View Full Version : MOT certificates - can't have text over written?
I got told by the post office clerk that I need to change my MOT certificate, because the garage filled in "1006" for the year and scribbled over the "1" to make it "2006". He said that If I showed that to the police I could be in trouble! Does that sound about right?
Thanks in advance...
Ps. Don't get in arrears with your road tax. It's a pain to sort out!
That sounds ridiculous imho. Personally, I almost always have trouble with post office people, I mean, how realistic is it that your MOT certificate was originally issued n 1006?
typical busy body that works in a post office by the sounds of it.
i say torch the place. after making sure everybody is out and at a safe distance.
and that all stock has been removed.
and that the fire service are at the scene.
actually, better not.
They were like "You're in arrears with your road tax"
So I said "No **** sherlock"
"They're going to fine you."
"Tell me something I don't know"
"Not sure I should give you this tax disc"
"Give me the tax disc or I will set you on fire"
..No wonder you're having trouble getting Tax.
You've waited a thousand years to tax it.
Did you have a SORN for that time??
I don't think you'll get in trouble by :plod: as you never filled out the MOT, did you. If it was the LAST number ie, 2005 to 2006 then it'd be debatible.
Besides, it's all becoming computer generated now and you only get a piece of A4 to say it's done and info. is stored on a central PC.
About frickin' time. Can I set up a direct debit for my road tax as well? Would have saved me a lot of money.

When I went to tax the SV last time I'd SORNED it for a couple of months since I wasn't riding it. Rode it into town anyway to tax it at the big PO and they made atotal scene because I'd obviously ridden untaxed- I had all my gear on. It was quite funny...
"Did you ride while you were SORN?"
"Yup"
"You're not supposed to do that"
"Yup"
"Why?"
"Couldn't be bothered to take the bus, frankly"
"That's ILLEGAL!"
"Yup, so's my exhaust and my visor. Oh, and my number plate"
"But that's WRONG!" "
"I think you'll find that I'm paying for a tax disc, not for moral support"
"..."
"So, about that tax disc"
They ended up getting everyone out to check over my documents, obviously dying to find some fault they could refuse it for ;)
You lot just make me laugh.
As for the MOT cert. No, it needs to be printed and not over written. however, the copper that stops you may be understanding as its 1006. Still need to get a duplicate, at the testers expense.
Its legal for you to ride to & from a MOT station without road tax or MOT as long as the bike is insured. I had to do that.
As for road tax, well as long as your bike is MOT ok & you have insurace then whats the fuss about riding it to the PO. Its legal for you to ride it from the MOT station back home so you could say that you were riding back from the MOT station & that you would only be getting a Tax disk if your bike had passed its MOT which is what the insurance company are looking for to say that your bike is roadworthy.
Silly nobs at the PO.

Northwind you crack me up! I don't know why PO clerks seem to think they have the right to know the ins and outs of your business. Have you noticed how most PO clerks are REALLY ugly. I reckon that's why they are so disgruntled with the world. :D

Don't forget you have to have a pre-booked appointment with the MOT testing station.
As for police booking someone for having an MOT where they accidentally wrote 1006 and fixed it to 2006, oh come on, we have better things to do.
Like booking people for illegal cans!
Yes, you are right there, forgot to say that. I was pre booked, even though the MOT place is just around the corner. You never know what may happen.
Ignore the jobsworth for refusing you a tax disc but he does have a point that your MOT is theoretically invalid as it has been altered. The MOT station should have re-issued you a valid MOT cert to avoid this.
You do need to get another certificate as although we police officers blessed with discretion and are not those black and white busy bodies will simply advise you that your MOT isn't a legal document and you need to get a re-print.
Good luck!!

Don't worry, I got the tax disc after a bit of pleading (I gave him my sob story about the DVLA messing me about and he was much nicer after that). I'm going to get the garage to re-issue the cert.
I just had the same problem when i went to tax my car, the berk at the MOT place had written M322 instead of M332 on the MOT certificate.
Was told by the women in the post office that my MOT wasnt valid and i couldnt have road tax, explained it was a typo, but she was adamant.
Asked to see her boss and showed him the previous MOT`s and explained i only had 10 days left on the MOT certificate, and he told her just to give me the tax.
This years certificate is all printed out, much better.

