Ok, whats this bird?

We've got one looking very similar to this sat outside our office window!

Just sat there, not moving, soaking up the rays.

Mighty sight thats for sure!

Apparently, its a Harris Hawk.

We've just checked with your CFO who's a country man, owns a farm etc, and knows his birds. Hes said he's pretty sure its one.

Wow, dont get that outside your office every day.

Ike, Used by falconers to hunt rabbits. Normally only found in USA in the wild so has probably escaped his/her pen  . My dad's mate has 2 and they're beautiful birds.

I think its either a red kite or red buzzard one of the two.

Yep, you might want to call this lot, if it stays around. Someone's probably looking for it.

Deffinately not a Red Kite, though they are a native bird (mostly Wales) they have a very distinctive /\ shape to their tail.

It's a Harris Hawk. Fairly certain. Quite often seen in falconry displays, but yeah, native to the USA not here - so someone's gonna be on the lookout him.

I'd give the RSPCA and/or RSPB a ring.

Ive called IBR - no ones reported it missing locally, so they're doing some research.

My colleague is trying to get through to RSPCA but hes in a queue.. RSPB dont wanna know as they dont offer a rescue service. :?

Its definately a Harris Hawk - when i told the chap at IBR it was sat in a tree he said "yep, definately harris hawk - they love sitting in trees, favorite place"

Meanwhile, perhaps our Suvvern chums could comment on this: Harris Hawk sounds like cockney rhyming slang for something......... Nork? Dork? Bjork?

I asked a mate of mine what this big black sea bird thing was, out in the West of Ireland. I didnt know if it was a Cormorant or a Shag.

He solemnly told me it was a Shag. So, I asked him how he knew, and he said, he didnt, he just called them all Shags, since that was more fun.

So, I reckon, its a Shag. In his eagle outfit.

(For the lady Shags, you understand.)

loads of them out in south america. Like, tons of them, and they make this howling screaming noise all day. I found a massive one in my Bivvy one morning, going through my things, with claws the size of my hand.
Scared the crap out of me.
This guy:

This is true.
Most of my gay mates are getting it left right and center.
Ahem.
But, yeah. Gay is where the action is in NYC it seems. Not that there isnt action for hot straight Irish guys.

It looks like my mate's Harris. Though it's not pure, it's part goshawk I think.

I've always wanted a Harris Hawk, fell in love with them as a kid, and always wanted to be a falconer, but never had the chance

if it's outside your office window , it is perhaps being used to scare away other bird's

a common practice and easily obtained if one pays for the service.

our factory (food production) hires a firm on a regular basis to fly their birds of prey in the grounds.

not uncommon really

Well shes still out there. The guy who came to catch him has had no look so went home last night, and was back at the crack of dawn this morning.

The Hawk is beautiful, and all of us in the firm have become quite attached to her, when shes gone we're going to miss the sight of her.

All the pigeons and magpies and seaguls are going mental though, their "pad" so to speak has been taken over by this BoP.. fantastic!

Also a collegue downstairs was quite fond of a squirral that used to eat nuts out of his hands.. but the squirral hasnt been seen since the hawk showed up on the scene... Lunch Anyone?

Just got shouted outside by the guy who came to catch the bird. Went out and bingo.. she had finally been baited. Bird was stood there on his falconers glove, teathered to him.

She looked even more special up close.

Its strange, now she's gone.. im missing her. Loads of pigeons and seagulls around this area and dont give them a second thought, but there was something special about this Hawk.

Felt a bond with her.

Hope she goes to a good home.

Hope she goes to a good home.

So why did they take her away then? Cause it was a built up area?

They have huge eagles knocking about Manhattan. One flew off with one of those stupid mouse hound runty "dogs" that are fashionable out here. Other than that they are getting along fine.

The chap from IBR said that they are not wild nor native to the UK, so without being "kept" they would attack cats and dogs for food.

Also he said that until they caught it, they couldnt see the rings on its legs to see who it belonged too (if it was registered), so they had to catch it.

Ah right. Getcha. They're not native then? Oops.

Nah apparently not.

They are from Mexico, and South America kinda way - although only found on the coast.
