Hi Folks,
On the way home last night, and noticed a really odd smell coming from the engine area.
So I immediately stopped, the smell was like a rubbery smell, or the kind of smell from when the water is overheating
Now i check the oil levels on this thing every day, after the last fook up.
So it's not the oil.
Had the same sort of smell this morning too, when I started it ?
The only thing I can think of, is that it was rather wet all the way home yesterday, in fact I got drenched, but hey ho! hardcore!
I've checked for holes in the Rad - can't see anything, but then, you'd need a rubber neck to see anything.
The temperature on the dials is running between 80 and 92, when she's been running for a while. KNowing that I do roughly 180 miles a day.
Any ideas anyone? where can i check the coolant levels?
Cheers - Mass
Just the wet and crap burning off. I get the same.

Also due to the nakedness, rain water tends to collect in the front of the radiator. When you stop and put the bike on its stand, it pours out. First time this happened to me (coupled with burning smell) I thought my radiator was f***ed!
For ref anyway though, coolant level can be checked on the reservoir on the left side of the bike (as you sit on it), just behind the frame. (well for pointy's - not sure if it's the same on curvy's) :D

Actually it is much easier to check it when you are NOT sitting on it

Cheers Luke,
Just been out to check her, yep the coolant level's are good, right on the F.
Oil level is good
Must be the crud n stuff off the road, funny you mentioned the fact that when you stop and put her on the stand, you see a load of, what looks like, boiling water pi$$ing out. Yep had the twitchy bum too when I saw that.
Thanks again

You know what I meant! :D
This smell is totally normal - happens in the wet usually..
I may be being a complete numpty here - but my bike's got the same symptom as the original posters - except that my fan also came on - I'd only been 5 miles commuting & it's raining in Londonium today.
Whereabouts on the left hand side do I find this reservoir fill level? Just had a look-see and I *must* be blind - either tha or it's different on the SK1?
Dirk
I love that smell. I know I'm weird.
On my K1 Naked the water resevoir is on the righthand side. Probably the same on the S.
Cheers guys.
Whilst waiting for a reply I opened the radiator cap & dipped my finger in & it got wet, hooray!
Found the reservoir on the RHS (the "other" left!).

talking of the wet... I sometimes when it absolutly pours.. when travelling on motorway I get a drop in power and one side of the v twin seems to drop. I have to pull into a service station and just give the bike a minute of two just to dry.... I popped it down to bad spark when it gets soaked... Anyone else get this?
It isnt a biggy and it only happens when it is so bad I really shouldnt be on the bike. The bike is ridable when it happens just really lacks power.

Hmm yeah bottle it and I'd buy it.

I think you'll find the smell is worst after riding in the rain after a long spell of dry weather. My theory is that tyre rubber remains on the road in a dry spell, it doesn't get washed away, so when it does rain the road crud is full of rubber, which smells when burning on hot exhaust pipes. It doesnt happen so much in wet weather or in winter cos the rain washes it away regularly. It was bad on my divvy, probably the engine surface is hotter on an air cooled engine, so it is unlikely to be low coolant, if you follow my logic  :!:

Well I am glad I am not the only one with this problem but there is no way I am shoving holes in my fender or having a tacky mud guard on it :P
I also get that smell... It is like pure sweetness.
I also have never checked the rad fluid.. It is still above the lower level but could do with a top up soon. I assume normal radiator fluid for cars will do... Nothing different I am assuming... Also need to get some engine oil as that is about half way between the upper and lower markings. Suggestions on a nive oil to use????
I love that smell. I know I'm weird.
That makes 2 of us!
Find the smell is worse in the winter.
Someone told me (or I probably read it on here) they put molases in the road grit.
This dissolves along with the salt into the water on the road.
Hence the slightly "sweet" smell.
Or I could be talking b*ll*cks, it wouldn't be the first time.......
:D
