On my way to work this morning this is what I saw on my speedo!
The needle on the speedo was doing some interesting things shooting round the clock, with the rev counter doing the same. Though this was rather less frequent, even making the fuel light flash.
So I imagine somewhere water had got in the electrics, but where? Could anyone give me some pointers at where I should look/check/clean?

I wouldn't worry, the Highways agency have been installing wormholes on the most congested roads around the UK, you probably just ran into an unmarked one :P

I had something similiar, it turned out there was a bad conncetion at the battery- just needed tightening up. So you might be lucky...

I had that problem when I jet washed the bike once. Left it in the summer sun all day and it sorted itself out.

Turns out it was a dirty/loose connection on the battery terminal.
