So, like a fari few of the aged bodies that seem to lurk here, I was listening to Back in Black today and got to thinking how many other bands have continued to be successful after they've changed their front man/woman? What acts have still garnished sales and remained "true" to the spirit of their earlier musical endeavours after a singer switch?
AC/DC for openers, but who else?
Maybe the Sugababes [didn't say the music had to be good!]
INXS, although not sure if they're making new music.
I supposed one could jokingly throw Rainbow onto the heap.
Anyone who says Van Halen can get their coat now!

Drowning Pool is another, they're on their third lead singer in 6 years.
there's an argument to say the "DC" were more sucessful after Bon Scott had departed.
anyhoo, can't think of any right now.
the commodores had a bash after Lionel left but were fairly pants to be honest. as were the jacksons. but then again you could say they were the jackson 5 then....
From Paul Di'Anno to Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden, though they were on shakey ground with Blaze Bailey. Re-assessed the situation and brought back Brucey just in time.

Queen Paul Rodgers is a good vocalist to take Freddie Mercurys place.
Another band returning to the scene Alice In Chains according to Jerry Cantrells website the rest of the band feel it's time to return with a new vocalist four years after Layne Staley's death. They are going to see how thing go on a tour this summer.

Sorry, no one can take Freddie's place...
He was the driving force, the main songwriting came from him. Queen wouldn't be the same without the other three (Freddie's solo efforts prove it), but he simply can't be replaced, a bit like Marillion never were the same again without Fish (though Fish's solo career has quite some interesting moments).

Went to see Queen in Hyde Park with Paul Rodgers good in it's own right but it just wasn't Queen without Freddie.

Black Sabbath-Ozzie to Ronnie James Dio
Rainbow-Ronnie James Dio to Graham Bonnet-and others!
I wouldnt have said that Rainbow remained true to their earlier spirit. The band has two distinct phases - the heavier phase with RJD and the more commercially orientated phase with JLT. End of the day Blackmore was the force behind it but any best of Rainbow album clearly shows anyone listening to it the band distinctly changed the style of music.
Not to say its not good - I like songs by both singers, but Ranbow Rising would be the definitive album for me [my signature gives it away a bit there  :P    ]
Whereas AC/DC didnt really change the style of music, just the singer.
Awaiting Nightwish's next album - having sacked their singer its going to be different. Tbh, I like it when bands evolve somewhat and change things.
And any award for most changes of line up has to go to Deep Purple. Though again, the favourite line up incorporates Gillan as vocalist.
RJD is better on his own rather than replacing vocalists in other bands. :D

lynyrd skynyrd - losing lead singer ronnie van zantz, fantastic guitarist steve gaines and his sister cassie (backing singer) as well as road manager dean kilpatrick, went on to iconic status with ronnies younger brother johhnie as lead singer
also
joy division - ian curtis commits suicide on the verge of a world tour, they change their name to new order and transform from indie legends to pop icons

Iron Maiden
The had some guy at the beginning (dont know his name) then they got in Bruce Dickinson. Listening to the old stuff and then the stuff with bruce, i know bruce is better. Just listen to live recordings of "fear of the dark" and "hallow'd be thy name". Send shivers down your spine! Awsome! Who thought operatic sining and rock would go together huh?
Matt
EDIT : Haggis, you already mentioned it!
sorry mate, dont mean to steal your thunder. Rock In Rio is the best music DVD i own! Matt
deep purple had some mega changes over the years (john lord on keyboards-the mans a god). correct me if i'm wrong but didn't david coverdale from the great whitesnake (few changes there) do an album as part of them called stormbringer :?:

Sepultura... Or to give them their full name, "Sepulchoora from Brazeel"
Runrig
I think their appeal's become more selective since Donnie left to be honest... These days they play to their existing fans, you're never likely to see them on top of the pops again
I see Donnie quite often strutting the streets here. You wanna see him - black trenchcoat and shades on in murky December, every inch the rock star he secretly still wants to be. ****!

Northwind - Sadly old boy, you are hugely correct about Runrig's appeal. having seen them live with the new boy on lead vocals, he isn't a patch on Donnie - in fact, I can't even remember his name.....
I'm surprised as well at how many people are metal fans..... oh how I mispent my youff

Classic album, where he's sharing lead vocals with Glenn Hughes (bass player)

Beat ya! Yes you are correct over Coverdale.
When I get back to Kent Ill dig out the Purple Rainbows CD. In the sleeve notes theres a "family" tree of all bands linked to people who have been members of DP. :D

For me, the best line-up is:-
Ian Gillan - vocals
Ian Paice - Drums
Roger Glover - Bass
Ritchie Blackmore
Jon Lord - Keyboards
