart; unless of course, cost and money is no object to you.

Look up "what car" and see what else sits along side the A class in the price/type bracket, then make an informed decision - if someone offers you help and advice though, it's always advisable to be grateful rather than dismissing them as fools, especially when you can't be bothered yourself.....

Hoodlum THANK YOU for your advice.!!

however

you havemade 8 posts.....!!! I take it you are "new" ..... so unless you have sat inthe wings and earwigged for a year or two you will see that most of my 2000 posts are tongue in cheek.!!

This forum is ace- so friendly and helpfull - i would never dismiss advice from anyone but moreover this forum is FUN and everyone takes the mick !- please read posts by scoobs or peter henry
or el bocc...oh - or anyone !!!!!!...............

dont take yourself or ME too seriously....

thanks for the advice ( first paragraph at least) <<< NB: that means i am joooookinnnng !

Ok so educate me - i am so crap on cars.. 65mpg is what in terms of £££...

Quick example.. I had a 2.0 Honda Accord petrol, cost £38 to fill the tank and I got 280-300 miles per tank..

My sister had a 2.0 Ford Mondeo. Similar sized tank got 550 miles per tank.. And that is me driving both cars in the same way..

Hope that helps..

Even better if you get a smaller car with a smaller engine

65mpg out of a diesel car is briliant. There's not many cars out there, especially diesels... that can manage that sort of mpg. The wee A-class merc is good to drive, quiet, and comfy as hell.. My mate had one, and got over 500 miles to a tank of diesel :D

Mercs are bullet proof, they go forever with an oil change every 6K miles and regular servicing. They're also rather good at holding their value  A Corsa 1.2 is greedy on petrol, and it's residual value after 3 years is crap. Hold onto it any longer, and you'll be shocked at the trade it price

Just make sure you service the merc regularly, it'll do you proud service over many years..

My Merc lorry that I drive has now covered 485,600 km in just over 3 years. That's a lot of diesel burnt at 7.6mpg

I've had 44mpg on a long run being reasonably conservative on the accelerator pedal. Usually get around 30mpg on average. 2 litre Golf GTI.

the milage aint that bad check who owned it last whether it was a fleet car or not, came belt should be ok for about 120k, but you need to find out if the rear wishbones have been replaced this was a big issue with the a class, when i woked in the motor trade we wouldnt touch em if they hadnt been done

some years ago i had a fiesta diesel, now it was a really crap car but the mpg was great! on a run i work'd it out at late 60s!! which is great cuz the 1.8 petrol focus i drive now is averaging 27mpg  the 1.8 fiesta d is one group higher than my focus 1.8 zetec which doesnt really make sence cuz the fiestas 0-60 was 17seconds!

my insurance on the fiesta was £550 comp for me and the wife, the focus is £300 comp me and wifey! seems like alot more car and performance for less cash.

My (slow as hell) VW Polo 1.9SDi gets 60mpg EVERYTIME!

0-60 is well in excess of 10secs but who gives a sh*t.

Cheap to run & cheap to insure as it's group 2. Currently £185 fully comp.

At first it was a snobbery thing with the Polo, but after 1yrs faultless ownership I love it.

Bulletproof engineering from VW.

1yr old, 5800miles!!!!
