my bike is making a rattling noise, kninda like a loud clicking. apparently it is not the FI. and my brother seems to think its only doing it since this morning. when it spilled it oil all over the back tyre.
so it was ridden about 1 - 2 miles with not much oil left. i didnt know this at the time btw, just wondering why no grip.
any ideas? it is coming from the engine area. not the exhaust or whatever. my bike is a K3
i cannot compare it to before as i only started riding it today. but andy's sv doesnt do this (but it is the curvy)
thanks

oh dear -not a lot of oil and now its making a 'rattling ' sound ??
not very promising
someone will b along with more mech knowledge
Check that one of your breather hoses has not come off the rattling could be you cam chain tensioners.
where are these breather hoses and how do we check the cam chain tensioners?

The breather hoses run from yur crankcase to your air box on a curvey they are on the left hand sideunder the tank. Camchain tensioners on curveys are prone to fail and make the chain rattle they are situated on the barrols. If the noise has only just started I wouldn't worry to much mine did it for about 6 months before I got it fixed!!!!

also the noise only happens when the throttle is opened up (or at least that is when you can hear it)
and it is very loud
If you do a search on the forum some one has manuals free to down load!!!
unfortunately a manual is no good if you dont know where to start :?
cheers
Andy
Most manuals have a trouble shooting section which sould give you a good idear!!!

Sounds to me like you have destroyed the bottom end, and specifically both big ends.....

What difference will the breather hoses make if they are not connected? I have a rattly sound all the time. I think it's the can chain tensioner, but I'm not sure how to diagnose it further or rectify it.
If the breather hoses are'nt connected the will blow oil out of them! Cam chain noise always sounds worse at low revs and is not so noticable when riding!!!!

i dont know much about engines but this dont sound good, work mate of mine brought a second hand zxr750 and and dropped it on a petrol station forecourt as he tryed to pick it up(engine still running) he rev'd it hard for a few seconds, well that was the end of the engine! rings dead :(

Sorry I was connecting the breather hoses with the noise. Now I see you were asking because of the low oil state. And now that I think of it, I don't really notice it when riding.

OK, how much oil was left in it (how much did you have to add to get it back to the correct level) and how long did you ride it like that?
Did it get very hot?
where is the noise coming from? (try listening to the engine besides it, or perhaps a large screwdriver on different parts of the engine with the other end against the bone behind your ear).
if it's to one side (look at the top of the cylinder cover and you'll see the raised side, that's the cam chain side) and not the other then it could well be the cam chain tensioners, or if it's louder on the other side it could be the small end on one or both cylinders, if however the noise is lower in the engine then you stand a good chance of either or both of the big ends having gone.

the cam chain tensioners do have a tendency to get stuck, you can release them by undoing the 10mm bolt on the top of each, inserting a small flat blade screwdriver ( mind you don't damage the thread inside) and turning it as far as it will go clockwise, once it won't go any further, pull out the screwdriver and the tensioners should spring back taking up the slack in the cam chaim (that will be the noise you currently have).
Cheers Mark.
I did as you suggested, and guess what? No rattle anymore :D
I couldn't get a screwdriver in though beacuse the frame was blocking access, so I made myself a little tool.
Workshop Tip: Put an old, small, flat blade screwdriver in a vice and bend to the require angle. Hacksaw off the handle and voila!

Very easy to use, just like it's very own key.

went for a ride 2 mechanics trying to diagnose the problem. as it was pulling cleanly and the only tell tale sign anything was wrong was this noise they werent sure what it was. it deffinately wasnt the cam chains though.
but it went bang....lots of blue smoke, 2 big holes in the engine. so a new engine for me........yay.

Rictus....I withdraw my previous statement....your sacked! :P
Sorry to hear that the problem was indeed something a lot more serious Paul. :?
But we are talking a K3 bike here? Strewth, what mileage does it have? How on top of the owner maintenance have you been? :?

It dumped it's oil on the back wheel. I think even with good maintenance, that's going to kill most engines unless you notice fairly quickly.

was 7400 miles.
problem was due to an oil filter being fitted incorrectly. this meant the oil was dumped all over the back tyre. i then spent the next 2 miles wondering why i had no traction at the rear, then wondering why the oil light was flashing, then staying on, when it'd just been filled with oil
new filter and oil put on bike, but looks like it was too late and there was some piston scrape or something.
it then went BANG - followed by some nice crunching noises! this was accelerating hard out of a 50 mph corner.....the bike went very sideways, rear locked, clutch in, drift to the side admiring blue smoke in mirrors
one error and it was all over  the cops had pulled us all just before aswell (standard survey, tell us about about bikesafe....not one ticket issued for the copius amounts of small plates, visores, exhausts  ) and as we all pulled away said to each other....you'll like this.....
"those SV engines are virtually bullet proof"
c'est la vie
thanks for the help anyway, 2 trained mechanics couldnt diagnose till it went bang anyway, so doubt i'd have found the problem.

Carsick..I accept what you said but there are varying degrees of oil being "spilled" on to the back wheel. Looking back it seems that it was possibly fired out of the ill fitted oil filter? Christ what an expense is now going to be created due to the poor fitting of an item that costs just a few quid? :?
