:D Hi All!
I've heard of a company who is prepared to offer 15% discount on PIPERCROSS performance Air-filters. This would only apply if they get over 10 orders,For those interested, post a reply! By the way,I'm a car mechanic (unfortunately work for a SEAT DEALERSHIP in Kent) so I'm not linked to or employed by these people (again, unfortunately) just thought this might interest everyone!
Visit: www.motorcycle-filters.com for PIPERCROSS filter info.

The filters are the same as supplyed to Renagade.. but early this year the foam spec was changed to a new and improved style..

MPX080 is the direct replacment

MPX081 is the direct replacment with the airbox lid replacment adapter (big gains)

Not wanting to sound stupid but what else would i have to do after sticking the filter, is it just have the carbs balanced ??? or will it need dynojetting ??? if it's just the balance then i'd be interested.

Not to put a damper on it, but if it's the same filters as are on the Rene kit for the carbed SV, I'd say look elsewhere. They stick up above the top of the airbox, and can cause restriction for that reason.

But what other options have you got ????

K&N - (have got one & the bike runs better with the stock filter!!!)

BMC Race - to be used only with a full exhaust system

BMC Road - yeah might try it

Pipercross - yeah might try it

I would be interested. Can you check the points from Northwind first re fitting??

It does sit on top of the airbox on a curvy yes, but after removing the foam padding under the tank and using tank risers it doesn't restrict, I get a lovely induction noise

Yep - I had the renegade kit, no foam & 15mm risers + twin hilevel carbon cans =

I don't get it. Do you mean it sticks out more than the stock filter ?

If yes, then so does the K&N

Yup, but it sticks out much more. Jorge supplies the kit without spacers, but to get it to work I needed both the spacers and the foam stripped out.I don't mean work well, I mean to not choke the filter, causing the biek to run way rich at the top end.

With the BMC, doing that gets you a performance improvement... with the Pipercross it's neccesary just to prevent it from impairing your performance. They're not very good from the point of view of airflow, and they don't last like a K&N or BMC. How well they filter, I don't know.

I'm being down on the filter here, not the Rene kit- the Rene kit's fine for what it is. But buying the filter as a standalone seems a flat-out bad idea to me.

PatrickUK, the BMCs all work perfectly well without a full system. You say your bike runs better as stock- do you mean it runs rich with the K&N, or just that it doesn't work very well? I don't much rate K&N either but it should lean out your mix, and could do it to the extent the thing won't run well without a rejet.

My advice, people, would be not to **** with it. There's not a hell of a lot of power to get, and it's expensive and time consuming to get it. It's a better idea if you're doing other tuning, but look at it this way. The most generous figures I've ever seen for power gain on an SV from a full system, filter and rejet was just over 10rwbhp, for something like £700 worth of parts plus labour. That's a pretty rotten return. And I seriously doubt those figures, I quote them only to give a really generous example. IMO, the benefit you get from a filter and slipon doesn't come close to justifying the cost and hassle.

And y'know, I'm not averse to modifying bikes ;)

It just doesn't work well with the K&N...

Makes a bit more noise but poor throttle response...

That's why I want to try the Pipercross or BMC Road filter.

BMC Road might suit you then, you're probably a little lean with the K&N causing that hesitation. Or standard, tbh, is pretty good. The Pipercross runs with bigger jets in the Rene kit, 140 Mikunis IIRC.

Yeah I think they're 140's in mine... may be 142's I can't remember

mmmmmm.......

All prices from memory of doing my curvy 4 years ago so may be slightly wrong.

Decent high level Rene carbon - £370ish fitted
Rene airkit (with Pipercross) - Around £50 (ex fitting - not that hard to do yourself)
Tank spacers and remove foam - close to zero

Much better noise, better throttle response and better looks - not priceless but worth more than £420ish to me (and as far as I can tell a lot of others as well).

I never regretted any of my mods - but then I do enjoying the modding so dont see it as hassle.

All IMHO of course :-)

Also, if you just do the airkit and keep a std pipe the "legal" noise alone is worth it....

And, the airkit filters are cleanable so no more cost of replacing paper ones.

Edit - Sorry for continuing the hijack of the original post - I would love a Pipercross for 15% off, but I already have one on both my SV and TLR and plenty of spares for my DRZ. I would recommend them happily.....

I was referring to power. For sound and looks, that's a different thing. Rene kit was £90 when I got mine though.

My airkit was £40 2nd hand 8) + something to viney for fitting, one of the best buys i've made for the bike, don't care about any performance increase of not, just the noise

In related news ;) Just found the filter and jets from my Rene kit, still all in good nick. The intake trumpets are still in the bike till I get it to a dyno but if anyone wants the rest, drop me a PM.
