Can someone explain what this means?
I thtouhg I knew it but after speaking with my insurance company I am baffled.
Basically it goes like this:
I have not claimed since Jan 2004 but have always had a bike and insurance. BUT.......I have never had a policy for longer than one year (or a bike for that matter). I guess tis means I still have zero NCB?
Dan
As long as you have not claimed or that someone else has not claimed against you & that your policy has run its full term (eg. a term can be 12months or shorter for some policies) = 1 yr no claims.
If within your policy term you cancel after x months and not fufilling the full term then you effectivly loose your NCB for that year/term.
If however you have 1 bike for 5 months then change to another but just pay the insurance co for a change to the policy for the rest of the year/term then it can depend on the terms of the insurance company.

Thats the crux of it. You have to complete the full term of the policy to gain the NCB. Cancelling a policy and restarting on a new one means you have to start all over.

On the subject - How long does NCB last? I have built up maximium on car, but since moving to London and getting a bike, I haven't insured a car for about 4 years?

NCB usually expires after 2-3 years without a car. However you may be lucky and be able to convince someone to allow you to use your bike NCB for your car - we did this once, although I'm not sure that you're supposed to be able to!!

I think you "may" be out of luck. I've a feeling its somewhere between 3 and 5 years.

For each policy that you've had a full year's cover you are entitled to a year's NCB. I the past I've just called my previous insurer and asked them to send a letter showing this, which I then send to my new insurer as proof (if they want it)
Your NCB expires after 2 years.

Its the first year you really want, you get the biggest discount to start with and the the increase in the discount goes down progressively until you hit the maximum ncb.

On average 1st year = 30-33%, then on a sliding scale to the maxumum of 65% which should be 5 years. This counter acts the increase in premiumns and insurance tax. Last year i saved £4.40 from the previous year
if you have a bike with say 1 yr NCB and decide to buy another and then start another policy, you can't state you have 1 yr NCB as it's being used for the other bike, you have to start at zero, or add it on to the other insurance.

If you have full ncb and most comapnies will offer an introductory discount on a second vehicle. You can also, afaik transfer the NCB from a bike to a car, so i was told. Thats probably a load of tosh.
I built up a full NCB on a bike, stopped riding and got a car but they wouldn't let me transfer it over. So I built up a full NCB on my car then got a bike. They told me I had lost my full bike NCB and although I had spent five years building a full car NCB in that time it counted for nothing.
If I ever stop riding again I am going to get an old broken down 50cc moped for £10 and keep that insured.

Interesting one about using your NCB from a bike when you get a car.It certainly used to be the case that the one was not transferrable to the other, but I thought there was a company that had moved on this.Did'nt Carole Nash start doing a combined car bike policy which enabled you to use NCD from either?Or did I imagine that?
Several companies now offer insurance for all sorts of vehicles so I see no reason why your NCD should not be transferrable.Ebike also has Ecar and Evan all run by the same firm so why not recognise the NCD?
I lost 5 years no claims discount because i had a company car for 2 years - i hate insurance companys........

My bike was blown over in the storm on Thursday
Basically the fuel tank is knackered.
Is it worth claiming and losing my NCB or taking the hit myself and stay schtum?
I have £250 excess so it is looking like an expensive tank
How knackerd is it? why not just get a baglux to cover the damage or scout on ebay for a second hand tank.

I will be cheaper to get a tank from eBay and that way it won't affect your NCB.

Tank is definately knackered. I would rather ride a Honda than be seen with a baglux cover :P
I havent found many SV Z tanks on Ebay
Just got quote from dealer. £390 plus 9 quid each for badges.
£408 Tank
£250 Excess
Next years premiums raised
