I do. In fact, I was going to this week, but I've had a stinking cold for the last two days. Will see if I'm feeling better before they leave.
I do, something that costs nothing, but could save a life. Its got to be done.
I do, I really enjoy doing so.
Everyone is really friendly and they all but force feed you biscuits and orange squash.
And all you have to do is lay down for a bit with a needle in your arm.
:D :D :D

Every time i try to they tell me "sorry we can't accept your blood at the moment because........" and they give me another different excuse.
It's been Holiday in a Malari (SP) risk place, Tattoo recently done, anthrax in my system, I might give up soon.

If I ever need some more, I'd gladly take some evil contaminated homo blood... Ridiculous rule that, there's no increased risk at all, it's just pandering to public perceptions. When there's threats of shortages, why cut off an option?
Incidentally, diabetics are allowed. But I'm not now, because I've had a major bone break, a tattoo, had a transfusion, and taken tramadol painkillers- I think it's 2009 before I'm allowed to again since some of the criteria are cumulative. Always used to though.

https://secure.blood.co.uk/c11_cant.asp
about halfway down the page.
You should never give blood if:
1 You carry the hepatitis B virus, the hepatitis C virus or the HIV virus.
2 You're a man who's had sex with another man, even "safe sex" using a condom.
3 You've ever worked as a prostitute.
4 You've ever injected yourself with drugs - even once.
You should not give blood for 12 months after sex with:
1 A man who has had sex with another man (if you're a female).
2 A prostitute.
3 Anyone who has ever injected themselves with drugs.
4 Anyone with haemophilia or a related blood clotting disorder who has received clotting factor concentrates.
5 Anyone of any race who has been sexually active in parts of the world where AIDS/HIV is very common. This includes countries in Africa.
Please do not give blood if you even think that you need a test for HIV or hepatitis, or if you had sex in the past year with someone you think may be HIV or hepatitis positive.
:why: clearly this is so unfair and I think just plain silly!! personal opinion  i guess I'll just get off me soap box though because otherwise I'll be on here all week lols
xx
I used to until the blood pressure doc (at the blood bank) told me I was causing myself too much trouble. I'm terrified of needles and could eat for abput a day before giving, got so worked up that my blood pressure went thorugh the roof - hence they checked it before each time I gave. Still did it for a number of years though before they told me not too.

I'm not allowed. I did try honest my wife was there giving blood too. I filled in the form, sat and waited, went through to be interviewed and then when she *****ed my finger she asked why I hadn't given blood before thing took a turn for the worse.
Next thing I know I was fighting in WW2 when a bunch of gay Germans captured me and to me to a POW camp. After trying to escape the gards held me down and started unzipping their pants. I awoke shouting "UHHH GET THE FU*K OFF ME" much to the amusement of the 50 people waiting to give blood not to my wife's amusement I must add. They told me not to go back. I didn't argue.
Moral of the story. Never play Battlefield 1942 for 3 hours straight before going to give blood
Funny :) I'll take the win on the leathers, I'll let you have the victory here :)

I do gets me a couple of hours off work
i have in the past but for the last couple of years keep getting tattoos so not allowed. i feel guilty for this sometimes..... i could save a life but chose to have ink done, so instead carry a 'full' donor card.

And there's another topic- who's on the register? I signed up when i got my license, I hate to admit the only reason I hadn't before was utter laziness.
Anyone else think it should be opt-out rather than opt-in? Maybe with a veto from immediate family in the case you've not registered? Seems to me that a lot of people would allow it if they could just be bothered, but never really gave it much thought- but that anyone who didn't want their organs reused would care enough to register...
Mind you, I can't imagine there'd be a queue to get any of my bits :)

Been donating since I was 18, I even managed to get my silver certificate (25 donations) just over a year ago 8)
The way I see it, I'll do what I can to help others out by donating... but I only hope I'm not in a position to have to make a withdrawal any time soon
ok I did it once, but nearly passed out and it ended up takin about 3 hours, since then it appears to have turned into some kind of mild phobia. I do carry a donor card!! :D

being O+ (universal donor) I've given in the past, 78 units, but on insulin now so that's a no no, on the rgeister and my N.O.K. are aware of my wishes, also been called up for bone marrow but for some reason it didn't happen. am second inline (youngest brother is the closest match) to donate a kidney to my brother when they sort out a new anti rejection treatment that will work on him.
I don't see it as donating blood, more building up a stock for later use
Cheers Mark.

