Hi, just wondering if any ones else was doing there dissertations and was feeling quite as board as i am right now?
What are u doing your on?
Mine is a keyword based dissertation management system that automatically finds keywords from abstracts and then links them to relevant dissertations so search can be perfomed against that keyword.
Anyone doing a more interesting project?

That sounds like it could have been done in about a tenth of the time of the one I'm doing.
I'm working on a piece of software that models particle motion (with atom like properties) for education purposes. It's aimed at GCSE type stuff.

My daughter hasn't even started her's as she still has two essays to submit by June and a further 9 months for the dissertataion in unfair contract conditions.
Even worse I can't even help her. She was going to originally do it on the application of arbitration within commercial contracts. But after she spent a couple of hours with our staff barrister she came away thinking the scope was too wide.
Now if only she had listened to her old man and stuck to IT, this geriatric code cutter could have helped her. Then again looking at the industy I am glad she had a mind of her own.

Doing one on an MSc in Logistics. A thoroughly interesting topic of structural and organisational behaviour of companies when faced with uncertain markets. Majoring on the infrastructure setup of the German postal system.
I sleep well at night .....

Probaly true, mine a small project but it only worth 1/4 of the final year marks. Unfortunaley they don't even bother to mark the implementaion so all the marks are gained by writing a good report of around 12000 words.
Yours does sound like a lot of work, going to finish on time. How many hours has it takern so far?

Nope. But im waiting on my study material to turn up as ive just started to do a Gradute Diploma in Purchasing and Supply with the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.
Havent studied in about 6 years, this is going to be a shock.
Doing it self study as i work full time in Procurement and E-commerce. Anyone got any good tips on how to succeed or make it easier in the self study environment?

Mine was an absolute bomb  Very nearly cost me my degree. "An exploration of the use of counter-culture imagery and music in mainstream marketing". Which sounds great, until you find that there's absolutely nothing in writing on the subject. So that either proves you're an insightful, forward thinking researcher, or you're a halfwit. In my case, the wheel stopped on halfwit, and I got 20%... But on the bright side, I only spent about 20% of the time you're supposed to put into it, so it worked out not too bad ;)
Ah been there done that, mine was on comprehensive review of website interfaces looking at human computer interaction and usability studies, glad its over, was a big old project

Sounds like a friend of mine - he wrote his disserwozit on Friendly Fire in WW1 - apparently there wasn't anyone qualified enough to actually mark it as he was the first to comprehensively investigate the subject (or something). I think he got a 'Honourary' First.
As for home study - I'm in a similar situation, studying to become a Qualified Bookkeeper as a back-up whilst I'm laid up with dodgy knee syndrome.
Set the spare room out as an 'office' was a good start. Few distractions.
Then set a timetable - but not a strict one. Kinda like aim for a total of seven hours study in a week, but not specify when. That way you don't get frustrated or dissapointed if other stuff gets in the way (and vice versa), but still have an achievable goal to work towards.
Just started an OU Mech Eng Degree (bit of shock as i havn`t studied for 12 years).

Errr why. Don't you know engineers are the guys who turn up to fix your busted washing machine or look under your bonnet. so why do you need a degree to do that.
Sorry, as a mech eng I get ****ed at the misuse of the title "Engineer"
So your going to get to grips with wonderful theories like good old Coriolis, Castigliano , euler etc. Much more fun for me was Thermodynamics, volumetric analysis of engines etc.
Yum Yum, Don't ask for help I forgot it all 25 years ago when I decided to move into coding

My implementation does get marked but it's only worth 25% of the marks.
Code was done several weeks ago. I'm now doing the design
I haven't started the proper write up yet, I've got 2 weeks till I can get it reviewed then a few days to make amendments. I also have 2 other assignments to work on which are due next week.

I`m a an Electrical Engineer by trade, so understand where you are coming from.
Just wanted to do something to keep by brain ticking over (and i convinced work to pay for it - lol)

lol, Yeah mine done in the same order as yours code, design, then work out the project timing and gant plan and all that cr*p
I had to keep it simple because i didn't have much coding experince but mainly just rellying on my other units to get my grade
mine is a little more (but not much :) ) complicated than it first looked but not much has a user interface that provideds search, admin funcitions etc,
do u reckon the dissertaion represents a disproportionate ammount of work when compared with the other units or is portsmouth just a slackers uni.
which uni you at?

I've done one on graphical synthethis (Procedural Texturing) cool as; maths, but generating winamp visualisation type images.
Next year I'll probably do on an audit of compliance with the data protection act for a company, along with guidelines and costings as to how they can most easily remedy the shortcomings and, and this is a bit naughty, a risk analysis of how likely each shortcoming is likely to be "found out" and the possible consequences if they are.
I'm supposed to be doing a Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control.
So I stay after work to get some stuff done and I'm distracted by SV650.org :P

It does if you want a decent grade. I've no idea what Portsmouth is like as a uni, but there are alot of slackers here.
I'm lucky, I'm a pretty good coder and can bull**** fairly well in my reports.
I'm at Aberystwyth, btw.

I'm doing my MEd just now, and writing a dissertation entitled "Cooperative Learning and the advantages, if any, of taking a whole school approach to it's implementation in the Primary Sector". Ive written about 8000 words - so only 12000 to go!!! And its due in this June, so I really should stop task avoiding and get on with writing the bloody thing!!!

I notice your in Portugal, does it apply out there? Do you have an MIOA qualification.

We have our own noise regulations around here, usually strict like hell but which noone seems to care about.

Luckily my other unit marks will carry the dissertation, i been getting high marks in everything else so providing i don't stuff the two remaining units i can get a relativley poor mark on the dissertation (50-60%) and will still get a 1st.
Good luck to you all by the way
One thing i have noticed and it applies to me is that you dont really need to be able to code well to get high marks in the computing degree, if you can write decent reports and understand the theory of coding that seems to be enough. Far enough i have been able to transfer most of this thoery into practice but does seem a little unfair many of my friends who are far better coders than me but get lower marks.

Thank God I did my degree years ago. Didn't pay a penny either
And it got me where I am today.

Little late on this thread but here goes anyway...
Customizable PL/SQL Code Reformatter is my title, and its the biggest load of boswellox that I've ever wrote. 17,500 words, we can choose from 3 marking schemes of reseach, typical and implementation.
I wanted to do implementation but found that writing a compiler is alot harder than I first thought. So I'm doing a typical now. Handed it in last Thursday and then got very drunk. Came to 325 pages as I printed the source code aswell (so they can't run my program and find it doesn't really work!).
Counts for a 3rd of my final mark I'm told so I am now expecting a Vorderman. But for you guys still working on it my advice is print and bind the night before (as I did) as the que for the printers and binders is huge on the day (mine took nearly 3 hours to do).
And a final peice of advice for anyone doing a diss next year (apart from don't) is start writing the report straight away as the look on some kids faces was priceless as they realised that they have 2 days to write 15,000 words!

Beaniebike,
sounds interesting, I might be able to help you if your interested in 'collaborative learning cycles'. I'm in SEN and currently writing a proposal on memetics within education........but I do outreach in the primary sector. PM me if you would like to share resources/ideas?

I am writing my thesis for a PhD in Cancer research. Title:
"A conditionally replicating adenovirus with controlled late gene expression of a suicide gene"
I have written 45,353 words so far, nearly done.

sorry I'll get my coat
i did mine on "computer system control for people with severe movement disabilties" - it was basically motion detection which worked by translating small finger movements using a camera which allowed people suffering from limited motion to control a PC, very buggy but worked on the demonstration and got me a 1st :D
