View Full Version : First Car?
Kinda wierd incident this morning - almost got rear-ended at a set of traffic lights - I just heard screeching of tyres and in my mirrors saw a red VW sailing towards me! The motor came to a halt literally inches from my rear tyre!
I pull over to calm down/empty my pants - and it turned out that the car was my old pride and joy - my first car when I was 17!! sold on 9 years ago, I thought it would have been scrapped way before it nearly did me this morning!
I'm feeling lucky today! Anyhoo - whats everyone elses first car?? Any interesting ones? What cars did the 'older' patrons have?? And the Americans/Canadians on the board - What monster trucks did you guys get for ya first motors??
Droc.
My first car was a 1300cc VW Beetle. The only vehicle I ever got caught speeding in

IIRC, it had a 4-speed overdrive gearbox, i.e. max speed was reached in 3rd gear and 4th was for "cruising"........

A blue Montego caught fire whilst driving to my Saturday job at Tescos.
4th was for "cruising"........
That explains why, when I changed down from 4th to 3rd it had no guts and the fact it was a metro.
1982 Ford Fiesta 1.1L (BDF 719Y) in Sienna Brown (remarkably similar colour to the rust). Quite reliable, fairly easy to work on (with the exception of the points, as the distributor was hidden under the carb, and the thermostat, the cover of which chemically welded its bolts in, resulting in having to take the whole cylinder head off to get it machined out). Leaked a bit straight into the drivers side seat belt (which absorbed it all), rear wiper worked every once in a while (never when raining), handling best described as understeer-tastic (no front end grip at all), but you could get masses of equipment in it (or 5 people) and it wasn't too scary on the motorway. Passed MOT every year after around £100 worth of welding on the sills.

13/60 Triumph Herald Vitesse (1969 vintage)
By the time I got it, well lets just say it was passed it's prime, but it was a sports car, no honest it was said so in the manual and everything, rag top, bonnet opened the right way, had to be.
Ok, maybe not really , but I thought so at the time, wrote it off trying to do a very bad impression of "the driver" in a multi story car park
Something like this, not as smart, and more a rust colour (although whte originally I believe).

Cheers Mark.
1 litre Nova affectionately called Noddy because it had the same paintwork as Noddy's car.
Again it was free and it was unnickable - left the keys in the door for 3 hours in a car park and it was still there when i went back.
Morris Minor 1000cc  , Pale blue - the four door version. Not split windscreen or 'have yer eye out' indicators! Good little motor though - just kept on going and going....can't remember the registration.
Hillman Imp. 875cc Engine in the rear and rear wheel drive, now that car could go sideways. . . . . . . . . . .
Citroen Dyanne, she was the upmarket version of the 2CV. Bright Green. I bought her for £50 painted her up in Dulux weathershield paint, and sold her a year later for £80.
The bloke that bought her was writing the Haynes Manual for Dyannes on Restoration - so she was lovingly photographed!
I really must try and find that book!

White 1967 Triumph Herald 1200 saloon - KHJ 825E - bought in 1994 for £225 in Romford.
If anyone comes across it, please ask the owner if it's for sale, how much, and then tell me. I'd kill to buy it back.

hillman hunter / rust bucket / 150 quid IIRC
First car - matchbox batmobile. Be worth a fortune if I still had it.
Learnt to drive in my Mum's Morris Minor Traveller - with the wooden back doors. Rear wheel drive on skinny tyres in the wet round corners were great. My first purchase was boring Golf Mk1, while forever lusting after a GTI but couldn't afford the insurance. - Always hate paying insurance that's why I love SV 650.
I know this is a Bike website but never realised Golf was a swear word! - I didn't put in the *

I think it's the sport rather than the car. The ruin of a nice walk and all that :)