My thoughts exactly, though unfortunatly I've got into a bit of a debt problem with the Blood Bank!
Although I couldn't at the moment due to recents ops etc, I haven't been allowed to for the past seven years or so anyway. :(
Apparently my body has exactly the right amount of blood in it and really resents any of it leaving the premises by any means. Take any more than a couple of syringe fulls and the ol' body kinda goes on strike and begin a shutdown sequence! I even had problems with just blood tests recently where they take just trhee tubes of the precious stuff!
I do try to consolidate my debts every couple of years, but so far the same result has ended up with a polite 'no thanks' from the nurses. Though they generally still give me a biscuit and 10/10 for trying, espescially when I say "Look, it's OK, I could do with a nap, just carry on." :?
Yes slacked off abit lately will get back on it soon.

Hum, that's interesting. Here they don't seem to be concerned that I'm insulin dependant. They did a BM test before to make sure I wasn't ketose, mind.

I use to give blood, got one of those blue cards, but I stopped after my operation a couple of years back, kept asking them whether I could keep giving blood, but they never gave me an answer.

Glad to see so many of us giving blood. I do whenever I'm "sooth" on the mainland - the blood donor folk won't come to Shetland, they say it's not worth their bother.
I used to but I gave twice then lost my entire body count of blood during my stay in hospital... and had it replaced so I'm not allowed any more
I would love to have been able to give blood but I've never been able to. I'm too small and light, apparently, as I weigh under 7 stone.
I've never understood that reasoning myself. I will have the same amount of blood in relation to my body size as a 6ft 6 guy would have in relation to his, so surely I could afford to lose the same proportionate amount?

Giving blood is something I will also do, but as much as I would like to, I would never go on the bone marrow register. (Girlfriend is a nurse, so knows the things they do not tell you!)

Without the iffy details, I would rather save my one shot at chemo for when I am ill, or if my family needs some spare marrow ;)
If you donate bonemarrow you can never have chemotherapy again. (if I remember rightly).
I will check with the missus tonight. She works on a young persons cancer unit.
Fair play to those who ar eon it though, but that explains the low numbers on the register.

Hmmm, I'm generally about 8 1/2 - 9st (though 8 at the moment thanks to crippo status meaning wasted thigh muscles - hell, even my leathers are almost loose there now. :( ) I wonder if that's why I go into shut down.
They've never exactly told me any more "No thanks, not this time."

thats fabulous, I never knew about it even!
I give when i can normally twice a year as then I get anameic
though i've been told today that my feratin store(iron store) count is 2 :(
normal people are between 50 and 275. women can be as low as 10 though i have been told to see my GP asap and get it checked.
probably why i'm so tired all the time.
Daily pints of guisness sounds better than iron tablets
Also on bone marrow list. Boy next door has got Lukemia and has been seriously ill on many an occasion.

Like many people I always said to myself that I should give blood and also like many people I never actually got around to it.
Then one day after an unscheduled high speed meeting with an uninsured escort full chavs I woke up in hospital with several bags of blood being pumped into me to counter act all the blood that was leeking out of me internally.
Now I have been given blood and LIFE I would love to return the favour but am not allowed as the blood I received might have contained hepitites, HIV or BSC. Thats why I suppose they are so stringent now.
I am greatfull for every ounce of blood I was given (and the cadaver ligaments used to rebuild my knee) so thanks to other people generosity I am alive and can even walk (well it's more of a hobble). I dont care if they are short tall fat thin black white gay strait or into cricket or not. Thay save lives and they saved mine. Thank you all.
So unless you want to feel as guilty as me for being a reciever and not being able to return the favour I suggest you give some blood ASAP.
BLOOD, It's nicer to give than receive.
