View Full Version : Hundreds escape prison
Hundreds of prisoners - including murderers and rapists - have been absconding from an open jail, it has emerged. Nearly 400 inmates have escaped from Leyhill Open Prison in Gloucestershire since 1999, according to the Home Office's own figures.
Twenty-two were murderers, five had convictions for manslaughter, 24 were drug dealers, 57 had been convicted of robbery, seven of rape and 125 had committed burglary.
The figures were released in a written Commons answer to Liberal Democrat MP David Laws.
"Murderers, rapists, burglars and robbers are escaping from this one prison at the rate of almost two per week," he told the Daily Telegraph.
The revelation is the latest blow to the Home Office following a series of embarrassing revelations.
It emerged at the weekend that hundreds of people had been wrongly labelled as criminals because of mistakes by the Home Office's Criminal Records Bureau.
It was also confirmed that an immigration officer was suspended over allegations that he offered to help a teenage asylum seeker with her application in return for sex.
Last week it was revealed that five cleaners working for the Immigration and Nationality Directorate were in fact illegal immigrants.
And late last month it emerged that more than 1,000 foreign prisoners were released from UK jails without being considered for deportation after serving prison sentences.
remind me why murderers and rapsits are in an open prison again...?

yep, pretty much in a nutshell
genearally those who are in for fraud, embezzlement that kind of deal. harmless to the general public, but have to have some kind of "punishment"

they do have a certain amount of time where they are locked up. if you get sent to one its best you do your time, keep your nose clean and get on with it. yes there are certain luxuries you are allowed, but its a case of do the time, **** about and you get transferred to a "proper" prison
I don't understand what people like that were doing in an open prison unless they were due out soon...

I beleive they were due out shortly. They were all coming to the end of their sentances.
Still shocking though.

I never understand why people escape or try to at the end of their sentence. 18 months to go and they're looking at 3 years extra for escaping.

Yeah it is shocking and shouldn't be allowed to happen

It's nothign new- people abscond from open prison frequently. To get put in there, you need to have been assessed as being low risk both for escape and for further offending- so if people are escaping in volume, it suggests there's a problem with the asessment system.
I see Tara and Kitten blaming "the government", the government have no input or involvement whatsoever in who gets sent to an open prison (otherwise Jeffrey Archer wouldn't have been ;) ). There've been open prisons for centuries in the UK, don't think it's a new thing. The Tower of London was an open prison! And fnnily enough, the very first person put there escaped. Bloody French, no sense of honour.
What is missed is that they're massively succesful in terms of rehabilitating offenders. It's like a gateway to the normal world- instead of being in a cell one day and out the next, you spend a bit of time in "limbo". Reoffending from people who do time in open prisons is massively less than people doing time in closed prisons for similiar offenses. They're seen as a soft option, and rightly so, but they work.
I never said they didn't work - they do for some offenders agreed. A little too open for some tho. Like keith said if they are in an open prison tag em

Aye, but you did say it was a mistake from the government. Gov and justiciary are seperate for a reason.
What would tagging achieve? If people abscond from an open prison, they're breaking the law whether or not they're tagged, it wouldn't change a thing. Tags are just another way of doing much the same thing- keeping people out of real jail while keeping them under some sort of control. But if you're going to abscond anyway, cutting the tag strap is hardly goign to stop you.
Yes i did blame the government fair enough simple mistake to make but at the end of the day the government are getting the blame from the press too
ok cutting the tag is an option for someone hell bent on escaping but its also a deterant

Fairy nuff. I'm in a bad mood today, does it show  Of course the press are blaming the government, that's their job.
TBH I don't see how a tag would serve as a deterrant... It's a lower level method of restricting movement is all, I think some people think they're tracking devices..

Report I heard on radio this A.M said many had been sent to open prisons to ease overcrowding elsewhere.
