Opinions on text talk?

Now, im not old, and I do use it occasionally to keep the text short, which is the idea? On my MOBILE PHONE...

But how is that transferred to the internet?

They don't have a limited number of text spaces.
The have a full keyboard with every letter in front of you.
How much time can missing one letter really save? Dat? That? Sed? Said? Innit? Isn't it? da? Errr no idea lol... Or the others that don't actually save any letter, just changing the language...

Now im not old (yet), but i still don't get it, and why its needed online? AND, will some of it become part of the dictionary in a few years? Or is it a passing phase that will go when we get some kinda of new phones (i dunno, something you just talk into and it sends a text)..

A few sites i use currently have issues with teens (and adults!!! ) doing it and are trying to clear it, and it winds most board users I know, and it makes the person typing it look really chavvy and un-educated (no probs if your not bothered really  (or actually un-educated ha ha) ).

LOL and LMAO i can understand as that came from the internet as expressions and not just to shorten words.

Mass-debate (easy tigers) available. Discuss.... PS, this isn't actually aimed at anyone on here, as no-one really does it.

I hate text speak, like you i use it occasionaly on my phone if i'm running out of space on a message but it normally only gets as far as changing FOR to 4, and to for 2.

And i can't be getting old already but some times it takes me ages to decipher what it actually says, it drives me crazy. :smt102

my mother, who is 231, uses it when she texts me. i tell her off for it, i tell her she didn't bring me up to speak that way therefore she shouldn't

I guess if you use texts alot then it becomes an easy habit to slip into, it breeds lazyness as far as typing whole words go but as far as I'm concerned it isn't much different to the dreadful grammer displayed by most people on the forums.
Perhaps the problem is only a problem when people think of our language as a fixed thing. It never has been and will undoubtedly change with the times, yes it will be affected by chavs and text language and slang. But the English language unlike our French cousins is ever changing and growing and I think that that is marvellous, because it means that it will never be buried in time or boring. Bring on change and embrace it, thats what I say :cat:

The thing is it's not a new thing, even before text messaging on mobiles versions of it where used on pagers. So remember its nothing new.

do you want to know what gets to me? well I'm going to tell you anyway, people who worry too much about such small fry.
Kiddies aren't taught to talk like that. But in this high tech world, where everyone wants everything done, yesterday! what harm can a little neologism do? Personally I'm not that great at writing in it either and yet as an incredibly slow typer it would be nice to think that I wouldn't be penalised for shortening the odd word here or there to make it easier on a forum posting, afterall this is not part of my degree! And the worst thing is that I genuinely don't always realise I'm doing it.

My uncle was a keen neologist and I'll tell you he was very short sighted and died a premature death.

Its just lazyness. If you recieved a letter from the bank in text speak or a letter from a company would you think about that company.

Start another post :-P I've got a lot of time on my hands currently. ;)

Your missing my point here. Apart from the fact it makes the person typing it look a little dim, it also lowers "that" particular site as it looks full of chavs and whatnot.... (this place, i THINK doesn't allow it, check with Dr Rich to confirm  )

Would your lectures allow you to hand in a project written in text talk? Why would they reject it??

It also harder to read than english.

As said, i have time to banter today. Im already waiting for someone else

personally I'm not all that judgemental - mental maybe, but judgemental I dont think so. I understand why it isnt really the best thing to write like that all the time but I just dont think that dropping the odd shortened word should be too big a deal. I wouldnt write a whole message in txt talk, but personally I dont find the shortening of words occasionally a problem.

Fact - there is no psychological evidnce to support a link between murdering and text speak.

the other thing to ask is how far would you be willing to take it, I mean are typo's to be banned, how about grammatical errors, which annoy me far more. Or what about those people who simply can't spell because they all give a bad impression of intelligence rate as well.
Yes language should be easy to understand and I think I put previously I'd never write a whole message in txt it would be a bit like this

wot d'ya mean its stpd cos no1 undastanz wot am tlkin bout.

ha ha, u'd be suprised what you can find online. Posts and posts of chav talk.

Most places i use all flame (errrr sorry, umm take the micky, just a little) out of anyone coming on, especially newbies, with text talk.. Mostly they don't come back, or, they change and type normally and everyones happy, till the next one...

I am actually one for bad spelling and grammer. Not becuase i can't spell, but because my fingers have a tendency to type slower than i think. The most commen one for me is the.... or as i seem to spell it , teh..... Damn fingers..

Usually find one or two mis-placed letters, or more

I hate it. My sisters kids regularly try to communicate with me via MSN. Having tried to have a conversation with them and couldn't I gave up. I don't even bother to reply to them any more. Sad, but I just can't be doing with it.

If that wasn't bad enough, they have a special icon for different words. Unfortunately it seems that every other word seems to have an icon instead of the word. Makes trying to read a bloody nightmare.

WTF?????

What is the point of doing the exam then?

Anyways, my 2p is that if you are texting on a mobile then it is justified as the amount of characters used has a direct correlation to the amount of cash in my bank account. Using it on a forum is daft as its quicker to type the normal word, in fact if your text message isn't too long it's easier to use the corrects words because of the predictive text thing.

Which means that the only reason that it still exists is probably because the kids that use it cannot actually write English properly.

I use predictive texting on my mobile as I'm such a poor speller - therefore if I shorten anything the mobile gets confused, so it's not worth it. Only one I do use are C U.

What does get me is my daughter sends so many one word texts to her friends, yes, no, why. Why on earth spend 12p per text for one word?????? It doesn't make accounting sense!!!
