Central london
1991 1.6 astra 4 door
car value £200
TPFT
No NCB
= £800!!!!
Bloody hell!
Cheeper to go on your push bike and risk the london roads. Why not just go TP only for a car of that price.
lol
Who's that with? Unfortunately its the same process as for bikes - ring round for loads of quotes.
Directline aren't too bad, also Churchill, Admiral etc.
Yep thats mad, i can have that car on FC cheeper than that and im younger.

Ouch...
I'm not condoning doing it, But you can see why some people dont bother with insurance. Thats absolutly ridiculous, and what would your insurance comapny do if somebody hit your car. Yep they would write it off.
Have you tried some of those companies that opted out. I guess you did a search on confused.com ?
I found elephant reduced my insurance from £1200 £520 when I had my Golf.
Ha ha ha, with TP only the price went up by about £100!!!! The excess is more than the value of the car!
Reminds of when the second best quote for the daytona 650 I wanted was asking for £10,000!
I can't register it somewhere else as I won't be able to get a parking permit.
*******s. I have completely clean licence and everything (but that's because I passed on wednesday!).

Maybe the part where they ask if its been modified, you don't say " Yes its Gold Plated "
Jeezuz, thats a lot for Insurance. Why do you reckon its is?
Is it because you live in London or you've got no NCB.
Have you made any claims recently? :?

and you could try putting the gf on as the main driver.
That halved my quotes.

b*stards. I have completely clean licence and everything (but that's because I passed on wednesday!).
Im having a slight feeling that this migth have somthing to do with it.
My first insurace was £1200 on a £400 mini TPFT!!!
Yup I passed my cage test on Wednesday. This is really ****ing me off though as I really need this car. Can't use the GF as main driver because she doesn't have a licence.
The ridiculous thing is that my boss just bought a ferrari, and under her insurance and anyone can drive it fully comp with her permission! And she's offered me the keys!
Considering all the circumstanses, that aint bad. However, forget all these computer quote systems, pick up the phone, get the yellow pages, and call people. I still find it the cheapest way ever to get insurance. I have always beaten the likes of Confused and screen trade.
My car is insured with the same company that insures my bike. Bike £103, the car £325ish
Many times older cars are more expensive to insure than modern ones with ABS and alarm/immob already installed.

That would cause a problem.

What we need is a system like Australia has, where you have one certificate that's the equivalent of Tax and MOT, but gives you government-backed third party insurance.
You then only need to pay an insurance company if you want fire&theft or fully-comp cover.

eBike now do ecarinsurance (http://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk/)
For the test quote I did with them it worked out about £150 bounds cheaper than what I am currently paying Zurich. Then again I am an old man with full no claims etc.

I wanted a Mark 1 Golf GTI. 28 years old, good postcode, driveway parking, but no car licence... 3 years clean on the bike though. £900 TPF&T for a car worth around £2000. Oh well.

If you have transfered the ownership of the car to her and you are listed as the second driver, and the car is taxed etc it doesn't call a problem. I will mean that you are unlikley to get a NCB which isn't going to help your cause.

When I moved back home from Oxfordshire to N.I. my first car qoute was triple what I was paying in England!!! I did manage to get it down to just double after a lot of shopping around. Just watch all the insurance adverts and you can see how many dont even cover our cars and bikes in N.I. Insurnace here is a joke and rip off.
Living in London with a new license, I think you did well! You should have heard the conversation I had with a guy at Carol Nash when I wanted to insure my car. They wouldn't insure me on a 1.6 litre Alfa Romeo 147 with a tiny 120 bhp and a 0-MPH time of 10.6 seconds as it's too powerful for such a young driver. Now I've had a car license for 5 years and I'm 23, plus I do ride a motorbike which is insured with them and the car is listed as a group 11 car so as you can imagine I wasn't impressed.
In the end I had to put my brother down as the main driver with the policy in his name, he has 5 years no claims where as I have none on cars at least, and that took the quote I got of £3700  down to £1500, but that's still a rip off on a £7K car.
I've always found Its4me to be the cheapest for cars, but you've already tried them so that's not going to help.

one good thing about living in the midlands? cheaper car insurance
everything in London costs treble :(
Try again on the first available weekday of the month.
At the begining of the month they are cheaper so they get their targets,
at the end of the month if they have reached their targets they will quote more because they aint to bothered if they take your money or not,
and if they do then they made a few £100 on top!

Unless you have already bought the car try getting something with a lower insurance group like a fiat cin... (sorry no idea how to spell it) which i think is group 3.
I know this is a bit riddiculous but if you really need a car and can't afford the insurance classics like 2cv's are very cheap to run and insurure, just hope u dont have to do great distances.
Bloody Nora!
Thats alot for a car like that!
Something on the radio yesterday about insurance (all types) they were saying that car drivers who drive 'old bangers' (not saying yours is an old banger) insure their cars, have a knock,DON'T claim on their insurance, but then PAY to get it repaired.
So they suggested increasing the EXCESS to as much as you can, that way you get a cheaper policy, and if you do have a knock you pay yourself.
This is only good if the knock doesn't involve anybody else IMO,because lets say you increse your excess to £2000 and you hit lets say a 2006 BMW M5,they are about £70K new,so you MAY have to pay your £2000 excess, plus losing your NCB.
Whereas if you hit the same vehicle with a £200 excess, you may lose your NCB,but you'll be better off financially.
Depends how you drive etc I spose.
(I pay £200 for F.Comp on a '95 BMW 520i,Im 27 with FNCB) just to rub it in a bit
Thor
I could nearly half your premium :P Use the NCD gained from the bike, Tesco/Direct Line/Churchill/Prudential/etc etc are all the same company. All owned by RBS and they accept motorbike NCD.
If you definately need your NCD on your bike put your Mrs as the main user of the vehicle and ask for second car discount, they will then mirror your bike NCD.
Well after shopping around I got it down to 670 with elephant. BUT I will give them a call about the bike NCB! Thanks Pingu!

Really? Thats great! I'm just begining to get my car licence but by the time I have it I will have 4 years NCD (fingers crossed) on the bike. :) Would help loads if I could transfer those.

Mad isnt it. I've been looking at cars to replace my golf. Found a tidy N reg Audi 2.6 V6 coupe. Got an insurance quote. Beairng in mind I'm 33, I have 6 points and a non fault claim and 11 years + no claims discount. Milleage less than 5K a year.
It was just over £700 thats more than I pay for my GSXR

If you belong to the RAC, they do good policies.
I'm 29 i've had a couple of claims on my bike in the last five years, 2 car accidents 1 was my fault (couldn't blame any one else cos there was no one else involved  ) and i have 3 points and it's not garaged or parked in a driveway. The RAC quoted me £100 less than i was paying, i pay £250 Fully comp.
Admittidly my car is not the most desirable car in the world, in fact i think i would have to pay some one to steal it. It's a 1.4 Skoda Fabia  But it carts around my crap when i can't fit it all on the bike so it does me.
