and I'm not yet 30. What gives? I just listened to Fix You 5 times in a row. It's only a couple of clicks away from Bad Religion and the Mull Historical Society, it's not like I have the excuse of being too lazy to change CDs. Should I just give up, buy a Dido album and a pipe, and possibly a VFR?

Ha-ha! They're actually pretty talented musicians so no shame in it really.

If I'm anything to go by, then expect to buy your first Katie Melua CD in about a years time.

Don't worry folks, I've only listened to it once. I blame the hard-sell advert with her sad puppydog eyes staring out of the screen. Manipulative biatch spending my dosh for me! :D

my condolences... since you've crossed over to the dark side, you'll probably take an interest in Snow Patrol, Embrace and Travis now...

I used to own the first 2 albums, but I sold them to some losers on Amazon for what I paid for them new. To my ears they're like Status quo with a piano, I hate them almost as much as I hate Oasis.

I'm going to try and get off this one on a technicality. I saw Coldplay at the Edinburgh venue in December 2000, co-headlining with Terris. They were rubbish, but! That means I can claim to have been into them before they were famous.

This is really true for Snow Patrol, saw them as Polar Bear supporting, if memory serves, Maya, a very long time ago. They were good, bought the album, forgot about them for a while then heard Run and dug out the old ones. Everyone loves Run, it's fantastic.

I haven't really heard them - think I saw them on Jools Holland once, but they were instantly forgettable. They struck me as bland music for chardonnay-drinking 30-somethings.

IMO some of those bands are sooooooooooo depressing - !

Gimme rock (zepplin, Hendrix etc) jazz, funk, fusion, dance anything upbeat (jamiroquai - got all their cds 8) )- and when Im feeling serious I play a bit of Chopin, Mozart, and Debussy on the joanna - some Beethoven and Chopin IMO is like acoustic heavy rock - 8) :D

Gimme rock (zepplin, Hendrix etc) jazz, funk

jazz and funk, aren't they the same? When combined referred to Junk :P

Seriously tho Jazz to me is a group of musicians all playing different tunes. Maybe I am not sophisticated enough for Jazz (or old enough).

Quote from The 40 Year Old Virgin

David: You know how I know you're gay?
Cal: How?
David: You like Coldplay

right you asked for it   Im learning to be an anorak so bear with me - Im not an expert but have only been playing and learning jazz for about 1 year now and this is my take on it -

Jazz followed on from from blues and rythm and blues, jazz combined with dance/rock/pop becomes pop/fusion/funk - , The Crusaders, George Benson, Donald Fagan that type of thing (and IMO jamiroquai)

Seriously tho Jazz to me is a group of musicians all playing different tunes. Maybe I am not sophisticated enough for Jazz (or old enough).

youre thinking of the modern/alternative/experimental stuff that came out in the 60's where it all goes discordant - cant stand it meself - yuk!

Jazz is very wide ranged from Trad jazz (new orleans, and Kenny Ball type stuff - not my cup of tea ) , old standards like "fly me to the moon" (again no my cup of tea), stuff which I like - Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, then youve got comercial stuff like Jamie cullum, Diana Krawl, Norah Jones. When jazz musicians get together you have to know a bit of theory of chord progressions and types of scales and then each instrument takes it in turn to improvise a solo (make it up as you go along - harmonising to the melody) There you are then - a precis of my limited knowledge of Jazz and related music 8)

now you can stop snoring :smt015
