Managers all get promoted to the level of their ineptitude, then no further.
Do a Fight Club on him, go into his office and beat the crap out of yourself. Then blame him for doing it. We need pictures.

My new manager's extremely cool, I have to say. My old manager, on the other hand, was so bad it's funny with hindsight. Some of what she used to do, I can only put down to mental illness.

My manager is superb. You respect him and consequently don't take the michael, so he leaves you alone unless you ask for his help. I do a lot more work this way and the workplace is so much better because of him. I've worked under some real ****s before, so I appreciate what a benefit it is.
What makes it worse for me is that I have never worked for a complete tosser before. All my managers up to now have been really good. I know I am probably going to regret looking for an out because of one person, but I really cannot put up with him.

My team leader is also a ****. But I leave next week so he can go **** himself. I was working on a helpdesk and he had the cheek to come over and accuse me of being unproffesional just in case I had it in mind to behave unproffesionally in my last weeks here. Tos*pot
I spoke to both HR and my line manager (who reports in to the tos*pot, in case it came from him) but have decided not to file a grievance for 'Dignity at work' because the tos*pot made this accusation publicly.

What most people managers can't get into their heads is that everyone who works under them needs to be managed differently. You can't have a "standard" management style because one size doesn't fit all.
"A managers role is to create an environment where their staff can work effeciently and be happy doing so"
One guy may need putting under pressure, another may need reassurance another just needs telling "you're doing great - carry on", Others need kicking up the backside because they're inherently lazy.
It's not difficult, but it seems that most managers just don't understand what the jobs about...... I'm just glad I had a manager who taught me this secret......

I've had 3 moronic managers in the last 18 months. What have they all got in common.
Yep two left of their own accord. The other one got the boot. ( although the company line is that he resigned. but he didnt. )
What is it that he does that annoys you ? or is it lots of small things that add up to one big annoyance ? Have you tried talking to him and explaining how you feel. Sometimes this has worked for me in the past.
I know how you feel. If thats the only aspect of your job that you dont like then dont leave. Just wait for your current manager to get bored and move on.
My manager's OK
It's just all the other tw*ts are want to control my working life that need a napalm party - see my 'Need Bike to Print' thread for just one instance.
Complain to HR and all I get is a pile of promises - but no action.
I think I need another bike ride.

Stop being so down on your manager, until you try it you will never know how demanding and difficult a job management can be.
Firstly many managers are not professionally trained as managers. They get the job because they are good at what they do and end up promoted away from the good job they are doing into being responsible for people, production, etc.
Everyone thinks they can do the job better. I moved away from management because I was fed up of back stabbing from direct reports who thought that if I was out of the way they would get promotion. No they brought somebody in to replace me who was not technical, demanded performance and would not accept that his planning was unrealistic and unachievable.
Strange when I visit my old offices I am told how much they wish I was back there.
Start supporting your manager, if you can work together it makes for a happier working environment, tell them why you are not happy and expect them to be brutally honest with you. Every one has their strengths, unfortunately they also have weaknesses. Now the trick is to use the individuals strengths to build on their weak areas. Nobody like criticism, but constructive it is of use.
So stop bitching and do something to improve the situation

He is an unsupportive, sloping shouldered, lazy good for nothing, who takes credit for the work I do in order to feather his own nest. He will not listen to reasoned argument and is totally narrow minded. He has been here for two months and got the role because of who he knows, not through coming out the best candidate in the interview selection process.
AS for talking to him, his head is stuck so far up his own backside, he won't be able to hear me.
It makes me really angry the he can wind me up so much. He really is not worth the energy I have expent on him today.
****!
Tim,
Thanks for your input and I DO hear what you are saying brother.
I feel he has been promoted above his capability and there is nothing I can do to change that fact.
I don't think I can do a better job. I know that sometimes it is thankless. I had the oportunity to take that role but I declined because I didn't feel it was for me at this point in my life. Personal, so I won't go into the ins and outs.
Unfortunately, I can't offer support to someone I have no respect for. I will do my job in a courtious and professional manner because that is the kind of guy I am.

I tried that with one head of department. At the time I was managing a team of 10 people the majority of which were young and inexperienced and needed alot of coaching, training and support.
He was new and started chucking his weight around and upset all of them by quite frankly being a total ****. I sat down with him and tried politely and constructively to point out that his management style wasnt going down well and pretty soon he was going to alienate all of his staff. I discussed this with him like an adult and provided him with ways in which I thought together we could continue to motivate the youngsters and provide them with career developement and structure. My long term aim was to improve their skill set so that when people rang our helpdesk they got their problem resolved more quickly and 9/10 times over the telephone with somebody having to visit their desk to fix their PC.
He told me he didnt want my help or input. He just plain and simple didnt want my help and he had his own agenda.
Sometimes managers really are pratts.
He handed in his notice and then got put on "gardening leave" as he got caught trying to drop his manager in the sh*t. He really was a grade A class 1 tw*t.

Tim,
Managers have to earn respect, which they won't get by not setting their stall out and making everybody aware of their expectations initially. It's not the workforces fault that someone up above has put an inexperienced manager in place without proper training.
I have been manageing people for quite sometime and yes that came because I was a good salesman and got into management. What I have seen (and very much in fact) is that the best salesman is generally not the best manager. Companies should realise that they need other ways of rewarding people with promotion than just making them managers.
In my last managers role 3 of my team were promoted to team leader or manager status. One of them I knew was a mistake because he just wasn't right for it. Fantastic at his job, but that was about it but my Manager wanted to promote him.
Some managers were born leaders, others think they should be, there's a difference....

So? If I go into a non-management role that doesn't suit me, I move on. A lack of training or ability doesn't excuse incompetence IMO. Most bad managers don't want for training, they lack simple common sense and people skills. My own experience is that no amount of training will make a good manager out of a bad one- it's a very difficult position, and some people just lack the ability or the resources to do it well.
Take me... I can lead people who I've worked with, because mostly they'll know I'm not going to lead them somewhere stupid. But I can't inspire strangers, it just doesn't work for me.
Anyoen can find themselvef in a job that doesn't suit, for whatever reason. Maybe they can't do it, maybe they don't enjoy it. It's their responsibility to sort themselves out one way or the other- get on with it or get out. I've been there and done that myself...
(I reckon the same monomania and lack of empathy that made her an atrocious manager was what made her a great salesperson- she never felt bad asking the awkward questions, or nipping someone's head constantly till they said yes, because she just couldn't put herself in their position. But that also meant that she couldn't understand why people on eeh team didn't want to work 5 hour overtime a week- she was happy to do it, why wasnt everyone else?)

Ooh, can I have a BattleMech too? It doesn't absolutely have to be a particularily large one.
My manager told me yesterday that I was buying him lunch because he bought lunch for my two colleagues last week.
I won't grace you all with my reply - but at least he's in London and I'm in Worcestershire, I only have to put up with him when I go to London
I'm so glad I'm taking redundancy and getting out of this place. :?
