View Full Version : once again, the svs to sv conversion...

Okay, so I've heard lots about NOT converting an svs to an sv, but if you WERE going to, what would I need???

My problem is that I'm from Canada, and they didn't release the naked bike until 05 so the only used sv's you can find are faired... And I'm all about the stripped down look.

I have a mechanic buddy who'd do all the work for me, but I'm just wondering what I'm getting myself into...

Basically, I've got that I'd need a headlight and new instrument cluster... I like the lower riding position so I wouldn't want to change the handlebars or anything (which I would hope kills the problems of having to switch out cluch lines, etc.).

Basically, it's going to happen - I really want to get rid of the plastic... I just wanted to know what I need to watch for and if there's any good pointers out there....

The hardest part would be what do do with allthe wiring when you take the fairing off!!! I'm not 100% sure but I think the naked clocks will fit ok. I'm sure someone will come along who's done the same and point you in the right direction :D

Why not get one from over the border?
Loads of nekkid SV your american cousins have.

I've tried to pick one up from the states, but for some reason, they don't seem that accomodating to the long distance buy... I've even gotten to where we have made the deal, I've gone to wire a deposit that day, and then they inform me that they've sold it locally.... it's been dumb. I'll keep looking, but I'm thinking I'll have to pic something up local.

Just as well, they have a habit of selling people machines and then invading them to get the stuff back...

But only if they could find me :D

True, you're quite safe then ;)

First off, is it a curvy or pointy?

I've done this with a curvy. Wiring is a pain to hide as it's pretty bulky.Thinking back I should have got a naked loom, but then again I didn't intend to make it look like a standard SV naked anyway.

Control cables will be a tight fit so for all they cost, get a naked set.

Also (on a curvy at least) the clocks are not a straight swap. Not even close.

HTH.

pointy. I'm a big fan of angles.

what did you have to do to get clocks to fit?

I placed the faired set along with a load of other bits in the 'must stick this stuff on ebay' bin and went for aftermarket ones like this...

I think the pointy clocks are more or less the same as each other. Check this though.

Yeah, I think that the bits I take off will end up in the "help finance this project" pile. I'll check on the clocks...

I'm on Vancouver Island, so no, it doesn't get too cold - and it rarely snows...
Good thing too - I get cranky if it's cold out

Never made it to Vancouver Island when I was over on holiday in '99. I was gonna do a day-trip over on the boat until I realised it's the size of Britain!

Great country, would love to do it all again.

That got me when I was in Europe - driving from one country to another was like "headin' down to Vic" on the island (3 hour quick trip).

Haggis, I like how you mounted the clocks, where did you mount the ignition switch?

I nearly didn't get to put the clocks there! When I fitted the flat bars on the yoke I'd already decided to relocate the ignition barrel down on the nearside frame spar. I was going to machine off the hole and lugs on the topyoke, leaving a plain slab. Glad I didn't now, or i'd have clocks dangling by a cable in mid-air!

It's now here....

Is this what you mean? http://www.sv650.org/gallery/pic41/jason1.jpg
Picture is in the gallery section, maybe you could find out who he/she is, all i can remember now is it was built from a dropped svs!!

Yes, that's exactly what I mean - I just want to strip off the plastic and stick a single light on it... I'll try to look into whose pic it is...

Haggis, I like it - might confuse the thieving toerags round my way aswell!

Littledaisy, what do you think of these speed triple-ish style twin headlight set ups?

http://www.justbandits.com/shop/prodtype.asp?PT_ID=81&numRecordPosition=16&strPageHistory=cat&strKeywords=&strSearchCriteria=

Does anyone know if the non-S clocks backing is available seperately, or is a total clock swap required (in which case I'd probably go aftermarket)?

I'm torn about the twin light - I've seen it on some bikes and I think it looks great, and then other times I'm not that into it...

I agree with you about Haggis' placement of the key ignition - I'd loan my bike out to people just to mess with them...

I know what you mean - twin lights can work well (speed triple) or look a bit naff. My perfect bike would look like a speed triple, be as bomb proof as my Hornet 6 and have the SV engine (frugal but still fun!!)

Right now I'm just wishing I had something to ride - got rid of my zx6 (too much plastic) and now am left with a dull ache of longing...

What I really want is what was pictured in that photo you showed... stripped down cafe racer style, but silver on the silver frame, rear fender taken off, and no mirrors if I could get away with it (maybe a bar-end because otherwise I'd die!). low profile and no clutter.

A friend of mine has a beautiful 86 srx6 silver stripped right down (no mirrors, gawdy blinkers etc) that I'm in love with.

buttmunch
24-05-06, 12:21 AM
ahhh in that case, continuing on my Triumph theme you need a Thruxton! Or how about a Honda GB500....

no - stick to the SV plan, you like it to ride, make it so as you like it to look at it just as much!!

littlewhitedaisy

Yeah, I'm kinda an aesthetics person - designer by trade....

And I just sat down from doing a happy dance - I may have found myself a bike... Just got an email from a guy a bit south of me offering me his... Although, now if it's naked, I may have to check out what's required to stick on svs clip-ons and switch the seating position... I've tainted myself!!

that should be relatively easy - I would offer you my clipons, but mine are bent from the crash.... the only problem I could forsee would be that the cables are a bit long (prob not an issue) or that the steering lock might be different (clip-ons fouling tank??) but the more knowledgeable members should be able to clear that up!

haggis
24-05-06, 08:52 AM
I think the lockstops are the same on both models. If you're using the clip-on's ignore my stuff about control cable swapover, no need.

I'd get a small bar-end mirror, they mostly have a convex lens and give a great view, even better than the standard ones. You can see behind you in your own lane too, without adjusting your position, and your elbows are not in the way. :D

Couldnt it fall out?

What, the barrel or the key? Or both?

Try removing your key whilst in the ON position.
The barrel is bolted to the steering damper bracket. The only thing I've lost is the steering lock, but that bothers me not.

The lock is so worn on mine this isn't a problem. Confuses some people when I have the engine running and remove the rear seat, very handy for doing maintenance.

Yeah, I think that's the way I would go - I think a lot of the time mirrors look like some weird bug antenna sticking up...