Only legal if you have pre booked an MOT and it must also be the most direct route too and from WITHOUT STOPPING.
I oncce rode a brand new bike 12 miles to a dvla centre with no plates and no tax just so they could check out the clasification . all this through the town there and back passed several police vehicles and not one of them noticed no numberplate.
go figure that one
I rode around without a plate for two months. No-one cared.

What about traffic lights? What if you need petrol? What if ....
Just some quotes on stuff.
HOW FAR CAN I DRIVE TO THE TEST STATION
I am aware that a car that does not have a current MOT Certificate is not allowed to be used on the road except when going for repairs for a test, or to a prearranged test. Is there a milage limit as to how far a car can be driven without an MOT if it is going to a test centre - ie can one drive 40miles in the car if it to be to an MOT appointment with a garage?
No there is no mileage limit. - MOTT
SORN
My vehicle is SORN registered, can I drive it to the test centre
Answer: You can drive without tax to a pre booked test but you must have insurance you do not need an MOT to insure your vehicle
No MOT
My MOT has run out what are the penalties
Answer: No MOT is rarely charged as a separate offence and usually appears as part of a long list of other offences with a more substantive offence carrying the major penalty. It is usually dealt with as no separate penalty Where the defendant has been convicted of more than one offence, a magistrates court is entitled to impose a penalty for one offence and make an order of no “separate penalty” for the remaining offences, if it is thought that an adequate sentence has already been imposed. Which means that fines are rarely imposed for not having an mot, on a roadworthy vehicle

It Was not a dig at you mate  i was quoting from a conversation I had with a rather pleasant young lady of the police kind  i said the same as you ie lights etc. the reply was "no no you silly man" I mean don't go shopping or anything on the route.  trust a woman to think about shopping.
ohh and BTW you CAN drive with no tax or insurance as long as you have an appointment with a DVLA centre and a covering letter from them stating so. RE my previously mentioned journey. :)

I rather think that insurance is an absolute requirement, even if the vehicle doesn't have a registration number issued to it. I've read of people taking imported bikes, cars, etc. to SVA tests. The one thing they must have is insurance.

we had a bike mot'd the new way with the new printed certificate and the tester put the wrong year in for the bike, when the cert was printed out and i noticed this he said theres nothing he can do now because the info was logged with DVLA, he said the error was his problem if anything was ever said.

I did a personal import car from Belgium. The dealer forgot to put on the receipt that the car was new, so I had to present it for inspection at a DVLA licensing office about 35mls away, and drove it (after double checking with them) without plates there and back. As you say, I passed a couple of police cars without being stopped.
You do need insurance to drive on the road, it is issued against the chassis number (VIN), the insurance company were au-fait with it all and did it no problems.
As for post office operatives, I tend to agree with them, sad as it is, that if the details on the docs aren't correct (even from a mistake) then they shouldn't issue. It's not their fault there's a mistake, they just go through the motions. How wrong would the details have to be before you'd say they were right to reject it? My SV has a "*615 ***" reg, my mate's has "*616 ***" (bought them as a job lot, cheaper in quantity! ), should they accept the MOT for one of them as OK for the other, it's only one number different?
On the other hand what you ride/drive where and when is none of their d@mn business, they are not there to tell you it's illegal. Why not just say you're riding another bike (OK they'll have you for lying too! ).

I sincerly apologise  I do remember giving the chasis number to ebike before i rode to the centre  so yes i was insured even though the bike was not registered to me at that time  it was such a balls up of paperwork(by the dvla / sva centre ) to get the damn registration that SMALL detail had slipped my mind  took about 5 days fri to tuesday for the buggers to sort the paperwork out, all because the importer had written Trials/enduro down as the vehicle type. :?
