View Full Version : Too much oil. What should I do ?
Just changed the oil in my 2001 curvy and managed to over-fill it a bit. Not by a huge amount, if you hold it just off vertical it is on the full line, when vertical it’s at the top of the sight glass.
I’ve taken it for a quick ride. Not smoking, clutch seems fine, can get neutral with no problems, does not seem to behave or sound any different to usual. So question is do I need to drain a bit off or just leave it alone and not worry about it. What would the symptoms be of an over-fill?
Obviously if it was well over-filled I would get all sorts of problems, but I can not imagine Mr. Suzuki engineered in particularly tight tolerances on the SV that would be upset by 100ml or so of extra oil.
If it does spell problems, any idea where I can get a syringe on Easter Sunday ? I have a ride out planned for Easter Monday and do not want to kill my bike.
Cheers,
Mark

you can suck the oil out with a tube, just put the end in de hole where you poured the oil in en then suck at the end (watch out that you don't get any in your mouth, but that whould have come into your mind already  ) when the level of the oil which is in the tupe gets under the level op de oil in your engine, the oil gets out by doint nothing
hail to the laws of science :!: :D

if you overfill it will get thrown up into the air box i think
So if it gets thrown into the airbox will it just go into the engine, get burned and smoke a bit or will it make a right mess of the air filter and cause problems?
You could use a seringe with a tube on it to remove some oil out of the filler!!!! No oil in your mouth then :!:

From experience, too much oil makes the gears and clutch very sticky. It is also better to run it below the max than above for reasons of blowing oil seals and gaskets.
I would drain it out before a long ride

if you use a tube where you can look thru, this won't be a problem...

Just take the sump drain plug out for a second or two. It's messy but it works. If too much drains out, you can always put some more back in again.

Loosen the oil filter to remove the excess then tighten back up

A pipette won't work in anycase.
...but you would need to buy a new sump plug washer :? (what do you mean 'NO' ) so oil filter is best :P

why would you need a new sump plug washer?
take it your theory is its a crush washer! and needs replacing every time?
or something along those lines?
ive never changed the washer and is still going strong.....on that basis i would say it would be ok to undo the sump plug...let oil out .... then do it up again!
by this i am not saying that it will not leak or need another washer....just that its likily you can get away with it!

DO NOT use the sump plug to gat a dab too much oil out, loosen the oil filter a turn or two:
The oil filter that you don't have to remove.
The oil filter that you won't get oil all over you hands by loosening.
Taking the sump plug out is a sure fire way of getting oil all over your hands and also stands the likleyhood of not being able to get back in when you need to stem the flow.
Well in the end I decided to try and siphon some out. But I did not have a tube thin enough to reach through the filler cap to the sump so plan B. Remove the pump spray lid from bathroom cleaner. Clean out residual bathroom cleaner. Prime with old engine oil to make sure no water or bathroom cleaner still in it. Stick tube into sump and pump away. Took out enough to get it to just below F mark. Filled about bottom inch of the jam jar was pumping into. Then cleaned and replaced bathroom pump before wife noticed it was missing.
If anyone else is thinking of draining some out, the only pipe I could find that would actually fit within the casing was probably no more than 2-3mm in diameter. Having just had my driveway replaced, the thought of risking covering it in oil by either the filter or sump plug removal methods was not worth the risk.
Lesson learned :-
Fill a bit, check, fill a bit more, check, repeat.

Hi,
Hopefully I've just corrected a 'Novice' mistake. When I do my weekly pamper of the bike on sunday I checked the oil levels 'cold' and thought 'I best top that up!', anywho I noticed a burning smell on the way into work today and realised when I got to work that the back end was covered in oil! I've got limited tools to work on the bike here (at work) but saw this thread and used the 'windowclene bottle' plan. Seemed to work a treat ! Took ages to pump enough out, I really overfilled it by the looks of it. I can now see the top of the oil in the window so gonna 'hit and hope'. I do need to give her a quick clean up before riding out on her today bein the back wheel is still covered in it and clean her off tonight (lovingly!). Just wanted to know if theres anything to be watching out for because of this, should I expect any abnormal engine noise or anything? There wasnt anything mechanically wrong with her on the way in (not that I could tell anyway) so hopefully no harm done?? :?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I get back out on her tonight.
Cheers
Phil

Turn it upside down and shake it.
Well, it makes exactly as much sense as using the sump bolt :)
