I love tootling along on the back of a horse but am a totally crap rider. I was thinking of doing some pony trekking eves and weekends. Any of you Bristol Mofo's into that and fancy a spot of it?

And anyone know of anywhere good and not to expensive for a bit of trekking near Bristol (pref westside)?

Damn, thats just too far away for me :( I love horseriding and used to ride a lot in the Cotswolds.

Hmm, have to have a look into somewhere close by here. If you find somewhere for weekend jaunts, I might well be up for that.

I've heared about unpredictable handling of these non wheeled forms of transport, almost as if they have a mind all of their own

Guess I'll try anything once. :)

Like Kate, Bristol's a bit far for evenings, but weekends - hell yeah.

I learnt when I was four by sneaking into the field behind our house (and hidden by a huge hedgerow) and enticing the ponies to a treestump with an apple. Then it was simply a case of clamber on the back, hold on to the mane and give 'em a bit of a kick! :P

Then hang on for dear life until I worked out what to do. 8)

Did that for about three years before I got to go to a real stable and have a go with a saddle and reins!

Not been horse riding for years though - not sure how I'd manage now with only one leg to get me up there... but once on, well, it's just like riding a bike innit!

I must stress at this point I can't actually ride a horse. I just hang on and fall off if/when it 'runs'* I do enjoy it tho, on a sunny day. I always say I'm a beginner tho when they ask

*technical equestrian term

It's like good motocross control - it's all in the knees.

I used to to it as a child. Leant to ride bareback with a pair of rope attached to the halter. I must have been riding for about 2 years before I ever used a saddle.

So learnt at an early age to grip with your knees. However it must be about 20 years since I last rode and that was a one off as a lady I was chasing was getting into equestrian hobbies and persuaded me to have a go. At that point I had not ridden for about 10 years. One horse in the pack bolted with a genuine first timer gripping the mane and hanging on for dear life. Instinct kicked in. I belted mine accross the rump dug my heels in and had a chase. Caught up with and grabbed reigns of fleeing horse and returned the hero. (And to a heros reward  ).

But theses days I am a bit too lardy, already have sufficient injuries to risk that sort of excitement. But if I only lived a bit closer to you I would certainly have joined you for a gentle hack with the odd canter accross the fields. Not sure I would be up for too high a fence these days. I used to have a 3/4 Arab that had no problem at clearing 6' but not upto the puissance wall. When you jump those sorts of hieghts your man bits risk all sorts of nasty injuries should you not quite position yourself correctly

You used bits of rope - wimp! There's nothing like psychotic little Welsh Mountain Ponies and nothing but a handfull of mane!

I owned an Arab/New Forest cross - lovely mare. Pretty little thing that showed well and really had that Arabian stamina for point 2 point and x-country. Apart from one major flaw - she hated water! She'd even walk round large puddles given half and option.

Took three hours to get her to cross a small stream once, got there in the end but kinda meant that the inevitable water jumps scuppered a promising eventer.

This is an email I sen to my mates on Monday...

Went for my horse riding lesson - and what a lesson it was! There was me and 3 girls - 1 very cute who was paying a bit of attention  OK, so she smiled and said 'hello' 8) So it's all going good and then we start doing sitting trot with no stirrups (torture if you've never tried it, especially for a guy...) This is to try and teach us to balance, which I obviously lost and started to fall off

I had a brief internal debate about whether to jump off or to try and save it - I went for the save! So I'm hanging off the side of the horse - something like a red Indian in the old Wild West - with my arms around it's neck dragging myself back on and have my legs gripped to the horse and am squeezing like f*%& to stay on - Diarmid (the horse) takes this as a signal to go faster! So I am trying to haul myself back onto a horse that is now cantering, never having cantered before  It was real interesting (remember, no stirrups...)

When I finally got him to stop I just started ****ing myself laughing so much that I nearly fell off the horse again. The teacher said my control and balance were pretty **** but I get 100% for the save

For my next lesson I might wear my padded cycle shorts as well or perhaps a cricket box

Excellent!

On the other hand you could just save the cash and get someone to beat you around the knackers with a lump of wood.
