The title alone will no doubt attract many a view and hopefully will slip below the Mods Radar!
No you smutty lot I refer to buildings! :P Some 20 years ago Prince Charles really came out with a controversial statement calling many new buildings no more than "monstrous carbuncles" even more powerful when you consider that the comment was made in his speech during an awards ceremony for international Architects!
So what's it like where you live? Are their erections that you wish just did not existed in your neighbourhood? :?

Filipe..I totally agree! Come on folks post up your town's embarassing protrusions! :P
near to me (about 25 miles) was the infamous Tricorn Centre at P*rtsmouth.
Hideous monstrosity which thankfully was bulldozed a couple of years back

there is a magistrates court (modern ) in between 2 historic old buildings in Carlisle and indeed Prince charles did comment on that very building when he toured our City years ago
I think he used the very term you refer to.

That big ears with the great taste (look at his woman) was refering to. And he described it as " but what is proposed is like a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend."
This however, imho, is the nicest erection in recent years
http://upload3.postimage.org/97196/im_30sma_01.jpg (http://upload3.postimage.org/97196/photo_hosting.html)
And somewhere i'd really like to visit tbh. They did an open buildings day a couple of years ago but i wasnt free on the day, and friends who did go said the queues at all of the worthwhile buildings was just too long.

Is there a reason for this uglyness?
Was it of some significance to be those colours, like it was a dairy or a butchers or somesuch?

Thats no magic roundabout, that is in fact the only known concrete crop circle. When they dug up the fields that used to be there thats what they found and as a massive coverup they decided to use it and pretend they had designed it all along.
And Elvis also lives under it in a secret nuclear bunker

Any good reason why they built it in the middle of a lake?
The old school here built in the mid 1800's was rather nice.
http://upload3.postimage.org/100410/oldschool.jpg (http://upload3.postimage.org/100410/photo_hosting.html)
But deemed too small by 1967, so it was demolished and they built this eyesore. Including half a dozen temporary portacabins, still used now! This place won design awards when it was built. Unbelieveable.

Correct...it is possible to design good stadia burt this ain't one of them but then they're short of money...
The stuff that gets me is modern hosuing estates which tend to be uniform and bland and boring to a hideous extent and give the 'I could be anywhere' feeling - similarly with many town centre developemnst.
In both cases I think this is down to a combination of costs and the lack of education in good design/art/architecture in schools etc so people are prepared to put up with crap. It is not surprising that most of the good design in Britain is in London (more money) or some of our bigger cities and some of the worse in large towns.

i cant believe i missed this thread for so long....prince charles then went on to 'back' Poundbury. a new english village, built took to look like 18th century but built in 1990's WTF... its the housing equivalent of the triumph thruxton. why !!
poundbury... i'd be interested in everyones thoughts, as an architect i think its sh!te

There are too many to mention, but for me the biggest eyesore is the St James Centre.
Basically it's a huge block of concrete slapped into the centre of Edinburgh at the expense of the existing Georgian and post Georgian architecture.
It's not just the overall ugliness of the building. The fact that it is so out of context and the arrogant manner in which it's been brutally imposed is what really annoys me. :x

Poundbury and Charles loving it is understandable. he like most of the rest of the Brits is resiliant to change. The idea of building spacious and clever buildings is not at the front of his think. His intrest is in keeping things looking the same as they did before.
If i had my way i'd demolish half of london and replace it with tall glass structures that are pleasing to the inhabitans and theose who merely look at them as they pass by. Architecture in this country seems to always be at conflist with something or other. Many other cities in the world maintain an "Old town" area of the city and then progress with the times and build modern things. Not london, oh no.
And dont get me started on Barrat homes :hackedoff:

Not my cup of tea either, but I don't see it as being anything different from the following of architectural fashions over the year. This is just a bland one. :?

I nominate the whole of Croydon town centre. Nigh on every building is a monument to the addiction of architects of the 60s to concrete, or illegal substances that warped their brains into thinking these buildings were architecturally sound.
So I propose that it beats Keithd's suggestion - his is only one building  :P   . Croydon is a series of them - Southern House, AMP House, the Council Offices, the Fairfield Halls, Magistrates Court, and ultimately the Home Office buildings Lunar house and particularly Apollo House.
Allow me to demonstrate:
