hi there,

the battary on my SV650 K3 appears to be dead. I've taken it out and tried charging it but it still doesn't have the power to turn the engine. all the lights work and the fuel pump works. I went along to my local dealer and they have quoted me £60 for a new battary. Does this sound right?

If i try jump starting the bike using jump leads am i likely to damage the electronics?

All the best.

Martin.

It depends on what they are selling you.

My Yasua YT12A-BS (http://www.thefastone.co.uk) worked out about £42 next day delivery. Obviously a bike shop is charging for fitting as well but £18 to fit a battery is a bit steep

You can get a sprint battery on ebay for £30 or you can get one here... http://www.watchbattery.co.uk/shop/Motorcycle_Batteries.shtml
I have just replaced mine on a K3 also ytx12-bs is the model.

i'd say that was very expensive.

i got a Varta one for 35 from a local shop.
i know you can get them online for slightly less.

Piece of **** to fit... so i'd have a go if i was you.

the real question is, why did it go flat??? has it been left?
i would defo get it charged and see if it repeats.

I've been out of the country for the last 10 months and forgot to disconnect the battary before I left. i think the winter may have killed the battary. i've tried charging it but there is not enough power to turn the engine.

Fitting is dead simply. It only took me 5 minutes to remove the battary so re-fitting should not be a problem.

I'm considering jump starting the bike using jump leads and taking it for a long run but I'm concerned that I may fry some of the electronics.

Thanks and all the best.

Martin.

What happens when you thumb the starter? Does it click at all or do you get nothing? Also I don't think jumping it would damage the electronics.

hmm :?
i dont know if jump starting is recommended, but bump starting is certainly the best way to get it going.

get a couple of mates to push!!!

yeah, if your battery doesnt hold its charged its foooked, therefore £35 should sort you for the summer!!!!

When I push the start the engine tries to turn over but there isn't enough power in the battary. It manages to turn the engine very slowly once and then it dies. there is no clicking to suggest a jammed starter motor. I think the fact the bike hasn't been run in 10 months and the cold wintr weather have killed the battary. The bike has been garaged since last July and although the garage is insulated it isn't heated.

sounds like a new battary might be the best way forward. not having a bike on the road in this good weather is so depressing !!!

Thanks.

Martin.

A battery left for 10 months is most unlikely to be retrievable. Time for a new one.
