View Full Version : Bovril vs Marmite
Does anyone know what the difference is between Bovril and Marmite? The smell the same, look the same, taste the same and have nearly the same consistency - so are they one and the same thing? I guess it would be hard to make a drink from Marmite, but that might just be because its more concentrated and hence thicker? Apparently Bovril used to be bovine extract but in the recent past has become yeast extract the same as Marmite....
No particular reason for me asking! I prefer Vegemite anyway! :P

I agree
I have a hot bovril when i go to the match
Marmite tastes of yeast (which its made).... with salt...
Bovril tastes of beef.... though it is simmilar... and it now made from yeast too.
Both can be drinks, and are both yummy...
Though I prefure chicken bovril to beef, tastes good on toast too. :D

What? What relevance has that second sentance to the last and to the question in hand?

I used to live in Burton on Trent, where Marmite was made. The factory was opposite the brewerys, from where they got all the yeast. The whole town used to stink of the stuff back in the 70's.
I lived in Branston Road, which was where the crosse and blackwell factory was in the 30's - hence the name Branston pickle.
Should this be in the useless facts section?

yep. i'd say thats aboot reet
WHAT!!!!!
Neither taste anything like each other.
For the love of all that is spread on toast how can such an error be made.
If they both tasted the same the centries long battle of
"Which is best Bovril or Marite?"
would have to cease.
Pub profits would take a dive as this hot topic of pub conversation, which incidentally can take in excess of two pints worth of time, as the debate would be over in a sip!!!!!
Just imagine. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"So what best Boril or marmite"
"Dunno, they both taste the same"
End
Honestly people think about what your saying.
Tsk!!!! Amaturers

That is true - however - you need to spread chicken bovril on your toast... Hmmmm..... LOVELY!
